Dear Listees...
It's been almost one month since Arantxa posting about the relation between music and weather and it was only a couple of days ago that I realised that she had even mentioned my name. I'm sorry for not answering it at the time, again I hadn't been doing my homework and reading all your lovely e-mails.Just as her, I had been waiting for an inspiring topic to write to you. Now it seems that I have several, hehe, or at least it's just my opinion, but anyway, I'm not going to write long e-mails and I'm going to post them in parts.
First of all, Belle and Sebastian sound as great in the Tropics as they sound in Glasgow, Sydney or Toronto. It doesn't matter if I'm in the middle of a traffic jam in São Paulo or at the Ipanema beach. Their music takes me away (and I bet the same works for you!) from the reality I am and all its grimness and flaws and brings me back to somewhere on my mind. My favourite place. It's hard to describe how it is, like there's no translation for it. It's in my "own" language. The smell of certain types of food and perfumes, some stories and films, places in my city and music help me getting there. And Belle&Sebby are part of it.
I do believe that the weather has influence on music. Most of the people here are into "happy" songs. And Brazil is known abroad as the land of samba, Carnival and football. But as usual, a few poor guys like me and probably all my fellow brazilian listees don't feel like we actually fit in this "happinness". Hehehe... Maybe it's just because we can't dance at all? LOL No... In my case I guess it's because even though I LOVE the sun and it's vital for my photosynthesis deep inside me it's always cloudy and raining. And not that it's bad. It's just like that. And I'm not sad, I'm quite a happy and smiling girl. I feel at ease with this melancholy. I feel at home and I've found it, melancholy, smut and lyricism apart from a bunch of loonies from this lovely list all in B&S.
Maybe it's because I was born in the rainiest month of the year in Brazil: March. Waters of March. The rain was my lullaby. One of the things that struck me when I was in Ireland last year was the colour of the sky. So grey that it looked like led. And there was Innisfree under that sky and Celtic crosses and ruins and gingers...awww... lovely!
Don't you just love the sound of thunder? It's still sends shivers down my spine and I like to be all cosy watching the rain fall, drinking tea and reading... ;))
I know I did an awful bit of digression Arantxa but I hope you understand my point of view. Of course I have no clue what is Debenham but that doesn't matter. There'll be always a nice sinisterine willing to help a tropical brother/sister , right?
If "My funny valentine" doesn't work for those sunny days at your dad and you desperately need something more melancholic, why don't you try some bossa nova (Desafinado is on my mind now...)?
Well... there it is! I hope you all got what I mean...
xxx
