Sinister: Jim Croce and other Crooners

This past weekend i drove to washington and back listening only to
Tigermilk,  Sinister, Arab Strap, and Jim Croce's Greatest Hits over and
over.  From this statement you might quickly judge that i am in need of
some musical expansion. for this, i am asking your help. the last CD i
bought was.. um.. Tigermilk. years ago i used to buy a new/used CD every
friday... i have been slipping only because

1) i am finding it increasingly difficult to find music that i like as much
as B&S
2) i just fell out of the loop and don't know where to look anymore for
great music
3) i am broke
4) all of the above but especially 1.

well regardless i do want some help. i haven't even heard Looper or the
Gentle Waves yet.. should i start there? i want something as good as B and
S... i want to get those inside tremors that i feel when i listen to B and
S. i know you can't guarantee me that.. but, well.. who are your other TOP
favourite bands? 

oh i read mention here of Boys Don't Cry which i did see during the course
of my visit to DC. it was.. well.. indescribably horrifying and
heartbreaking and poignant. i very highly recommend it.

ps many of you are fantastic writers.. i read your posts and wonder if you
