Stuart may, or may not (and I suspect the latter) be aware that cloaks are *everywhere* in the shops this season (yes, even in Hong Kong where it could hardly be described as cloak weather even now). I have spent about half an hour trying to find a way to word this well or good or whatever but i really can't find one so i guess this is it: Some of you may remember amyk*ns/amy l*ngcore. She was also on this list a time ago. She passed away on november 2nd. She died of coronary arterial atherosclerosis which as far as i know and have been told is where the arteries clog and harden, usually in a situation like this theillness leads on to a heart attack or some form of heart failure but with amy it was apparently just the atherosclerosis itself that killed her. Just four or five days before she passed she had really bad chest pains and went to the emergency room, they gave her an ekg, it showed that her heart was fine and they told her it must be acid reflux and sent her home. It obviously wasn't. I have been informed if they had done something called an echo-cardiogram they could have spotted the blockage in her arteries and perhaps could have performed surgery to fix it. That never happened but i have no idea how routine a test it is. Basically i don't know if the hospital was negligent and if this could or should have been prevented and i don't know if my hatred and anger towards them is justified or just because i need to be angry at something. Amy was my partner/fiancee and november the 2nd was exactly one year after i returned from spending the best 3 months of my life with her. A lot of her family and close friends from home believe in god, i am not one of them but if he does exist i really hate his sense of humour. We were getting married early spring of next year and she was moving from the united states so we could live together. I know no-one else knew amy in the same way i did, as far as i know very few people met her in person but i think the people who read her posts and chatted with her on #sinister liked her a great deal. I really don't know what to say about her except she was the most beautiful person i have ever met in every way possible. I wanted to write more about her and how wonderful a person she is but i just can't find words right now. I'm sure anyone who remembers her won't need me to tell them anyway. I am trying to put together a website archive of photo's of her. It might take quite a while because sometimes going through all the photo's is too painful to bear. It will happen at some point soon though. If anyone would like to see these just send me an e-mail and i will send you the website address as soon as it is completed. I peek in a bit every once and a while, and I read Danny's post on the web archives and it was like getting punched in the gut. I'm afraid I didn't know Amy that well, but she was one of the Michigan Sinister people and one day back at the beginning of November I met Amy and her brother at a Quasi/Stereolab show in Detroit and had a fantastic time chatting with the two of them. They followed me to a diner on the way back to my home between Detroit and Grand Rapids and we stayed out a bit and had some food and laughed and had a generally great time. She later posted about it and said nice things about me. She was a charming young lady and her, her brother, and I had a great time laughing at each other and chatting for a time. We kept in touch with a few emails here and there and she always wanted to make it to one of the Great Lakes picnics we had. Then life got in the way and I left the list and lost track of her and here it is years later and Elise asks me if I've read the list lately and did I know an Amy. I can't even begin to imagine what Danny and her family are feeling now and I wouldn't begin to think that any words I had might make things easier on anyone, but Danny mentioned that he hadn't thought many people had met her and I just wanted to say that I had the pleasure and it was a lovely time and she was a lovely young lady with intelligence and energy and it's a poorer world without her. I'm glancing at other windows as I write this. One has Danny's post and the other has a post from Amy from the 4th of November, 2001 and she mentioned the concert and the diner and myself in passing and it makes me smile to think of it and to see her writing where she calls me Mr. Punk Rawk. I've been thinking of that concert and all the laughs I had with her brother and her all day, and I just wanted to say something, to tip my hat to the memory of a wonderful person. I wish I had more to say. I wish I had known her better so I could have something to say. I just wanted to say that once upon a time I had the pleasure of meeting two great people at a concert thanks to the sinister list and years later it breaks my heart to think that one of those lovely people have passed on. Like Danny I don't believe in any type of god, so I don't have any prayers for her, but I have memories and my thoughts are with Danny and Amy's family. Take care, Danny. To all the old sinster kids, cheers, and bless the lot of you. I don't know what to say without making it sound like an elegy, but, as with Liz, I just feel such an urge to call out to them that they'll not be forgotten. Like Danny and James, I've long ago dropped my fierce teenage clinging to religious belief as a way through, and am still to come to terms with a world where people disappearing makes any sense. Yet, as with everyone who dies, it feels like such a cruel thing to use the past tense and I always pull back from it, as