And I heard it for the first time on Saturday! enjoy your respective days, wherever u may be. byeeeee ____________________________________________________________ Yahoo! The same request applies to the New York & Surrouding Area Wing too, as I will be visiting that neck of the woods for the three weeks before Iceland. Maybe a picnic even? Message-ID: Hello my dear sinisters and sinisteriens, Its been a while, the winter has passed and to my surprise the summer here again, it always seems to knock on the door a little bit earlier every year. Time has a new meaning in my life these days, actually it feels more like a time interval. Every day is just a routine that is followed. One day after another, some highs & lows, but nothing that kicks you of the curve, in reality this period is just time like any other day, but in my mind it has no meaning, it leaves nothing behind. From nothing to nothing is no time at all. But soon this will change, as Im changing my routine, moving to a different city, different country, and a different world. Ive got two words for you people London baby! Thats where I hope my time will be filled with interests, joy and tragedy, for nothing else can feel more like life. Thats the time that seems long in your memory, thats the time I long for. See you in London, edda _________________________________________________________________ STOP MORE SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister at missprint.org. It's at the Queen Margaret Union, and it starts directly after "School's Out". Entertainment will come in the form of a ceilidh, special guests DJs, maybe some karaoke, maybe some music, and whatever else we think of before then. We've got three floors to fill, so there should be something for everyone. Tickets are £10 with all profits going to Friends of the Earth Scotland. You can buy them online from www.wayahead.com or www.tickets-scotland.com. Alternatively you can buy them in person from the QM box office in Lilybank Gardens or Tickets Scotland in Argyle St, Glasgow. I think I might well start again. But first, I have a plea. Does anyone have two tickets for Somerset House on the Sunday, but would rather have two tickets on the Saturday? I have two for the 17th and would much rather have them for the 18th, as I can make that date whereas I can't make the 17th, if you see what I mean. I hope you're all well - the weather is gorgeous today, but I'm stuck inside. Rob _________________________________________________________________ It's fast, it's easy and it's free. The reasons for my bravery are resent requests for advice for what to do and see in Reykjavik AND the fact that I am myself in Scotland, and Glasgow for this weekend. I know this comes a wee bit late since it's already Friday night but if anyone of you going to the Botanical Gardens tomorrow happens to notice a boy looking a little lost and carrying an "Interflug" bag come over and say hello. I will keep my eyes open for upside-down badges :) You could also write me. I'll check my mails sometime tomorrow. So.. about Reykjavik then. I was living there for nine months, from September to May and am now on my way home to Finland. I could recommend several bars but in my opinion the best are Prikid (on Laugavegur) and Sirkus (on Klapparstigur). Prikid has a very comfy atmosphere and old wood interior, and it has a good offer for beer before 10 pm (250 Icelandic kronur). Only downpoint is that like in any place in R-vik, there's hardly any other people before midnight... There's an absolutely wonderful small cafe called Mokka on Skolavordustigur (2nd "o" should have 2 dots on top but I can't find them on this keyboard :P Oh well..). Get waffles, everyone seems to love them. Up the hill on the same street is 12 Tonar record store. Ask the helpful and well-informed staff for recommendations, listen to cd's and get some complimentary espresso. It's possibly the best record store I've ever been to. Not big, but very comfortable. You could also see Hafnarfjordur town south of Reykjavik. It's close and very cute. City bus lines 140 and 150 go there. On the way you can go to the Kringlan shopping mall if you like, but it's nothing special. Just a mall.. I went there once during my stay. So there. Last summer there was a flea market behind the Sirkus bar. It was a lot better then the "official" flea market, Kolaportid. For daily events listings, see one of the newspapers (Morgunbladid, Frettabladid or DV) or ask the guys at the record store. During summer months there is also a free fortnightly magazine called Grapevine which also has events listings. I have to say "sael!" to Edda and "saell!" to Gummi and apologise for not ever getting around to contacting you two while I was in Iceland... I wasn't feeling too social at times. I guess that's typical for Iceland. It is for finland, anyway ;) Bye now. I'll continue my (futile?) search for Belle fans among the hostel guests. Take care! Also, look out for Martin Gordon's CD Hogwash (?) since me and Amanda sing back-up on the track Fuss Me. I was told there is a weird filter over our voices though, I have nto heard it myself. But it will be interesting none the less and it was a fun experience! Anyway, since then, and most probably for the better, i have become aware in the style of a caveman wandering into the NASA headquarters of the sheer myriad of pc-based technology available for such musical efforts, so despite lacking a pc, this could be a more