Dearest You Lot,
Welly well well, look who's been given a voice. The
nursery was a nice place to start. Very wise to put
padding on all the sharp corners (also, you're out of
booze). I've been enjoying, and lurking by way of the
archives for about 6 months. It's nice to finally
participate. I'm a Merican living in L.A.(I'm already
going to the L.A. picnic. This is my sinister persona.
See if you recognize my doggy style:), but have
actually moved all around including, London, Oslo,
Cooperstown NY, Key West, San Diego, Darien CT and now
Santa Monica CA. I forget who it is that's learning
Norsk (Idyl?), I lived there 4 years, but went to an
international school that spoke English, so I mostly
just remember the swears. The best and most commonly
used being (I'm spelling phonetically) Fee Fon. It can
be shortened (the delivery is stretched out though) to
just Faan (I think that might be the correct
spelling). I have no idea what it means, but rest
assured it's dirty. There, I think we're all up to
speed now. I seem to recall Norwegeans drink quite a
bit of Ribena too, only it's called Glug(sp?). They
mostly drink it warmed up, and the adults put a lil
somthin' somethin' in it.
Norway was a wonderful place to live. I miss it.
I've been saving up all kinds of things to say and
comment on, so forgive the lateness, and longness.
1. Best Joke Ever: Whoever said the bee joke where the
punchline is "fuck 'em I hate bees", that's my new
favorite joke and the only one I have at the ready if
someone asks me if I know any jokes. I was always at a
loss in that situation, so thank you.
2. Archel read the Watchman: First time I read it, I
turned the last page and flipped it right over and
read it again. Did you know Terry Gilliam has had that
on his slate to direct foreeeeeeeeever? So long in
fact that I don't think it'll ever be made. I don't
know if the hold up is over rights or what but it's
been over 10 years. For awhile I was going around to
every comic book store and cleaning out all their
originals. I would put them together and give the
complete sets to friends for their birthday.
3. For the guy who gave money to someone on a bus and
was chastised for it: I work in an area that's full of
homeless people and have to shut off, as I'm asked for
money on average 10 times a day. The day I read that I
was asked while eating lunch for some change, and gave
him a dollar. That was your kindness that crossed the
Atlantic.....and now I'd like my dollar back:) One of
my favorite memories of living in London was on my
first day of work, I went out to catch the bus and all
I had to pay was 1, and 2 1/2 P coins. I had no other
money. I was flat broke and counting on the few pounds
I'd make as a waiter to pay for dinner and my ride to
work the next day. I didn't know the bus wouldn't take
copper and if I missed this bus I would be late my
first, and likely last, day of work. The bus driver
would not make an exception, and wanted me off the
bus, when someone in line behind me said, "I'll pay
for the man". I'll remember it as one of the nicest
things a stranger has ever done for me. It's made me
go out of my way to assist travelers. So don't
discount even the small gestures.
4. ListCrush: I don't think I've ever met so many
eTtractive people in one place. I've got the standard
JenOwl crush, but I shy from competition and I'm
worried she'll start to feel too much pressure from
suitors, and post less as a result. JenOwl, you really
should turn your adventures with the hard kids into a
comic. GloomCookie is a great example of how this
might be done. It's an excellent goth comic. There's
an Isobel (cruel much? bitch) and a Sebastian (the
monster under his bed keeps eating his girlfriends) in
it too.
OK so here's the deal on my crush, I saved a post a
few weeks ago with the intention of replying, but
hadn't gotten around to it. Then there was a post from
someone recently that I also decided to save and write
to because they made me laugh and sounded nice. When I
checked my saved mail, I was suprised to see that both
posts were written by the same person. Coincidence or
crush? I choose crush, as I see no reason to get
stingy with them now. I'm not supposed to divulge who
it is though am I? It's prolly for the best....for I
am hideous:)
5. (): You may be wondering why I use parenthesis even
in cases when it seems odd. (It's a little trick I use
to make the dear reader [you] feel as though I've
taken you into my confidence). Email me privately if
you'd like to know what I'm doing to you when I put
you in brackets.
6. Books: Someone was asking for suggestions and I've
got a couple of good ones. Alain de Botton has some
great books on love. Someone's website suggested it as
"for the lover on sabbatical" and I agree. It's
insightful, analytical, and accessible without being
cynical. He's a quirky author who loves using diagrams
to illustrate a point. He's swiss, 32, and I believe
teaches in London at a University...I mean
University:) "The Romantic Movement" is my favorite
followed by "On Love". He may be hugely popular in
England and I just don't know it, so this could all be
old news. In my opinion the man is a genius.
I primarily read fantasy/scifi though, so with that in
mind, Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series is the
greatest adventure my brain has ever been on.
7. BigStu and his movie review: .....try to stay away
from crappy movies, K?
8. Goodies: Does anyone have any old Viz comics they
aren't using anymore? I'll trade you for something.
9. Cats: I'm a cat whisperer.
10. Randomness: I was watching the NBA finals the
other day and I noticed all the basketball players
were always pointing at things. Whenever they scored
or dunked or did something well, they would point at
people. I think I might start doing that.
That's more than enough. I'll stop there. Nothing left
now but hover, think, and send......perhaps they'll
proclaim me their king.
Squishings,
Glurp
PS. Just bought Dashboard Confessional CD's (both and
the Drowning EP). I have a new obsession now.
