Sinister: most inane post of the day - I swear it's true

I am confused by two things, and would appreciate if anyone could help.
Firstly, I just the new Delgados - by jingo it's brilliant (although Dave
Friedman's production makes it sound like a Mercury Rev/Flaming Lips album,
and the first track does sound like the theme from "Battlestar Galactica"
towards the end). Anyway, I keep reading that "The Great Eastern" is named
after a 'flophouse' in Glasgow. Excuse my Southern-hemispherian ignorance,
but what the hell is a flophouse? An answer mailed offline would be much
appreciated. I am really very very confused.

Second thing ... why does everyone spell "great" GRATE? Is that some new
cool thing? (Jeepers ... I'm starting to sound like my mum!)