sensible way of going about things...? mmm splurge...the wind is blowing itself into a frenzy and am about to spend 2 days and nights on a large boat off the coast of norway. hope the Glasgow show rocked.. i'm off to get acquainted with the interior of a bucket. adios amigos :> ___________________________________________________________ALL-NEW Yahoo! And it's so good to sing along to. "but what about meeee??? I longed for my guitar so bad.. The streets of NY probably saw me air-guitaring like a mad fool the whole time I was there. I wanted to buy this kid-sized STANDALONE electric guitar too that I saw at toys-r-us! It would have been just the thing to get me beaten up again.. After the beating for singing Like Dylan in the Movies in London. I'd get fucked up for playing Stay Loose with a toy-electric guitar in New York. Maybe I can start a career in getting myself assaulted for committing Belle and Sebastian related activity in the capitals of the world. Next stop, human beatboxing Electronic Renaissance in Moscow. Doing Jazz Hands to I'm a Cuckoo in Tokyo* --- I need someone to karaoke this Stay Loose song with me and then we can alternate the singing of the bit where it goes "and I know it could be me I'm always asking for more MORE more MORE" more of that please. But yeah wow whilst in New York I watched a bit of baseball on the telly (or "TV" or "Television" as the Americans called them - how odd!) and Mike Piazza was batting, wow. That's excitement. He was a bit gay - he kept yanking other player's willies. They didn't seem to mind though, some even wore shirts that proclaimed to the world that they were all his yankees!!! ---- I'd like to also mention that Neil Robertson once sold me a B+S ticket outside one of their gigs, and he charged me £11, plus a hug, for it. Or maybe I paid £11 for a hug and he gave me a B+S ticket for free. On Ticket related news, if anyone has one or two Saturday Somerset House gig tickets for sale, please sell them to me! I'll pay up to whatever you paid for it. Plus a hug. Two hugs if you give me the tickets for free. Backstage Pass gets you a snog. etc. Indeed, Ken *in Tokyo! in the style of Thin Lezzy-o! We all have to do it. We all get to whinge about it. Anyway, the great thing is that only the way up from London to here, I stopped in on Glasgow for the 'Belle & Sebastian and friends' FREE concert at the Botanic Gardens. Did anyone else go? The night before, I went to Sufjan Stevens at 'Stereo', which was a fine warm-up, and we even [are pretty sure we] saw Isobel (Campbell, that is), looking very happy with a young man, and with her lovely pony-tail swinging off into the uncommonly mild Glasgow night. So, Saturday, and by way of some kinda miracle, the city took on tropical traits and it was a scorcher! Straight down the Brel (smashing pub with great grassy slope out the back) we went for a few pre-gig pints, then off to the park. Got to the park - great! Realise there's nowhere to buy booze - bad! Back outta the park (sneaking past security men eating ice lollies, God love 'em), and managed to sweet-talk our way into an Off Licence that was threating to close coz of demand... So then we're back in the park again, and settling in for the show, and WHAT A SHOW! The band played favourites from all eras - from Dylan in the Movie right through to Stay Loose, and it sounded amazing! Monica Queen made a guest appearance for LLPJ, and there was a REAL LIFE piper for Sleep The Clock Around (which I heard from the portaloo queue, but never mind). All in all, it was an immense evening, and a roaring success by all accounts. We didn't make it to the after party, although we DID try our best to go see Uncle John & Whitelock, but too many Tennent's we stacked against us, I'm afraid. Thanks to the band - Saturday was what it's all about: a really good way to say 'cheers' to the folk of Glasgow for being totally and utterly fucking marvellous. I'm sure the sun shone stronger just for y'all. Love, like it sprays from a dropped can, Miss Ho PS - Hear! hear! to Neil for scuppering that shocking attempt to sell tickets won in a competition. No - I am on a trek now: head south again, up to a bus stop where the advert for sausages depicts JJ and the schoolgirls turn out to be holidaying Americans. Endless roads of grey matter down south into anonymity: Stillorgan feels like a trellis of highways. 1960s modernization Ireland. The bus heads off the map, takes in every available permutation of the posters for European election candidates with their warm real phoney gas man TD smiles. Dun Laoghaire and south with little fuel in me own tank. Like you-know-who. Heading out again I declare, - I'll be back. One day. Pints below the stained glass of Fitzgerald's where the oldsters aggressively ask each other, - Would you like a drink? and the curate brings me mine and offers a merely approximate charge at first. Although, I should say this- it's probably better just to stream it, because otherwise the website will collapse into bandwith-exceeded coma. The song, by the way, is amazing. Stuart definitely gives a nice Michael Jackson-esque 'unh' in the first thirty seconds of the track which = pure hotness. I feel as if this is maybe the first Belle and Sebastian song that could be appropriately played at an uptown coke-party. Thanks also to the person repeatedly bellowing for 'String Bean Jean', which is normally a real drag, but which resulted last night in them playing the song, which