Greetings, grapple fans

Inspired by Tiff Hopkins' detection of Camber Sands in a Squeeze lyric, I
decided to see what other clues to the forthcoming weekends activities I
could find on the wibbly wobbly web. I present the results for your
edification....

1: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Station/3629/season23.html

This interesting page tells us that an episode of Colin Baker-era Dr Who was
shot at Camber Sands. The title of the episode, rather mysteriously was
"Terror of the Vervoids". It also featured the well-known sauce-mistress
Linda Bellingham. Does this indicate that The Verve are going to make a
surprise appearance for the twee nation? No. As committed W!H!O!vians such
as Peter and Keith will know, "the vervoids" was actually the name of
Richard Hell's first band after Tom Verlaine kicked him out of Television.
So expect a big chorus of "Love Comes in Spurts" some time over the three
days.

I quote: "The congregation was the warmest, most responsive Feast audience I
have experienced," said coordinator Robert Harrison. "After months of
difficulty and sadness, this Feast was sorely needed. The atmosphere of
friendship, love, welcome and gratitude was so tangible one could almost
touch it." In Camber Sands, England, a family night of games early in the
Feast helped break the ice. Keeping the Feast in a campground offered many
fellowship opportunities, according to coordinator Russ Couston."

I look forward to the many fellowship opportunities myself, and so, I'm
sure, does Warrender John.

Thanks to Tim for this particular link. This site offers many words of
wisdom that should really be added to the Sheepster advice page. Here are a
few...

>From Camber Sands 1998: Remember its Alcohol-is-m , not Alcohol-was-m
What's an Alcoholic?
A man goes into a bar - big notice on the wall "All you can drink for £5" -
I'll have £10 worth he says.
Thats an Alcoholic
A nice quote from the 1997 Camber Sands Convention:
"AA didn't open the gates of heaven and let me in but it opened the gates of
hell and let me out"
"Most things can be preserved in Alcohol, dignity however is not one of
them"

4: http://www.millenniumrecords.com/nishki.htm

"NISHKI - where hardstep meets ambience: born on the Big Giant label in
1989, the combination of Lorna Lewis' vocals, Michael Antony Marsh's rhythm
sections and their joint keyboard skills gave us a band called Timelike.
Headlining at the Camber Sands weekenders and releasing 4 singles gave them
a reputation for tough beats with sweet uplifting vocals, as heard on
"Emotional High" ( soon be given a 1996 remix ), "Hands Of Love" and the 2
Timelike EP's. Since the unforgettable days of Hardcore, Lorna has worked on
numerous dance music projects ranging from swingbeat to hard house while
Michael Antony Marsh has been heavily involved with Millennium Records as
LOOP 82 and RED CLOUD. Since returning full time to their first love of
breakbeat music they have collaborated with Jungle King Stevie Hyper D to
play/ produce his first single "Junglist Soldier" on D-Stress Records. "

There has always been a junglist element to the Camber Sands weekender. So
much for accusations of all the bands being white indie jangle saddoes. I
must confess to having a personal interest in this page, as in my spare
time, I am Jungle King Stevie Hyper D. Respect.

5: http://www.gravis.demon.co.uk/naturist/pages/nuff/bchs1-l.htm

According to this page, "naturists are said to use the remoter parts" at
Camber Sands. Remoter parts? Do they mean shrimping? The mind boggles. So
much for the advice on bringing swimming costumes.

6: http://www.cyberdarts.com/wdf/wdf99cal.html

Apparently, the 1999 English Open Darts Tournament is to be held at Camber
Sands this year. So make sure you know all the words to the immortal Dexy's
classic "Jackie Wilson says".

7: http://home.clara.net/yates/1998.html

I heard there were going to be some cracking birds at gaystock, and I was
right. No kingfishers, though. Sorry Peter.

"Camber Sands also attracted up to 70 Sanderling. Two Ruff flew over the
beach reserve on 15th and the beach itself attracted 545 roosting Curlew on
the evening of 10th. An attempt to count the numbers of gulls roosting there
on 23rd produced counts of 3,000 Black-headed, 16,000 Common and six adult
Mediterranean Gulls."

Finally, my favourite site... "We are a small troupe of majorettes from the
Hertford,Herts area. The girls meet twice a week to practice their twirling
and marching. The girls ages range from 9 to 19 and during the summer months
they attend various carnivals, fetes etc in the local area. The troupe
belongs to the UKFM. the united kingdom federation of majorettes and every
year attend the National finals at Camber sands in Sussex."

Good news for wee world worshippers! I hear that none other than Isobel
Campbell is due to make a guest appearance this year to demonstrate her
baton twirling.

*******

So there you have it: vervoids, christians, alcoholics, drum and bass,
naturism, darts, bird-watching and majorettes. Pretty much what I was
expecting anyway. See you there.

Oh, before I go, there's going to be another exciting pink lemonade social
at the poetry cafe this friday (16 April), with a guest appearance from
Sodastream who will be thrilling us with their Nick Drake/Smog acoustic pop
stylings. I'll put details up on the meeting board on the tweepster message
board in due course.

Keep it real

Stevie Trousers
