I'd like to add one more that keeps the sound from being dull and flat    
while still providing something in return.  Sometimes when there is 
silence following the vocals, you will hear background hiss, electric 
humming, etc.  One technique to eliminate this is to set the compressor   
threshold to just below the level of the vocals, and have it cut off 
anything lower than that.

I think that's enough techno-weenie-speak from me for one day.