is probably my absolute favourite of theirs. Well, probably everyone but me, but that's besides the point. They have a B&S competition going on just now, and will be featuring highlights from this past weekend's botanic gardens gig on next week's show. So there you go. Don't tell me I don't do anything for y'all. I'll even provide you with a handy link. I bet loads of sinisterenes were, I just couldn't be arsed to search them out, as it was PACKED. What an odd crowd too eh? The highlight of the day had to be getting chatted up by a 41-year-old Ned who wanted to know more about this great band called Belle and Sebastian. He stunk of beer and was a bit scary but ended up being surprisingly sweet and harmless. "I bought their first album, what's it called, Boy with the Arab Strap? The green one? You know? Well, I like it and all and tell me more. Are they good? I mean, I think they're good but I notice you've been singing along so you must know about them right?" Aww. Bless. Afterwards, we (me and my crew, not me and scary old Ned) - and about half of the Bowlie kids too it seems - swung by the Woodside for more great sounds, and sweaty dancing. Very sweaty. Ick. I made a new friend there too, the most adorable Japanese boy whose name I can't remember and couldn't spell even if I did. I've been seeing him at loads of gigs around town and finally introduced myself. And we danced. Awww. I bet he's on here. Hello there sweetie. Did any of you go to the official aftershow thing? Do tell about it. I'm curious. That's about all I have to report, really. I'm back up in the middle of nowhere north-east Scotland, twiddling my thumbs and watching too much TV and biding my time until my next foray down south... and SLOVENIA! Woo! Holiday! Gosh I'm dull. Hope y'all are better. And apologies for being incommunicado fo so long. I wish I could say it's because I've been too busy but we all know that's not true. I'm just lazy. And bored. I guess this is just an excuse, as I am trying to find an excuse to secular and pseudosecular intrinsic laziness. well, anyway, I should have realised by now that the better plans are the unplanned one. In fact, everything started out on last Friday night, after myself and the lovely Mr. Jim Pourpletrousers went to the Magnetic Field in Hammermith. The gig has been absolutely excellent, they played a full acoustic set, in two parts, featuring most (if not all) the songs from the last records and highlights from their back catalogue. I have to admit I didn't have their new album, but was so enthusiastic that I got it almost straight away after that, and there are al least a handful of song which are definitely great. I got the feeling that Stephen Merrith sense of humour is getting sharper and sharper, but, might be is only an impression of mine, not as bitter as it use to be. It reflect quite a lot on the stage performance as everyone looked very relaxed and they looked like enjoying their selves as well, which is always nice to see. Anyway, right on my way home, I realised I had my change of tube line was right a train station, and I couldn't resist all the sensible thoughts about those letters the bank sends to your address and that they call account balance, and just, essentially run, but that was not to let the last service leave the platform without myself, not that it would have mind, but, I would have reasonably had, and got myself a ticket for Glasgow . There should be something magic about Scotland that I can't define. It can be the endless sunlight in the summer. It can be the Clyde. Can be the fact that there are kids running on the top of the walls of castles and you can spot them from the train window. Well, there should be a reason or not. But doesn't matter. By midday I was happily in the botanical garden. The day has been absolutely brilliant and shiny. So much that I almost got a tan! Not that I am really interested in that, but when I said that to one of my colleagues, Chris who's from Edinburgh, he looked at my in disbelief, and probably he still honestly think, I've actually skived work on Monday because of a drink binge on the coast or on a Greek island but, let's try to add some content to this randomness. Belle and Sebastian were absolutely great, I think. Might be I'm just letting myself being influence by the rather rare wave of good mood, but not, I think it was very good. Actually, at present, can't wait for the Sommerset House gig which is JUST in a few weeks but looks like an endless time. Miss Ellebelle had a call for a picnic on the occasion: it seems more then reasonable to me, have to say. What a better opportunity for having enjoying the sun with the people in the park? Going back to the gig, I not very good at remembering the song list, and haven't put enough effort to collect one from the sound guys (that by the way, were a lot!) so more or less randomly, they played quite a few from the last record, as obvious, but also a good selection of oldies favourite, including, as far as I can remember, Julie and the dream of horses, the stars of track and field, like Dylan in the movies and dogs on wheels, which was my favourite act, by the way, together with lazy lane painter Jane, when Monica Queen also joined on stage: brilliant! They also looked extremely relaxed even when a football carrying the Brazilian flag colours has start to bounce over the stage, a few times, and particularly when an idiot decided to throw a bottle of water at the