--did anyone miss that? In case you did, that was very funny. But then,
the list has been getting cheerier and funnier (sic?) lately, and I am
glad for it. and I blame it on the position of the planets for all
gloom and doom, not knowing what else to blame it on... not that I read
those horrid horoscopes, since the people who write them obviously have
a vendetta against me and all sagitarrians and possibly leos too ...
they're morose and depressed and undersexed and want to spread their
morbidity and depression and sort of absent horniness to all and sundry.

-- while everyone is on the subject of favorite writers, and Infinite
Jest (a dreary and godless book but very funny. that book upset me), can
anyone recommend a good Clarice Lispector book ... I'm suspecting I
can't get through apple in the dark because my translation of it is
terrible. If any of you are at all curious about her, she's a wonderful
Brazilian author and a little hard/dense. She creates these very subtle,
psychological landscapes in her novels. Please read cronicas, if you are
inclined to check her out. It is very easy going. In Brazilian
newspapers, their literary figures are given space to write whatever
they wish, columns that they call cronicas. In them, they directly
address the people. They may speak of everything from carnaval to
whatever crises and tiny rebellions that may be going on in the nation.
Her collection is wonderful, she writes beautifully and makes my heart
ache sometimes.

I have no new years resolutions. I have yet to accept this penultimate
year as the year before the end of time and 1999 will have to chase me
down and make me plead uncle before I admit it's power over me ... no
b&s content, I'm mourning the loss of my IYFS and Bryter Layter CDs.
Shall that be blamed on the planets as well? Wherever did they go?

Cynthia
