Sinister: Saint Etienne/shoegazing etc

For all you San Franciscans eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Et, I
can tell you that you won't be disappointed. 'Good Humor' was
deliberately written to be played live and the band they've got,
including the remarkably named Edgar Summertyme on bass is their best
ever. Three backing singers will whip you into a boa-waving frenzy while
Bob and Pete do their stuff on the moogs (occasionally popping off stage
for a Guinness). Despite such thrills, Creation has apparently rewarded
the Et for this sterling work by dropping them. Ho hum.

As for Oasis saving the world from shoegazing, I have to admit that the
very phenomena of shoegazing has been highlighted as one of the key
reasons why people hate students so much. The unifying effect of Oasis
T-shirts, bowl haircuts and Black Grape healed temporarily this division
in society though when the student classes started to get their tents
nicked by scallies at Glastonbury, this fliratation with prole chic
began to wane (notice Johnny Cigarettes' review of The Verve at Haigh
Hall in Wigan - anyone would think that the fop had been dumped in
downtown Beirut, rather than a very pleasant golf course in Lancashire).

To conclude: Belle and Sebastian have no connection whatsoever to
shoegazing, Oasis or the very tired pre-Millennium angst rock ethic.
Now, C86, jangling, shambling, that's another matter...