band. By the way Steve exhibit in a "superbowl-like" kick of the aforementioned football which could have valued him a convocation for next Scotland international: nice. Camera Obscura played a rather short set, but it was very lovely. Of the bands playing in the early afternoon I have to say I quite enjoyed the red bed society, while I was quite happy of being entangled in possibly the longest queue ever for a toilet, when a band, of which I can't remember the name, but who definitely looked like and sound much like INXS were on stage. Especially the guy wearing a suit, with a white tie, in that hot, needs some sort of compensation from a human right found or something like that I also try to pretend I knew where to go in Glasgow, and off course got lost, and dragged the shameless Mark Hester with me, in a useless walk to Kelvinhall tube station, when we should have actually walked to Kelvin bridge. The advantage of having a single circular tube line is that you can to the place you need rather quickly anyway and that was the Winchester Club. The flower power were fairly entertaining, Pipas definitely excessively shambling guess they needed a DJ in between one song and another, possibly the pause being longer then the song their selves which wouldn't have been that bad otherwise I probably need a little bit more of patience. The club was packed and the DJ choices excellent, I can't remember a great deal, but me and Patrick dancing (alone) on the Clash, was fairly funny! Then it became the hotter spot on the planet, but that didn't keep people away from the dance floor, until the lady on the door almost literally shuffled them off the place. Shame I can't really take a train to Glasgow all weeks mumble! Gigs gigs gigs! I might imagine some living in London of might like to know that Sodasteam are playing Friday, which is tonight, at the Sheppard's bush hall... I know... I planned to write this on Monday, but then I should have known myself better. I didn't mean to clash with Astrid meet up at how does it feel, but just, you know, I think they are absolutely lovely and the concert generally finishes early enough that one can get to both places talking about being sensible: not really. I like the colon today. Only in its grammatical point of view. I suppose. Message-ID: Haven't written in a while, but a few things are on my mind. First, what is the second chord in Bigmouth Strikes Again? The ones on the popular guitar tabs are wrong (C#M, E, F#), it just doesn't sound right (but I can't figure out what it is). I was watching a Franz Ferdinand interview while strumming when I suddently bumped into C#M with exactly the write tempo, when I realized it was a smiths chord and now my dilemma. It's stunning to me that Franz Ferdinand's popularity has surged in the states. Apparently they are slated to appear (or already have appeared) on Pepsi's Smash American show, which is a pure spectacle of shite. I have a feeling that popular"indie" music as we know it will be the next genre to blow up huge in the states. Suddenly during the past year or so, American networks like the WB and Fox have been playing bands like Death Cab constantly during the backrounds of shows. I scored the Feelies first CD two weeks ago -- I couldn't believe it, i've been looking for it for two years -- it's very hard to find. Anyway, if you have not heard these guys, I highly urge you to track them down -- they are the missing link between Velvet Underground/Television and the Smiths/REM and other post-punk. I won a Television CD from our local station a year ago and I liked the CDs and since then i've been trying to buy other highly influential obscure bands. There's record label website somewhere that has MP3 samples. Is it me or is the singer from the Darkness look just like Frampton from Frampton comes alive? I was stunned the other day when shopping for CDs, i ran across a Frampton cover and I initially thought it was a Darkness CD till i saw the title. Just caught me off gaurd. The aforementioned Feelies CD that I found the other day caught my attention because I thought it was Weezer's debut album -- they looked almost identical. I heard Beulah's breaking up, but they're playing a free show in NYC in August in case anyone's interested. I may go, but i'm first looking forward to seeing Franz Sunday in DC. I saw Dale from the Melvins in the store once. You really couldn't miss him, with his huge hair. Supposedly Todd Haynes shops there too, but I never saw him. Anyway, that leads me to the point of my email: the reason I quit my job is that I'm moving to New York in a week or so to go to library school, and Kittenmouse Radio is ending. Or at least, put on hiatus until I find a new radio station in NYC. I'll be on the air tomorrow evening, and next Monday, and then that's it. That's the end. I think I will be quite hard to miss. Also, I am in the mix cd for the site www.blandband.nu, called blandband.nu vol 1 - songs for a trade. It really is quite exciting to have your band on a CD with other people who make great music, ih! Yes, it was one of Kat's first proper appearances. Also, look out for Martin Gordon's CD Hogwash (?) since me and Amanda sing back-up on the track Fuss Me. I was told there is a weird filter over our voices though, I have nto heard it myself. But it will be interesting none the less and it was a fun experience! ANyways, must now go and socialize with my friends, see you Friday hopefully I am looking