the best felt record is all of them. the same formula is applicaple to
Dexys, as our own Keith Watson pointed out so eloquently. But if you can
find it, get 'Crumbling The Antiseptic Beauty' first, if only for the
fact that it was their first, and work your way up from there. There's
another nine to go after that, not counting compilations, although there
is not a new retrospective planned for this year, despite the dreams of
the list Seer. Saddly. There is a Vic Godard retrospective planned,
however, for imminent release, which kind of makes up for it.
speaking of retros, i've been playing 'Hindsight' by The Church the last
few days and it sounds a lot better than i ever remember... i think
perhaps i was put off because they looked like The Cult or The Cure or
some other sub-goth band beginning with C. And as everyone knows, i was
never ever a Goth. No siree. But some of the Church now sounds not
unlike Felt, only a bit more obviously psyched out. The youngsters on
the list, if still reading, will be yawning and bringing in my slippers
at this point. How very thoughtful of them.

"Pop" or "pop"? I'm lost.....

it's Pop. Sometimes. And when it's not Pop, it's pop, unless it's
obviously Rock, or indeed rock. Occassionally it might be deemd to be
Soul, but not like 'Soul'. Obvioulsy.
i hope that clears it all up for you.
and with respect to Stax, well yes i realise that there was a mish mash
of noise on Stax, as indeed there was on Motown, but you can't let
little details like actual facts ruin your theories, now can you? Pop
theorists have an unimpeachable right to make up any old bollocks if it
sounds funny and/or pretentious enough. i mean did Marcus Greil let the
fact that Bruce Springsteen records are actually shite deflect his
arguments? No he did not. I rest my case...
As for a sequel to Young and Foolish, well there is the Felt book that
will hopefully come together this year, as long as Lawrence doesn't pull
out. I suggest the cover for that could be a picture of Struan on stage
wearing his fave T-Shirt, and the title 'Belle & Sebastian Say...' It
has a certain ring to it, don't you think?
Or not.
All publishing houses stole my title of Belle Lettres and made a slight
change to protect them from copyright. So when you see the so-called
'genre' of Belles Lettres, it is in fact my idea all dressed up to look
marketable. It is another sorry chapter in the tale of how all my ideas
have been used to make money and fame for someone else. Long term
viewers will know that Stuart David is the worst offender. A writ is
with his solicitors as i type this. Possibly.
keep the faith,
the duke