if it's bad grammar or just nonsensical. I still talk and think of my mum in the present, and she was gone before Sinister was even born. I wish she'd been here to meet you all (she'd have loved everything about this list), and I'm sure she'd have mailed you all more frequently than me. Maybe my intuition's trying to tell me something: regardless, there's a candle lit today by my bed, it smells sweet and gentle and it's for you, Amy. Cardamon and orange, if you need to know. Danny, I can tell already from our mails and hearing from your elsewhere that you're strong enough to get through this: or not through, but with this. To all those who knew and loved Amy much better than me, love love. So, apparently, the new album is gonna be made all the way in LA, and involves writing in a circle with everyone in the band. I am secretly hoping that this was like a Tandem Writing kind of thing, or like the drinking game in which, in a circle in turn you have to add a word to the end of a sentence and then repeat it, and keep it making sense. I once played this game with some friends and we realised that as long as we keep adding adjectives to the end the game will never end. My ideal lyrics to "Crazy Little Frog" -------------------------------------- I saw a big white crazy cute mental automatic pneumatic demented cyclic psychotic insane loony harebrained nutty potty trained Frog Who was absurd and foolish and mentally deficient and likes nutty cheese with the wacky brain smelling like a Frog. Frog, frog, frog, here it comes Frog, frog, frog, here it comes And repeat. Honestly though. Am I the only one who is quite happy for the band now that they're hitting Proper big time? With LA studios and biography and a comic!! Plus filming for the BBC with colour coordinated fans! Also: The other day, I found "Wrapped up in books" "I'm a cuckoo" and "Step into my office, baby" at a video juke box inside an "It's A Scream!" pub, I sat down, and listened to some B+S while I polished off an orange crush Sourz Towers. It was good times. Things I would like to see next. 1) Chix-factor - a nationwide talent search with the winner becoming a new member of B+S. 2) Belle and Sebastian the TV series (but not as in LE belle et sebastien TV series with that dog thing) 3) Goalkeeper's revenge - a 'celebrity' 5-a-side football game for the PS2, featuring teams such as B+S, Mogwai, sigur ros. Plus unlockable hidden teams Slot Jockey and NME Reference: http://www.nodata.org/honey/sinister/mhonarc/200004/msg00136.html (notice email subject line!) ----------------------- More seriously now. Just want to send my condolences to Danny and all who knew Amy, I only knew her through the chatroom and also a brief encounter in Chicago before the B+S show and I already know from there now wonderful a person she was. I still remember the nice pressie I once got, and the transatlantic mixtape challenge. xxx Ken ********************************************************************** This email is confidential and intended solely for the person or entity to whom it is addressed. The time for teasing is over. The "surprise" album, alluded to in our previous mail, is "If You're Feeling Sinister: Live At The Barbican". This download-only album, which pisses all over any bit torrents you may have heard, will be available exclusively from iTunes on December 6th. As a further incentive to follow the path of righteousness, all proceeds will be donated to the DEC's Asia Quake Appeal. We are fairly sure it's going to be available in all the International iTunes shops from the above date, BUT it's not absolutely certain, and it's kind of outwith our control, so no promises in that department. Bear with us though, because it will happen, and it's worth it, as anyone who was at the show could testify. You can download iTunes from http://www.apple.com/itunes/ Enjoy! That reminds me, I still haven't got that downloadable track that I *paid for* out of my *pocket money* off the Save The Whale album or whatever it was. The one about a kebab shop. I think the Another Late Night album was more of a surprise really. I had a quick aural shufty at the B&S track and it sounded warm and sophisticated, multi-layered and exqusitely textured. If posting to sinister were some kind of profession that one has a manager for, my sinister manager would be complaining right now about my suffocating posting schedule. But as it is, there are song title puns to be made, and there are soon to be more, from the exciting new album! I'm filling myself up to the ears with anticipation right now, and especially now, that I hear there will be a song called 'Mornington Crescent'. Which I presume is either a reference to the place between Camden Town and Euston, or a reference to that game that references said place. Would it just be a recording of Stuart playing 'Mornington Crescent', with some jaunty guitar in the background? Who would win? And by what rule would victory have been achieved? ---------- Sod it, I'm going to try and guess the whole lot. Act Of The Apostle Part 1 - Something about how this man once forgot his own song lyrics 3 times, until some cock from the crowd shouts it out to remind him Another Sunny Day - Global Warming White Collar Boy - A boy in a juvenile detention centre who got gang raped by fellow inmates, and then given the pearl necklace The Blues Are Still Blue - How Chelsea Football Club hasn't really changed despite the influx of cash from Roman Abramovich Dress Up In You - Transvestism, and/or the fur trade. Sukie In The Graveyard - Taking his beloved Suzuki Vitara to