Sinister: living the dream

hello,

I should introduce myself. My name is Ian and I live in Dublin. Some of you
may have read a mail from Rener last week. I am her man-bitch.

I went to Scotland to see B&S last weekend (which already seems like an
eternity ago), catching the gigs in Aberdeen and the second night in
Glasgow. They were a lot of fun, and compared very favourably with the last
time I'd seen them. This was in Dublin's Olympia, where the sound was
rubbish and the band gave the impression of being completely unrehearsed.
That was the gig where Stuart Murdoch got so sulky he smashed his acoustic
guitar. And then apologised. This time round it was nice to see that B&S can
actually do the business live, and seem to enjoy doing it too.

I went to the picnic in Kelvingrove last Saturday, but because I'm *shy* I
didn't talk to too many people. and the people I did talk to, I meant to ask
them for their e-mail addresses, but I was too *shy* even for that. So
George & Rich from DC, Katrina from Halifax, and Marianna from Perth/Londo,
mail me offlist if you read this and want to be my special e-mail friends.

Thanks to whoever brought the donuts for offering around before I scarfed
into them, and to Katrina for the Reeces Peanut Butter Cups or whatever they
were. And I was fascinated by the conversation about how a "friend" of a
listee used to make seagulls explode by feeding them bread soaked in
bicarbonate of soda. I must try that sometime.

Trish Brazil was looking for 'Jonathan David' in Dublin, as was I. I
eventually found it in Virgin, which surprised me, given that they normally
don't have anything by anyone. 'JD' itself is great, a complete romper
stomper, and while 'Loneliness of the Middle Distance Runner' is not quite
as good as other versions I have heard, it still does the job. But 'Take
Your Carriage Clock...', what's that all about? Ripping off bad songs like
'I've never been to me' is neither big nor clever.

It's interesting the Pinefox should mention "the Great Gatsby", as I've been
thinking about that a lot lately. I haven't read it in years, but bits and
bobs of it stick in my mind. The eyes of TJ Eckleburg in particular.

Anyway, I'm off now.

Death to false metal!

DV
