Sinister: Manvers in dark comedy

Hi all. It's me again, here to waste your time with my
thoughts on the new Belle and Sebastian song/single as
well as my observations on the Cleveland music scene,
something I know like 4 of you on this list care
about, but I thought that maybe if you guys had seen
some of the same tours we would have a point of common
experience. So without further adieu...

LEGAL MAN

Ok, so my first experience with this song was probably
less than ideal. I listened to it via real audio and
the quality was spotty at best. I think I need to hear
it via CD or LP on my stereo to make a good judgement.
Keith Watson said on Friday that it was a catchy tune,
and maybe he's right, but it's hard to make a
judgement when it sounds like you are listening to it
via a scratchy telephone connection.

YO LA TENGO

Great show, wierd crowd. There were numerous people
drinking wine (I found myself wondering when I had
arrived at the wine tasting party) and there was one
guy who looked like an overweight jock boy throwing
his arms around and dancing like a fool. He was
especially getting into it when Ira Kaplan launched
into some really discordant guitar lines. I think at
one point he elbowed a guy in the face and the guy
gave him a stern talking to, because past that point I
saw the ape boy's arms yearning to breathe free, but
practicing restraint, he just played air guitar
instead. It's not often that a crowd could ruin a
show for me, but by the time YLT came on for their
second encore in classic arena rock style, I was fed
up and yearning to watch IRON CHEF (which, thanks to a
technical glitch, I never got to see.)

CAT POWER

I thought Saturday would be better since I had a
ticket to see Cat Power, but it ended up being
postponed a night because Chan Marshall had car
troubles in Detroit. So instead my friend Liz and I
had an IRON CHEF marathon. Then Chan came into town
last night and played. She showed her typical (from
what I hear) fear of the crowd--her fear often
manifested itself in attempts at witty banter with the
audience during the middle of a song. Highlights
include:

1. Chan asking if some long dead Cleveland rocker was
in the crowd. This ended up generating a conversation
between Chan and an audience member who explained thew
rocker's unfortunate fate (that he committed suicide
in the 70s.)

2. Trivia time! She asked us what the city of
brotherly love was, to which the entire crowd ansered
"Philadelphia." She then asked what Detroit was. I
screamed "a hellhole!" She said "no, that's south
africa." ok.

3. This strange boy with a shirt wrapped around his
head walked up to the stage, stared at her for 5
seconds and walked away. Chan joked, "that's my
boyfriend. He likes to make me feel important." A
funny joke until you find out after the show that the
guy is selling Cat Power records in the back.

4. Chan asks if we'll all run to the bar if she tells
us drinks are on the house. This accentuates her fear
of the crowd and some of the less couth members of the
audience start screaming at her.

Anyway, if any of you saw cat power, it may seem that
I didn't like the show, but I did. I just found it
strange that she just wouldn't stop playing. She would
never take a break to receive much deserved applause,
but would instead do wierd changes and then joke with
the audience to cover up how wierd they were.

Last night was just crazy. I went to the apothecary to
get some cheap assed ibuprofin and on my way back to
my apartment (I live around the corner from the venue)
I was asked if I rode a scooter and a hippy tried to
sell me hash. Crazy.

A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY

I just got done reading this book and since I had a
nasty row with my father this weekend, I sat and fumed
for a good hour after I read it. I had to "clean the
palate" (for lack of a better term) by picking up my
copy of THE HOBBIT.

I am tired as shit today though.
