Sinister: MATTHEW SHEPARD ISSUE

HI LIST,

this may have no obviuos connection with our beloved "Belle and 
Sebastian",but I just wanted to get a few thoughts across about Matthew 
Shepard,the 22 year old gay student who died last week as a result of a 
horrific gay bashing attack.
This story got very little coverage over here in the U.K,but seems to 
have set of heated debating and an outpouring of grief in America.
I first came across it in last Sundays Observer ,where a photograph of 
Shepard appeared next to one of anti-gay demonstraters declaring "God 
hates Fags".Seeing Shepards extremely sympathetic and kind face,I tried 
to find out more about the whole thing.
Call me silly if you like,but the more I read the closser I felt to that 
guy.Somehow he is a very Belle and Sebastian-esque character,a boy who 
"thought there was love in everything and everyone",a little naive and 
ultimately tragic.The press described him as someone unable  to find his 
place,"shy,gentle and mellow",with strong interests in 
theatre,literature and human rights.
He just seems to have been such a lovely person I wish I'd known him.It 
just makes me sick to think that poeple dared to shout 
"No tears for Queers" outside his funeral service.What kind of world is 
this?  
Sorry to mention serious things,but I'm sure that there is some space 
for this on the list.
