by douglas wolk, who also wrote a bang-up piece (in SF Weekly
and others) on belle & sebastian around the time TBWTAS appeared
in the US....and it's done in the style of _ink polaroids_,
no less. i think he gets the awkward and achey parts of
the weekender just right while somehow not entirely buying
into the essential loveliness of it all...which, as anyone
who went and is often pressed-upon to explain to friends
who know nothing about b&s and frankly think the
whole thing a bit odd knows, is hard to do...so i'm glad
he didn't.
"This photo shows the inside of our "chalet," which
came with the $140 tickets. As you can see, the
ruthless efficiency barely holds the sofa bed for two,
the narrow pallets, the miniature kitchen and the
bathroom. (Electricity and hot water cost extra.) On
the table are the two keys provided for the four of us.
Why? "That's our policy, sir," said the matron at the
front desk. We can't figure out if the idea is to prevent
people from hooking up or to make it inevitable."
(ah, douglas! i think it was the latter...not that i'd know....)
sorry for the dangling sentence. me, i'm still glowing.
