YO!

faking up a rampage mentioned wanting to be canadian and wanting 'a real
canadian lineage' which seems really preposterous to me. i mean, exactly
what constitutes a canadian lineage? everyone but the native canadians came
from some other place and got it on with people from other places who had
kids who were bits of both etc. i mean, i'm half-japanese and half-ukranian
so far as the genes are concearned but both my folks were born here so
um...yeah....canadian lineage? um...

sorry about that.

my last word on pink floyd:
i always hate talking about pink floyd because it just leads to too much
ickyness, and misunderstanding. really, it happens most with floyd, more
than with any other band. i don't know why.

so this is the last thing i'll say about floyd.
nick dastoor took me to town about floyd being something that i hated
because the scene around them is full of unbathed granola heads, when in
fact i hate floyd for thousands of really important reasons, not just
because jello biafra tells me i should. (although thats a pretty good
reason i think, also the granola heads are a really big turn off)

i actually own a few floyd records. i generally don't say i hate bands i
know nothing about. maybe hate is too strong, but they really do bore the
fuck out of me. in part because they take themselves so seriously and so
many of their fans take their seriousness so seriously (serious). not that
you shouldn't be serious, its just what they are being so serious about i
find really silly. being a curious sort i never really found their music
that deep or fascinating...i mean, what passes for 'innovation' in their
music is really just regurgitating things others did before and integrating
it into a really dull hard-rock sort of framework. not that regurgitating is
bad, but its bad when the copy is mistaken for the original, y'know. its
not like people walk around saying belle and sebastian invented the 3minute
jangly pop song... anyway, so then floyd throw in some limp guitar
work and some 'deep' psycho-crap and suddenly everyone is so
fascinated...like, air make this meaningless cheesy film-soundtrack album
and yes it does sound like pink floyd, but its cheesy and fun (its a score
to a pretty cheesy movie about things that happened in a cheesy decade, the
cheese is totally appropriate)...which is where i can like air and where i
can't like floyd...see?

its not that i hate grandiose things either...i mean there's definitely a
certain pleasure in excess. but for something to act and be perceived by so
many people as so weighty and such but totally lack the anything to
substatiate taking up that kind of space is really annoying to me.

and yes, kittens are probably the best things to come out of pink floyd
ever. although whoever named their cats that deserves to be beaten about
the ears with wet rhubarb.

as to the joe boyd connection: he may have produced some earlier floyd
records, but so far as i can be sure floyd produced most of their own work
and in many cases these sessions were engineered by alan 'i robot'
parsons....who's records i find to be among the very funniest things ever
recorded. i personally hold alan parsons responsible for 'that sound' that
i hate so much on floyd records.

and its not like i even dislike prog either. i love Italian prog bands like
banco and museo rosenbach and l'orme because their sooooo silly and weird.
its like getting all the boring english prog rock filtered through this
ludicrous opera world and then everything turns completely ridiculous. its
like pink floyd in drag.

speaking of slipknot:
my friend ben (who is on the list but never posts) told me this story. a
friend of his works at the warehouse, which is perhaps one of the all time
worst concert venues in toronto, it almost always sounds shit there...but
i'm digressing...and it so happens that a few months ago slipknot played and
after the concert had finished and most people had gone home there was still
this worried looking old guy running around looking around...so it turns out
that he was a worried father looking for his 15 yr old daughter whom he was
supposed to pick up after the show...so the staff looked here and there and
couldn't find her anywhere. so then they went backstage and looked in here
and there and found nothing and then they came to the dressing rooms.....
anyway, it turns out that that's where the fellow's daughter was and she and
the guy from slipknot where drinking coke and eating chips.

actually, that's a big lie...she was giving the slipknot guy a blow-job and
the kicker is:

HE WAS STILLWEARING HIS MASK!!!

i mean, do you think she asked for him to leave it on or what?
so the poor father looked like he was about to have a heart attack and
things went badly.

also speaking of ben:
he's visiting london and things so you all should be nice to him. you'll
know him by the way he avoids making eye contact and then runs away if you
try and talk to him. and
his lacoste shirts. he wears lacoste shirts. and has a belt.

yeah.

and i _didn't_ make fun of yr hair angel, i *complimented* you on it.

and frankly i dance like a spastic so i think i'm pretty innocent of rampant
anglophilia in dancing. but if the spastics ever go around looking for
people biting their style, then i'm fucking dead.

kicking it seizure style since 1980,

steve
