i have a story about when i was the one puking up at the back of a bus. when i
was maybe 10 years old i was sent on a 4 hour greyhound bus ride to see my
grandparents. it was during a strike so the bus was overcrowded by maybe a
dozen of us(the air conditioning was broken during the 109 degree day as
well). the bathroom had 3 people taking seats inside and the rest of us were
sitting in the aisles. i was in the back of the bus where i met a nice young
couple who had just eloped, a young man who was on his way to las vegas and
was trying to become a professional boxer, and a recent immigrant from mexico
in his 40's who kept trying to get me to marry him so he could get his green
card. i didn't know what a green card was then, but the newlyweds and the
boxer told me it was a bad idea. we spent the 9 hour ride sharing the peanut
butter sandwiches and apples i had brought and washed them down with a bottle
each of vodka and whiskey. so there i was 10 years old and silly drunk
arriving in to town with my head out the bus window letting loose liquor
soaked peanut butter sandwich bits on other cars. it was a funny thing that as
soon as i turned around to introduce my new friends to my grandparents, they
had disappeared. i always wonder if my boxer friend found his career.
