Hello there
Nicky Dastoor, who was shakin' his booty with gay abandon on Friday night,
asked about mums in pop. And what a rich vein it is! Ladies and gentlemen,
I give you:
>>The Judds: Mother and daughter country duo with remarkable hair. If you
ever come round our way, Tim H will gladly show you his lovely collection of
Judds records.
>>Iris Dement: On her first record, my favourite post-Nanci Griffith
country-folk siren dragged her momma on to sing some ancient Appalachian
dirge. The results were mixed.
>>The fruit of the loins of Loudon Wainwright and Kate McGarrigle (sp?) is
handsome young Rufus, and I'm sure both of them have performed with their
son at various times.
>>Yoko Ono: Surely the Queen of Screech has appeared with one of the Lennon
brats at some time or other?
>>Patti Smith: has brought back the fine tradition of child labour by
enlisting the help of her son to play guitar on her last few records.
>>Norma Waterson: the Brit-nominated folkie is the raggle-taggle matriarch
to a whole clan of kids who sing with one finger in their ear.
>>The Carter Family: Hmmm.... not sure about this one. Was there a mother
among the Carter family members?
>>Lieutenant Pigeon: featured a band member's mother playing the immortal
piano line (on TOTP appearances anyway) on "Mouldy Old Dough".
Joe Cairns mentioned something about National Poetry Day. You will be amused
to know that at a meeting several months ago I did in fact advise the BBC
against using a web-based voting mechanism "Cos you'll get all the nutters
voting". They have only themselves to blame.
Went out to see Election on Saturday with the SE London Sinister masseeeev,
and it was terrific. Lovely music too...
Umm... some of you might be interested to know that trousercuts, the
magazine for girls and boys who want to be girls, is finally complete. I'll
send out copies to contributors in the next day or so. I'm still trying to
figure out a way of doing online ordering, and I'll try to do something
about it this week, but I'm a bit crap about things like that.
Ta ta for now
Stevie Troussé
