hey all....
perhaps this should be limited to just Colin, but it seems that quite a few
folk aren't all that familiar with this fabulous band....
Snow Patrol, as they are now known and signed to Jeepster as such, were
originally called Polarbear, but they had to change their name because some
one from Janes Addiction (i think that is the right band) already had a band
in America name Polar Bear....so they changed their name to Snow Patrol not
too long after Stow College had released their single "Star Fighter Pilot"
which was put out the year after Tigermilk.
Starfighter featured three songs - with Gary on vocal & guitar, Mark on bass
and Richard Colburn on drums and keyboard.... also the third song "Safety"
featured Stuart Murdoch on wooden flute, Piano and vocals..... i am a LONG
time Patrol fan and was fortunate enough to see Stuart play this with them
live once... and it was grand.... my favorite lyric goes...:
"I hold back
just for a second or two
then i go down on you
It's so sore
Sore like the sweetest thing
when i go down on you
and all i have is
so sweet
so sweet"
it's a beautiful ballad.... for the first few months of the Patrols
"existance" (while Gary and mark were going to college in Dundee) Richard
played with them - including the makeshift gig - the first "Longest Day" in
Kelvingrove Park that was moved to the QMU due to rain... it featured
Polarbear, Astrid, The Bathers, The Pastels.... i can't remember who else,
but there were a TON of bands and then Belle & Seb closed the show....
after that their 'real' drummer finished his college work and moved to Dundee
from Belfast..... Richard was just filling in.....
i think they have a new guy who spins records for them now... i don't know
his name...
Snow Patrol are a GREAT band - it's a bit more electric (i don't think that's
the right way to say it) and 'hard core' than the Belle's - but Gary's lyrics
are extremely visual and, in my humble opinion, truly great...
Ireland has been banging on about these boys for nearly two years or so now,
and with good reason... if you get the chance to see them or buy their LP you
should... if you don't mind things that aren't all twee and whatever... they
are a great band.... hm.... i think i've said that enough now.
anyway, hope this bit of info is helpful....