forward to going to England so much I could DIE! Well, I won't, hopefully, but it will be pretty damn nice I tell you! Take care, love Astrid Ps. Also have now started writing my first proper novel. Might be any out of maybe five different starts. Hmmm. _________________________________________________________________ Lättare att hitta drömresan med MSN Resor http://www.msn.se/resor/ +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister at missprint.org. Message-ID: Dear Sinister, After disappointing missing on meeting Astrid at HDIFTBL, I don't think I can bear further disappointment in missing on seeing the rest of you who are going to be in Glastonbury 2004! Did you know Belle and Sebastian are playing??? Well, they are! They're playing between 19:00 and 20:15 on Sunday, at the Other Stage! http://www.glasto.theconvent.net/Glastonbury2004online.htm So, how about a sinister glasto picnic?? The weather is going to be FUCKED! And then sinister boys and girls can roll about in the mud and get dirty! But oh no!! Where shall we meet??? When shall we meet?? Fuck! The place is so big???? WELL! I have a cunning plan! If you look on that link, after THE DIVINE COMEDY playing on Sunday, there are all kinds of shite on and sod all anything else, and I'm going to see THE DIVINE COMEDY on Sunday, so how about, meet up AFTER the divine comedy gig, which finishes at 14:45. In front of the other stage!?? No one will be there cos The Ordinary Boys are to be on next. And then we can get drunk and stuff and get ready for BELLE AND SEBASTIAN!!! And work out chorographed dance routines to "Beyond the Sunrise"!!!!! Does that sound good? Shit man, let's meet up all the time anyway!!! If you're bored phone me 07967 755446!! We should all meet on Thursday before all the gigs start, too! Maybe around 7ish, and drink PEAR CIDER!!! At the BROTHERS BAR perry stall if it's still there! http://www.missprint.org/sinister/mhonarc/200306/msg00069.html That was the plan last year! I was illusive last year though and didn't get there til Friday, won't make that mistake again! Whilst at Glastonbury I'm going to attempt to get beaten up for telling everyone how much I LOVE MY CAR! BUT TODAY I THINK I'VE GONE TOO FAR. I don't even have a car! I haven't got one! Anymore! Shit morrisey will be there too! Fucking A! And Muse! Erm yeah, woot.. See you at the farm. I was sitting under the vicar's sycamore tree and he came out of the kitchen with some biscuits and offered one to me. I remember I was quite shocked that he was such friends with the vicar but didn't believe in God. He didn't seem to believe in much, really, just quaking and biscuits. It must have made a lot of crumbs. I waited in on Saturday morning for a friend to come round, so had the chance to listen to Belle and Sebastian on Jonathan Ross. He asked them a question, in his wubber-lipped way, about why on earth their album titles are so long. The gang seemed a little offended. Stuart said that their label tells them the same thing - they could be so much more famous if their song titles were a little more snappy. Stuart was quite snappy himself, actually. He really is prickly at times. My friend arrived late, so I didn't have to make excuses for being in on a sunny day. I could hardly have told him the reason why. Marauding Murdoch was around on Sunday, too, in the Observer listing his ten best British albums. It was quite pleasing to see that only three of the albums he chose made it into their Top 100 British Albums (http://observer.guardian.co.uk/omm/story/0,13887,1241254,00.html), as the whole thing was a pretty dull and predictible exercise. The Britannia music club catalogue has more surprises in it. For those who are interested, here is his list. I'm glad to see that the West Midlands are well represented: 1. Poem Of The River / Felt 2. Victorialand / Cocteau Twins 3. Forever Breathes The Lonely Word / Felt 4. You Can't Hide Your Love Forever / Orange Juice 5. London Calling / The Clash 6. The Smiths / The Smiths 7. The Specials / The Specials 8. Y / The Pop Group 9. The Raincoats / The Raincoats 10. Colossal Youth / Young Marble Giants I wonder if those bands ever had arguments about how long their album titles should be. Has anyone bought the new single yet? Reviews please!! So please, do post. Every one of you. But I'm not complaining. I don't have the right to do so, cause I haven't contributed myself; that's why I'm writing this so that I can do it at the end of the mail. Complain that is. And because B&S has released a new EP and nobody's mentioned it! (I think..?) It's raining in Oslo today, and it's been raining for a week now. Last monday I was going to have a day of sports. Running, throwing and jumping and stuff. This was something my school decided by the way. Great fun. I put on my raincoat, ran to the underground with an umbrella in my right hand and an apple in the other. