Sinister: Mummy, let me play croquet in my trutleneck with toffee-nosed Brits after this cup of English Breakfast tea.

I've been wanting to pot this for eons, but I've been off the list and then
was chained to the nursery. As far as I can tell, no other Melbourne
listees have yet posted this amusing review from one of our dailys. It was
printed soon after Belle and Sebastian got local distribution here earlier
this year.
Here goes:

The Boy With The Arab Strap
Belle and Sebastian **1/2
For those about to rock: stay away from The Boy With The Arab Strap. A
hugely popular cult act in the UK, Belle and Sebastian specialise in the
kind of breezy, immaculately arranged Sunday afternoon music that sounds as
though it has been made by people who play croquet and call their mothers
"Mummy". Impossibly British and turtlenecked in its restraint, it teeters
on the tightrope of twee, just winning out thanks to the hummable tunes and
the wry satirical edge of its lyrics. Those with an ear for classic
orchestrated pop and a taste for all things wistful will enjoy the
feather-light production values and sunny ambience.
Appreciation of The Boy With The Arab Strap will rest largely on one's
reaction to the breathy, toffee-nosed vocals evident throughout, which
betray a certain preciousness at the heart of this particular strain of
British pop music. A record for fanatical drinkers of English Breakfast tea
only. Blokey boozers beware.

This, from a publication that also made Mogwai's latest CD of the week with
a whopping 5star review.
Hope that amuses you for a while.
Jacqui
