As the new world expert on how Christianity can really fuck you up, I have
to agree with LJ: Christian music - like Christianity itself and religion in
general - should be a celebration of all that's good about the world and the
emphasis placed on Christ himself is misleading and dangerous to a certain
extent because - like our dearly beloved B&S, Divine Comedy, Fairport
Convention, Pulp, Tindersticks ("when do you lose the ability to step back
and get a sense of your own ridiculousness?" is a question that should be
asked of any religious fanatic) and so on and so forth - music at its best
should be inspiring and the lyrics - if any - should *say* something about
the state of humanity. That is why "If You're Feeling Sinister" means more
to me than "Shine Jesus Shine" which is both vacuous and unnecessary.
