From Suziegreenchick at xxx.com Mon Apr 4 14:00:04 2005 From: Suziegreenchick at xxx.com (Suziegreenchick at xxx.com) Date: Mon, 4 Apr 2005 09:00:04 EDT Subject: Sinister: Hello Message-ID: <1dc.3a2c5335.2f829454@aol.com> Hello everyone, I'm Suzie, just let out of nursery (which is slightly ironic as I run one and I'm 'let out' for end of term at the moment) I'm trying to keep calm and contain my excitment so I don't just splurge all over the page! I can't remember when I first heard B & S ( I think it might be High Fidelity related), but a few weeks before I joined this list I borrowed a cd from the library and I fell head over heels in love. I've been wanting to tell the world but no one seems to understand, comments include 'they don't do anything for me' and 'they're inoffensive', this being from my husband (I beat him, of course, and he now lives in the shed at the bottom of the garden) actually he likes 'Cuckoo' but then he is a Thin Lizzy fan! So I'm working on building my collection and feel happy to have found others. I played B & S for the first time in my car recently (she only comes out in fine weather) and it was, quite literally, poetry in motion. I have a few obsessions, mostly creative, and I find that Belle and Sebastian just fit. A friend wants to take me to Glasgow soon, I'm very excited, I've never even been to Scotland before (hmmm, I know, I know!) So.... that's about it - new girl, loves B & S, wants to share enthusiasm. I don't really know any of you but I've got the feeling that your taste is good so go on and tell me! I''ll arrive 4rh May late at night and I'm leaving 9th may early in the morning. I got one more question, is there anyone of you living in London who feels like spending the night 8th-9th May out? I was thinking that if I spend the last night on clubs, bars or cafés I can pay for onte night less on a Hostel. On the other hand I guess a night out can be even more epensive. Anyway my friend don't want to join me because she's going to school the next day. I think it's very nice that people have been writing in to introduce themselves on the list, and thought I'd join in! My name is Ken and I like Belle and Sebastian. I was really naughty when I was younger, which explains why I started downloading illegal MP3s, and during one of these acts of theft I found this "Get me away from here, I'm dying" song, which was when I had first heard this band. It was strange that I had downloaded that particular song, because I was actually feeling really chirpy that day. But by the end of the song I was making really camp hand gestures, and singing along "oooh get me away I'm diane, get me away I'm diane.. get me awayyy I'm dianneeeee" and fantasised about being the Princess of Wales, and wondered whenever did I form enough of an impression on Paul Anka for him to fall so madly in love with me. Nonetheless, over time I grew less gay, and had listened to more songs by B+S. I managed to download about 6 other songs from that "If You're Feeling Sinister" album, and listened to them a lot. Five months later I finally drove away the guy living at the next room at my university flat with my singing along. when he left it was during the Easter break and he may or may not have deliberately left the bin unemptied so that when I got back, the whole flat was filled with flies, and I had to kill all of them with my bare hands, plus a rolled up magazine. I had a kill count of 139 flies, and I had to stop listening to Mayfly for a few weeks. And then, a few months later I spent New Years Eve in London. It was a lot of fun but the next day there were no trains going back home, so I ended up stuck at my friend's brother's flat. With my friend in deep sleep until 4pm the following morning, I ended up listening to almost the whole back catalogue of B+S that his brother had in the CD rack. I listened to Tigermilk, and all the EPs. To this date I am still very fond of that day I spent alone with B+S. Then I went to see Belle and Sebastian live for the first time, the following summer, in Glasgow. Everything went right that Friday, I found out my University degree result that day, and it was perfect, and I met many people for the first time from this Sinister list, many of whom I still talk to a lot. And after finally getting my ticket, I got to see Belle and Sebastian, alive, in the flesh, out of the flesh, singing there on the stage. I immediately turned gay again and let out a little tear. Actually I cried my eyes out. Half of the tears were really just over a girl from University, so I guess it wasn't really all that gay, but you know. A few years later, a few more Belle and Sebastian gigs came and went, not much have happened since really, although I feel older, and less naive, sometimes. Also I played football with Stuart Murdoch once and I scored a goal past him!! Go me! That's all. Ken P.s. Barak Netzerel asked > Who sings on: > > Lazy Line Paint Jane (apart from Stuart..) > Chickfactor / Seymour Stein > Asleep On A Sunbeam / Beyond The Sunrise / Is It Wicked Not To Care? > > Is it Stevie & Sarah all around, or am I getting it completely wrong? Well, as far as I know, Stevie sings in Chickfactor, and Seymour Stein. Sarah sings in Asleep On A Sunbeam. And I think they wrote those songs themselves. A former member called Isobel Campbell sings in "Is It Wicked Not To Care", she was also the mastermind behind the superb "Beyond The Sunrise" which took experimental music to another, more mystrious, level. (Stevie was the voice of that guy who was just about to have a wank in that song) The female parts of Lazy Line Painter Jane was sung by the lovely Monica Queen, who was in a band called Thrum. She punches a lot on stage, I like her. Hope this helps! ********************************************************************** This email is confidential and intended solely for the person or entity to whom it is addressed. I've found this cool little website that all serious music geeks should have a go at, here is the link http://www.scenta.co.uk/gamescenta/site/whatsthatsong.cfm This should work? Well anyway, you write a band name in, then they play a song and you have 30 seconds to work out what it is from a list of about 4. the B&S one is dead easy (obviously) but others are a lot more difficult, try it, it's proper geeky fun. Unfortunatly there are no prizes. So please spread the word and tell your fellow sinister lot about it. If anyone cares about what i'm up to, i've got my own business called SCRIBBLE where i print and sell very cool t-shirts and badges. You can still see me at HDIF ( i should be going on friday actually). I have also been rubbing shoulders with the likes of Plan B, a mag that you all must have heard of and am enjoying Tom Artrockers rantings about NME. Belle was gone. He couldn’t remember exactly what had happened and he was quite confounded by the whole matter. 