YOUNG MARBLE GIANTS:
I beseech everyone on this list to find a copy of their one album, _Colossal
Youth_. Crepescule released it on CD; it's fairly easily found. Extremely
minimal postpunk: just a choppy guitar, melodic bass and Alison Statton's
indescribably pure, sweet vocals. The whole album feels submerged in a
slightly spooky darkness. I don't quite see early Cure or Joy Division
comparisons, but they are all from the same era. Speaking of which, Rykodisc
has just released the Gist's Embrace The Herd on CD; they were Stuart
Moxham's band/project immediately after YMG split up. It's an album of
melodic experiments that actually sounds more timely today than upon its
release. Um, I could go on about this for hours. If anyone is interested in
knowing more, I do a website about them: http://members.aol.com/ymgpage.
Please contribute to the message board; it's pretty much dominated by the
same 4 people these days and needs some new blood. How to tie this into
Belle & Sebastian...gosh, I can't, really. YMG and B&S are two of my very
favorite bands; does that count?
