Sinister: socialism in theory and practice

Cher Sinistre,

I wish everyone would post again. The holidays probably have something to
do with it, but it's no good to do nothing in a state of siege. Me in
this big house watching time pass (if I had fleece I would wear it) and
you locked in your room making ribbons fly ("experimental syntax" borrowed
from Michael Jones, not experimental so much as revival but I don't know
the source). That must be why they had such detailed descriptions of the
toilet in _All Quiet on the Western Front_. Yesterday or today or at some
point I read that start up web sites are incurring huge losses to
establish themselves as brand names. SO this means that we should take
advantage of it while it lasts, but as armchair socialist revolutionaries
immediately switch after the special offers pass. (Come on, it's the
dialectic!) I'm listening to one of my purchases now: Gram
Parsons/Greivous Angel. It's only my second listen but I definitely like
it better than I did the first time when I was still a victim of the
anti-country music stance that is the mainstream position in the US today,
in a Marxist view the pathetic attempt of the bourgeoisie to distance
itself from the proletariat, which makes no sense really as the teeming
middle classes are the majority here. Hence a nation chokes on a
so-called alternastance. I have to say I like the folk side of country,
what little I've heard of Fairport Convention, Bob Dylan, Kate & Anna
McGarrigle, the Byrds, etc.

This year I watched Charlie Brown's Christmas Special, Olive the Other
Reindeer, and I'm waiting for the Simpsons to come on. Tomorrow is
Monday, the day to get started. I just realized the kind of person Linus
is supposed to be, brainy but childlike in the way only brainy people have
about them. The other day I was still asleep at noon, periodically being
awakened by messages being left at ten minute intervals on the answering
machine by my mother, when I decided I'd finally had it and leapt out of
bed except there isn't a phone in my room so I ran and answered the phone
in a really snappish but also groggy tone of voice. But of course it
wasn't her but him, and I just thought his voice makes him seem like Linus
(well it just occurred to me now). Disembodied voices are very
suggestive. Asking for my housemate.

The problem with The Boy With the Arab Strap is that it sounds too much
like the Gentle Waves. I can say that with perfect confidence without
having heard the Gentle Waves. But Isobel sure is lovely and she has a
beautiful smile (captured by Lesley Jo Miller who definitely has the best
photos of the band, aside from Sarah's photo of Stuart and Mick, Stuart
grinning like mad) and she has style, in terms of appearance. I'm all in
favor of band dictatorships.

Yours,
Youn
