This is my first message to the list. My name is Holly, I'll be thirteen in a couple of months. I realize I'm probably a bit young for this mailing list, but it might comfort you to know that I don't get a chance to read through most of the messages. I must say that it's a nightmare when I don't check my e-mail for a few days.

My sister introduced me to Belle and Sebastian almost two years ago. We listened to If You're Feeling Sinister. At first, I didn't know what to think. Truth be told, I didn't like them much at all. However, my sister kept inviting me to listen to them, and I was too chicken to refuse. I didn't really think that I liked them all that much until I found myself humming the tunes to various songs. One day, I was listening to the CD, and I realized how much I liked Judy and the Dream of Horses. Long story short, they became my favorite band.

Sixth grade was a pretty kicked back year. My teacher, who is retiring this year, was 70 and gave everyone As, even if they didn't do any of the work all year. The work in class was easy, and I always finished early. So, over the course of nine months, I fill a whole notebook of B&S song lyrics, and drawings of what I picture when I listen to certain songs.

For my last birthday, my sister made me a tape of Belle and Sebastian songs. I listen to them everyday after school on the bus and on the way home. The following is a memory I'm going to submit to the Jeepster site, if they ever fix whatever problem their having with their site.

One day, at the beginning of the school year, I found myself waiting for the bus in the rain. At that point, I didn't know any of other kids (mainly boys) who rode my bus, because they rarely spoke to me. I was just the short girl with the instrument. Anyway, everyone was cold, wet, and miserable. I looked at the bench next to the bus stop, and the line, "Lazy Jane, all the time/Painting lines/You are sleeping at bus stops/Wondering how you got your name/And what you're gonna do about it" came to mind. I found myself smiling involuntarily, as I always do during this song. My smile only widened when I saw that everyone else was looking at me as if to say resentfully, "What's she so happy about?" After I decided to bring my walkman and tape of Belle and Sebastian songs to listen to on the way home, I've always hoped that it would rain on a day when Lazy Line Painter Jane came on, just so I could smile, while everyone else miserably braved the rain and cold.

Well, I think I've bored you long enough. Bye!

-Holly
