Sinister: Fey Fox Riders/Recommendations, etc.

Hmm,
Just the other day I finished reading a novel entitled "Voyage of the
Fox Rider," by one Dennis L. McKiernan. In the book, the main character
is a faerie (sometimes referred to in McKiernan's works and others as
"the Fey") called a Pysk. Now Pysks, apparently (for I've never actually
seen one) are perhaps one foot in height, and they ride on foxes (hence
the title). It's a very good book, in a sort of Tolkien-esque way. I
would recommend it, and I'm sure Fey Fox Riders would appeal to certain
B&S fans...
Though I have tried to shy away from posting Top 10 lists, I don't see
as much of a problem with the recommendations thing. Especially if
someone who discovered the Field Mice and the Cat's Miaow through this
list, I think it could have some pretty positive outcomes =) My
recommendation is the new Steinbecks CDEP on Summershine Records. I
recommend this because it is the first band I've heard compared to B&S
that actually vaguely fits the comparison. Plus various members of the
Steinbecks have helped the Cat's Miaow out, and been in various
side-projects and played on solo recordings, etc. Anyway, the new EP is
good scrummy pop with organs and a trombone and other gooey
arrangements. I wasn't expecting all that much from this record, as I
didn't think their debut album all that great. It was nice, but it
didn't touch their new EP. If you're interested in what I was listening
to a couple weeks ago, and my favorite albums, etc, check

There's a bit of shoegazer stuff in there, though I wouldn't liken Belle
and Sebastian in any way to that sound.
I feel as if I ought to say something about the Sha La La mailing list
since John brought it up. Don't want to leave anyone in the dark. E-mail
me if you want to know more, I'll leave it at that.