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, and I hoped it would help me keeping the doctor away. Far away. It was raining. Not just a quick shower. We tried to go through with it anyway, but after half an hour of track and field activities whilst holding umbrellas, a sensible person decided it was enough. It was nearly as the day after tomorrow when the tide(?) come rushing in, only that there are few of those skyscrapers here in Norway. This is typical. This is summer! I read in the paper today that the average temperature's been 14,1 degrees in Oslo. And it's June! Someone do something! Isn't there a global warming going on? Money and resources are unfairly divided between the world's inhabitants, but so is the weather! Strange though that it's nearly true that: rich country = brrrr, i'm freezing, oh no! not rain again! noooo!!! please!! relatively poor country = oh, this is okay. sun again, but no money Sierra Leone = I'll give you anything for an air conditioner!! (although i don't own anything) It would be GRRRREAT if the rich countries could buy som nice weather from the poor countries. I believe that all countries would be approximately just as wealthy then. Someone invent something that makes it possible to buy weather! It'd solve all our problems. Or we could do it the old-fashioned way; revolution in the summertime. Hasta la victoria siempre! BOOKS EP 1) Your Cover's Blown hmmm.... was this the right disc or did I incidentally put on my sister's Michael Jackson disc..? Oh, that's right. That was a cassette.... I suppose it's Belle & Sebastian then but... HELP! "How do you have my number?" AHHH!!! "Why don't guide me; you be the driver?" That's Struan saying "AHHH!!"!!! WHAT IS THIS?!? ..well, it's quite catchy actually. I really like it. The DISCOISH guitar riff and the playful electronic noises. And then after three minutes it slows down.....: "I'll go on my own......" And then a paranoid Spanish march/Something of the Kill Bill soundtrack about a kid starting her cool caressing and undressing. and back again. it lasts for 6 minutes, but feels like 3. not that far away from Stay loose, probabaly, but the "AHH!!!"... gives the song a bit of a, ummm, Ah!-feel to it. And for once it feels like Richard is the most important musician... And the bass-line is cooool. It merely proves Struan's genious: he makes disco, michael jackson, "AH!!!"s, Tarantino, cool caressing, aberrations, bummers in the summer, potted plants and boxlike houses sound cool, catchy and totally natural. I mean; why do it differently? To sum up: Unusual, but great, Great, GREAT! 2) Wrapped up in books We all know this. Wonderful. Probably my favourite off DCW together with If she wants me, Cuckoo and Piazza. I think you all know what this sounds like. If you dont: er...? 3) Your Secrets The best track on this EP! An instant classic. I'd heard a radio version, and was surprised to find that it had more of an accoustic feel to it on record. It's just a perfect pop song. Accoustic guitars, hammond organ, and a melody line drenched in hooks. And Stuart does one of his best ever vocal performances. Wonderful. 4) Cover Mr. Geddes found some of the tapes used to record Your Cover's Blown and decided he'd fools around with them a bit, testing his DJ set; take the worst parts of Your Cover's Blown and make them even worse. It's a great remix. The video can be found on the internet; have a look yourself The videogame can be found on the internet; have a look yourself. (though i think it's boring.. but i don't have the patience to play computer games) RIOT ON AN EMPTY STREET Kings of Convenience's second album is great. When I came home and played Books and ROAES i thought maybe they'd given me Michaels Jackson and Simon and Garfunkel. Homesick, Misread, I'd rather dance with you are great tunes. Another great norwegian band is called The Loch Ness Mouse. I love their debut album called Flair for Darjeeling although I must admit i don't have an idea what darjeeling means.. BARCELONA Next week I'm going to Barcelona. Which is nice I suppose. But I would rather joined my friends to The Quart Festival and seen Shins, Jim Stark, Snow Patrol and Moz. Ah.... If you REALLY want to give me an advice on what I could do/see in Barcelona or Catalonia then; okay. You're allowed to tell me. It would even make me happy. SCANDINAVIA Ah, not much.. just a little football near the end; HEJA SVERIGE!! ASTERIX But I think now I'll retreat to my room and read my french Asterix and Obelix cartoons. It's hard to understand, but when you do; it's even more fun. Wish my sister a happy happy birthday! "Take her to dinner, use her boyfriend's money" why Stuart? Why? Anders Ps. Could someone please tell me the answers to these questions: 1) What is a "doozer"? 2) Why isn't the word "doozer" in my dictionary? 3) What's your favourite colour? Answer #1 anyway. PPs. Come on! Being a BIG GEEK, I hotfooted it down to my local megacorporate, soul- sucking dehydrated recordchainstore on Monday to get a copy. Not only did I buy the record, I bought it on two formats. It wasn't planned, though. Fossicking around the pitifully-small singles section, I discovered the 7" vinyl version first. Woo, thought I, 99 pence. Has to be a bargain. May as well get it if I can't find the CD. And then, I *did* find the CD, so (after many minutes of... THE PLAIN PEOPLE OF THE INTERNET WRITE: Get on with it! I will, I will, I promise. Partly, I was quite impressed that my local hyperdehydrated sterilised multinational THE PLAIN PEOPLE OF THE INTERNET WRITE: You did that bit! Oh yes. I did. I was quite impressed that they still sell vinyl 7" records, is what I was saying. I'm sure they didn't use to. I'm so old I remember when Woolworths stopped stocking 7" singles - in their big final sale I bought one by Ace Of Base and another by Four Non Blondes. Plain People of the Internet: was there supposed to be a point to this post? Because, you know, we could be downloading porn or something instead of reading this drivel. Yes. The new