having snatched a brit award from under the noses of B*witched and
steps, belle & sebastian continue towards lo-fi world domination with
this pair of spin-off solo projects. as with the scottish group's
major works, both incline towards the whimsical.

bass player stuart david's looper is essentially an excuse for him to
ramble about childhood and treehouses over strumalongs and homespun
beats. the gentle waves - a dozen songs from singer and
multi-instrumentalist isobel, mates and band members - lap more
interestingly. her voice may be as thin as a winter reed, but her
gentle pastorals come shaded with woodwind and strings, and suggest
that, given a decent recording budget, she could produce something
more evocative of her loch-side landscapes.
