....Remember that children's game "Don't Break the Ice"  where you were
given those tiny red hammers and had to tap out a block of plastic ice
without collapsing the whole surface, well she kinda felt like that.
Like she had taken her own tiny hammer and tapped out a chunk in the box
that was squeezing down upon her heart, relieving some of the pressure.
Like the way her teeth relaxed when she removed her retainer in the
morning.  Spreading... expanding...slightly glorious.  The heat in her
cheeks began to lessen.  She felt the corners of her mouth slide upward
as she tore the letter into tiny ink-stained squares and stuffed them
into an empty tissue box she had temporarily been using as a waste
basket....
