Sinister: riding trains for a hobby can be rad...

A pickle said

Whilst riding the old underground public transport today, I thought about an

a book I read last year called "Neverwhere" by Neil Gaiman (that Sandman
Comic guy). Is it true there are stations that are old and closed that you
go through on the way to other stations in the the London Metro? Is it also
true that there are these mysteriously dark cars that pass by when you are
waiting?

In new york you can call up the transport museum in Brooklyn and ask to go
on one of the tours of the disused stations and lines. It's not advertised,
so I've been told, you just have to ask.
Anyway, the guide has a special pass and you get on a normal train and he
uses the pass to take over for a little bit from the driver. You drive on as
usual, then he stops suddenly in the middle of a tunnel (I am driving in the
middle of a rather funny tunnel... ) and opens the doors. You and he hop
out, much to the amazement of the other passengers, and he leads you on foot
on this magical mystery tour. He knows all the places to go - from the
disused tunnels to the old stations that look like ancient ballrooms, with
vaulted ceilings and chandeliers...

Maybe the NY sinisterines should have their next picnic there?

I read a kid's book once about a girl who was an only child of a single
parent, and in the school holidays when she was bored and alone she used to
obsessively ride the underground to see how far she could go on a Zone 1
ticket. She was interested in making as many different patterns with her
journey as possible. I tried it once on the overground trains in South East
London, but it just made me depressed. The book turns into a bit of a boring
mystery story, but the image of her weaving her little webs of movement,
weaving her life into the city system, stayed with me.

ATP ho!! I can't wait. Only a few more hours, then me and the large pot of
chicken stew I have made for our Chalet's 1st dinner will be en route!!
Incidentally, anyone else who has been to atp before, and cooked, are there
plates and pans and stuff already there?

Take care all

Milla