1995 seemed a long ways back now. Maybe he was just getting old and sentimental? He had left his hometown for studies at the University, if you can believe that. This city made him feel like a lost ten-year-old. But that wasn’t all bad, was it? Come to think of it, there ought to be an Isabelle in every city. His troubled face had brightened up at that thought. You might say he’d had a vision. He could picture her walking down any street in town – particularly in the suburbs. Because that was where she would live. The rebel daughter of some upper middle-class family. She would walk down the street with her head held high and a spring in her step, pretending she didn’t feel the burn of all those glaring eyes, disapprovingly peering out from behind the safety of their triple-layer windows. Sebastian felt sorry for her. So he started walking the streets (for some reason the buses around here didn’t get along with him) putting up posters in inventive places. On an old out-of-use bus stop where people could be alone with their brooding thoughts: “Have you seen Isabelle? If you have, or if you ARE her, please let me know.” He was going to sign each one with places you might find him. The old bus stop for instance. But it was freezing outside, so the bulk of them ended up with just a scribbled ‘Sebastian’. If you didn’t recognize his handwriting, it’d take a scientist to make it out. A couple of days later, when his hands were properly thawed out, he got himself a pair of mittens. With renewed vigour, he went about putting up enquires about his old dog on wheels. Because he had had to give up the fox when he moved. Now he had no one. There may be much to say for the warmth of mittens, but people they are not. But help would come from an unexpected direction. Sebastian was studying musicology. You know, Stravinsky, the old chap Beethoven, and the like. It was the only subject he thought he good bear. At least they were all odd personages (artists that is), like him, so he wouldn’t feel too out of place in their company. Or that was what he figured anyways. Now, also studying musicology was Lisa. Funny thing is, Sebastian couldn’t remember having met her. Which he ought to have, seeing as he had written songs about her. One was called “Lisa and Chelsea”. Lisa reminded Sebastian of Belle, and he would sometimes confuse their names. Lisa tried to correct him. She even kicked his shin once, but it didn’t do any good. So eventually, she gave in. Sebastian had found Isabelle, you might say. Isabelle and Sebastian talked a lot. When people scowled at them during lectures they would write notes instead. She taught him about bands, he taught her about foxes and squirrels. Sebastian had written a song about Isabelle, called “Schoolgirl Action”. She was not to know this however. Sebastian had never known much about girls. But then again, Isabelle never was like other girls. That much Sebastian had learned. xx Sebastian ps. hopefully making up for my abusive post yesterday. pps. I wrote this last year but finally decided to post it as my fanzine plans seem to be going nowhere (but the bin possibly). the ending almost makes me cry now, because in real life it turned it out just so much worse. I suppose there'll have to be a sequel, setting things write. ppps. she won't be reading this, right? -- _______________________________________________ Check out the latest SMS services @ http://www.linuxmail.org This allows you to send and receive SMS through your mailbox. In fact I quite like it. I was born in the lake’s land, which is not the lake’s district, although they have a thing in common, I used to commute there by train. First time I have ever hear of B&S I think it was from a late radio show on the national Italian broadcasting and they play, I believe, sleep the clock around, which I founded quite entertaining, but, for how I am shaped, listening to a single song from the radio is not my way to fall in love with a band. But it didn’t took long as few days I read an article on a magazine putting forward the rather common (now) comparison between B&S and Nick Drake, that I adore. When my turn table finally died, or o put it straight, when my hobby for do-it-yourself electronic led to my parent turntable to fall into bits, I was so addicted I couldn’t live without a copy of pink moon so I run down to the train station to get to only decent record shop in the nearby town: that’s what you do when you live in the countryside and you don’t own a car: wait for public transport. Looking through the shop vinyl collection, almost in tears (a common treat) for the loss of the old pal turntable, I saw a (CD) copy of if your feeling sinister on the upper shelves and thought I could brake my bank account and bring even a couple of records over, rather than one and it was like smoking your second cigarette, the first never taste right, I got soon addicted . At the time I didn’t even know what internet was, not to mention a mailing list, however, I still think that join this particular one is one of the best thing I’ve ever done in my life. That might imply I haven’t done much after all but that’s a different story For example I would have never had the chance to admire the bowling genius of Mr. Ken Chu, otherwise. That’s more of a good enough reason to be proud right deriving whatever anzikamina anzikama’ Take care Love stefano +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister at missprint.org. I certainly wasnt there at the start and only heard songs like legal man and 3,6,9 etc when ex boy was about to leave. rifling through his extensive b&s collection at the last minute, I got so hooked on the early eps, that doing evil things like swopping the contents of (my) kings of convenience remix sleeve with (his) dog on wheels seemed ok.... . lordy. fingers crossed he's not tried to get them out in a while, but the early stuff really is that unfeasibly good. anyhow, welcome to all the lovely new members out there. I'm a lurker, and probably won't show my face again for another two years, and rightly so, but if there are any uk mancunian sinisterings out there, give me a shout, and just cos today was such a brilliantly lovely day here, a picnic would make sense. (today that is, now, I can promise nothing when it starts pissing all my parade once again in the morning.) plus, I'm really sorry cos this is kind of tenuous, but I'm going to vancouver for a week 18 - 25 th may, and am looking for anyone who lives there who a. might like b&s too. b. might know if there are any exciting bands playing that week. c. might like to meet me for coffee. ruthx +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister at missprint.org.