single. B&S go disco funk, apparently. I never like labelling things, because I always end up getting it wrong. Back when I worked in a library, I had a long argument with a cataloguer as to whether a particular book should be filed under PS ("American literature") or H-something ("Business administration"). It was a business administration textbook written in the form of a novel, you see. Not a very good novel. Worse than Mills and Boon, even. If you drive down the M6 (Toll)... Plain People Of The Internet: our hands are hovering over the delete button, you know... YOUR COVER ARTWORK'S BLOWN I don't care really about B&S trying to "broaden their musical style" ((C) Alexis Petridis, probably), because personally I like an entire 387 genres of music. Nothing more, and nothing less. What I do care about, though, is their cover art. Stu M's holiday snaps, mmm. Beanz wearing an arab strap - mmmmmm. Isobel's red leather jacket - actually, is it leather or PVC? I really don't know. We should be told, you know. Anyway, the point I'm slowly getting to is: what are all those books on the record sleeve? What does it tell us about the band? Here, push this button. Plain People Of The Internet: What, this button. Yes, that button. Let's take a closer look! STRANGE VIDEO ZOOMY EFFECT Now, who would live in a record sleeve like this? Let's look at the evidence. There's lots of books on the back, here; what do they tell us? "We Learned To Ski". We did, did we? "The Bedside Guardian 35" - clearly some leftwing socialist subversion going on. "War And Peace In The Sudan" - are there some interesting colonial exploits somewhere in the band's history? "Bound And Gagged" - clearly, the whole band are perverted kinky fetish perverts. Plain People Of The Internet: Like you, you mean? I'll have you know that that investigation was dropped, and I proved to the officers' satisfaction that those chains and padlocks in my bedside drawer were for entirely legitimate activities. So there. And don't let anyone tell you otherwise. KEATS AND CHAPMAN Watching Glastonbury on the telly fills me with longing. Not to go to a festival, god no, it would be an awful place filled with smelly hippies and annoying people. No, I want to be in a band. I want to play something wonderful in time with the rest of the band, turn round and smile at my bandmates because we're creating something great. I want to be on stage, and inspiring people to write shite like this on the interweb. I want to be in a band. I'm not planning to go down to my record shop for a few months now. The Aberfeldy album doesn't come out until September, sadly. If you're never heard of Aberfeldy, go and find something out about them. Although there is a new Hidden Cameras album due out before then. That could be tempting. Nobody has read this far, have they? The article referred to the song as a subtle story or a domestic tragedy. I've never been able to make heads or tails of the lyrics besides realizing that the song is gorgeous. Does anybody have a clue as to what kind of tragedy this mag was referring to? Obviously it's a sad song, but beyond that I couldn't figure anything out... I always thought it was inspired by Osamu Dazai's tragic novel "No Longer Human (Ningen Shikkaku)." Because the story in the song is very similar to parts of the book. At least, that's what I think when I hear the song. If anyone's curious, the book is about the protagonist's alienation from human society. He cannot connect with other people, and fears them. He has drug and alcohol problems, and cannot have normal relationships with women. The book is semi-autobiographical. The book was originally published in 1948, the same year Dazai committed suicide with his mistress in Tanagawa Canal (near Tokyo). +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister at missprint.org. It's odd, but I've never actually read that book, nor seen the movie. Out of all the 100s of books I've read, I never read that one. I don't know why. So, I just spoke from my own experience. Different people have different impressions, different interpretations, based on their own experiences and knowledge. Whatever happened to "the great thing about art is that I know more about it than you do; I'm right and you're wrong, and you also smell funny and are gay"? This is the Internet, you weirdo. I get enough tolerance and understanding at home. Slow Graffiti is about a bloke who's a prisoner in his own house, shacked up with some miserable junkie who's abusive and basically a complete mess, and keeps waking him up with the screaming heebie jeebies. He tries to look after her, because he feels responsible, despite the fact that it's killing him inside. So he sneaks off and spends his private time in the back room with pornography and phone sex, despite repeatedly attempting to swear off it, because deep down he knows it's no good. It keeps him in when what he really has to do is escape, though he knows he hasn’t got the balls to try. That's what I reckon. I feel like 'defrosting the fridge' ought to be some sort of euphemism, but if it is, it's too subtle for me. Oh, and A Picture of Dorian Grey seems like the best book ever for about the first third or so, and then degenerates into a tiresome bunch of old wank. Start it on a bus trip or something, and forget it on your seat before you hit the halfway point. You'll thank me. Some other things, just quickly: A Melbourne gig! Huzzah! Is anyone planning a picnic and/or get-together of some sort? The new song (Your Cover's Blown, I mean; I haven't heard the rest of the EP yet) is incredibly catchy, but I can't decide if I really like it or not. It's definitely a few minutes longer than it needs to be. The first few minutes. I don't like the funk thing, the speaky bits, or the part where it turns into "Paint It Black" in the middle, but I do quite like where it ends up, all the same. I think the problem with Belle and Sebastian is that Stuart thinks he's cool these days. I suppose I would too, if I was all hip and buff and spent most of my working hours standing in front of one of the best pop groups of all time. It doesn't really suit him, though - I liked him better when he was less sure of himself. Poor bugger. I want him to be happy and popular and successful and all that, and I lap up everything he puts out, and even attempt to foist it off onto others, but then it bugs me when he sounds like he's got too much of a strut in his step. I'm a horrible, selfish, tiny little man. The only cool one in the band is Stevie, really, but it seems like he's always known it, so he wears it quite well. Ah, what do I know? Actually, one thing I do know is that they've chosen completely the wrong support act for their Melbourne gig. Architecture in Helsinki are utterly tedious. Thankfully the seats are all numbered, so we don't have to stake out territory early on - I'll see you in the bar during their set. Bulk love, -Vanilla Flavoured David. Listen to the lyrics! THIS SONG IS ABOUT CONDOMS INNIT!! Slow Graffiti (Lyrics) There's a portrait In a back room, Which I keep for days upon, which I relent And gaze for hours on the muscle skin and bone of some Imaginary friend. (i.e. At the back of the condom packet, there is an erotic picture of two people making out. Gazing upon the muscle, er skin, and er..bone, turns adolescent stuart on, as he imagines making out 4reelz) So how about it? Show me please how I will look in twenty years And let me please, Interpret history in every line and scar that's painted There in front of me. (i.e. Looking at the pictures of the muscular copulating couple, sturan looks at his slightly wrinkly mini-sturan and wonders what it will look like in 20 years, whether it'd be more or less wrinkly than it is now) It doesn't matter what I'm thinking What I tell myself to do I'll end up calling. (i.e. now aroused, Sturan phones up 0891-HOT-CHIX) I stay in to defrost the fridge Now the kid has gone to bed A feeling of dread. (i.e. but the weather's too cold, and mini-sturan turns to ultra-mini-sturan...) At least when she's around the troubles there, It's worse to wake up with her falling round the room. (...and the live webcam website didn't help to wake up mini-struan) Listen Johnny; you're like a mother To the girl you've fallen for, And you're still falling. Listen Johnny; You're like a mother to the girl you've fallen for, And you're still falling, (i.e. Stuart admires the way condoms protect girls against the dirty rain, like the way a mother hen protects her chicks) And if they come tonight You'll roll up tight and take whatever's coming to you next. (self explanatory) Ken p.s. i actually posted this this morning before david hewitt but it didn't fucking get through, now it looks like i've just copied him! ah well! _________________________________________________________________ It's fast, it's easy and it's free. I, too have noticed this. I am saddened by it, although I think I appreciate some of the reasons for it. I don't think it has anything to do with Belle and Sebastian's records or gigs. They are as great as ever. I think it has more to do with the fact that the novelty of the internet has worn off. All the people who used to post to sinister are now getting calluses on their thumbs from repeatedly texting each other. One day soon, people will be complaining that no-one ever sends them text messages anymore, and that it's all been superseded by this new-fangled ESP messaging transmitted directly from brain to brain. I will be going to the Somerset House gig on the Sunday, so would very much like to know who else will be. We must arrange a meet-up. Possibly we can just copy the people who arrange the (possibly bigger) meet-up on the Saturday, or we could be original. I believe that some of the pubs in that area close in the evenings at weekends, as no-one much lives round there, so we must be careful. Anyway, I received a postcard a couple of days ago to say that the start time for both gigs has been brought forward from 8 until 7. It apologised for any inconvenience this may cause, which was nice. I shall be braving the worst that a tube strike can bring and heading off to the Freaky Trigger club nite tonight at the Chapel, Islington and then (what bad planning is this?) going back to London tomorrow for work related stuff. Before I leave Oxford tomorrow, I am going on a course at our other office (i.e., the one I don't work in) which is on the corner of a street called Marston Street. Are you familiar with the song "Escort Crash on Marston Street" by Heavenly? Well, it's the same Marston Street. Are there any songs about streets in your home town? If so, why don't you post about them? I'd like to know.... I have to admit to being a bit of a philistine - I am far more familiar with the song "Picture of Dorian Gray" by Television Personalities than I am with the book. I don't think "Slow Graffiti" was influenced by the song tho.