the pound after it failed the MOT. We Are The Sleepyheads - Date rape Song For Sunshine - Ozone layer Funny Little Frog - Result of a drinking game (see previous post) To Be Myself Completely - Parody of Radiohead. Lyrics: That there, that is me. I am here, this is happening. *wailing* Act Of The Apostle Part 2 - About how this dude sold a Belle and Sebastian ticket on ebay, for £30. And then the computer hanged itself. For The Price Of A Cup Of A Tea - Oh I don't know. Isobel? Mornington Crescent - Recording of Sturan playing Mornington Crescent Are you excited? Message-ID: Ihhh, my shelf is crowded with records. Soon I'll have to buy a new one. I've been shopping online, every record I've been wanting to check out since I was about fifteen, and some new ones I found to. Actually there's so much good music out there that I'm getting all dizzy when I think about it, and have to sit down in my armchair and write a few poems and eat some icecream to calm myself down. I think it's a good thing that my newly bought computer is in a city far away so that I can not use it regularly. If I did I would spend all the money I've saved and end up on the street with a big big collection of records which I would have to drag after me in a big big sack, and they would get broken and I would get thin an sick. All in all it would be bad. I've also bought a vacuum cleaner online. It really sucks to pay money for such a boring thing, but I guess it's part of growing up, at least in this twisted world. Hrm...maybe my problems aren't that big. I've probably never end up on the street, unless I start doing drugs and I don't think I'll need that. I'll stick to coffee. It actually gives me psycadelic perception and a strong feeling of hapiness. I guess I'm lucky, coffee is not too dangerous. I've got one more problem, though it's not the biggest problem in the world. I bought a record called Help! A Day in the Life and thought that the Kebabsong that's been discussed recently, would be on it. There was a lot of other great songs so it was a good mistake I made, but I still want the Kebabsong. If someone could help me out I would really be pleased. In my town the grass and the trees and the roof and everything else is covered with a pale glittering frost. I feel like I'm part of a fairytale and I'm quite fascinated by the fact that I'm not, that it's actually reality this place were I'm walking around. Bear with us though, because it will happen, and it's > worth it, as anyone who was at the show could testify. ... it's worth mentioning, for the record, that even if the download-only "Sinister live" thing is available at various internation iTunes music stores, there are still a hell of a lot of countries whicu don't actually have an iTunes music store. Like, for example, New Zealand. (And, OK, I'nly thinking of myself here, but I'm sure the indie kids in Iceland are probably equally pissed ...) I've been stung before by this sort of thing, from other bands I love a lot less than B&S. But now I'm kinda miffed and annoyed. And it's not like I can even give someone else the money and they can download the songs for me, because iTunes wraps Digital Rights Management software around the files, to lock them to the specific computer they were bought from. I guess the other, more fundamental issue is, even when the opportunity presents itself, I really hate paying for digial music. There's something so nice about the physical oblect of a record or a CD, and scrolling to an MP3 in iTunes has none of those exciting tactile thrills. You know the excitement of going to the record store, and then tearingopen the shrinkwrap on the bus home, poring over the booklet, reading the lyrics and the credits? It's all gone ... OK, so this is basically a big whinge, and I'm sorry. But I feel annoued that, as someone whose been a massive fan of B&S for something like nine years, my country of choice now prevents me from even buying the bands' new album. It's bad enough knowing they'll never ever play a shpw here, but I'd always assumed I'd at least be able to buy every one of their albums. In positive news, Vanessa and I celebrated our fourth wedding anniversary a couple of days ago. I can't remember if I ever posted this to the list, but when I was sendoing out invites, I took a punt and sent one, along with a wee note, to Stuart Murdoch. About 10 days larer I got a lovely hanfwritten note back, saying he couldn't make it, but wishing us well for the day. That gesture meant so much to me, and the letter still sits neatly tucked in the sleeve of my "The Boy With The Arab Strap" LP. Anyway, hope all's well in sisist*r-land Lawrence x +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister at missprint.org. I was lucky enough to cavort around to the discs spun by Stuart Murdoch at How Does it Feel in London last year. It was really nice to interact in a "normal" way with someone who has always been an inspiration. He even reacted with gentle good humour when I asked him in a comedy fashion about some lyrics I had misinterpreted for years (I now realise it is "Old Compton" a street in London mentioned in the Boy with the Arab Strap and not "Contin" a little known village in Scotland. Hey-ho ) Anyway, I digress members of Belle & Sebastian will be DJ-ing on Friday 25th November @ 9pm, the Mint Lounge, Manchester. There is also a B&S night @ Smile, the Star & Garter, Manchester on Saturday 26th November for all those fortunate enough to reside in Lancashire. Mr Murdoch was also kind enough to listen to my shamelessly B&S inspired music released under the moniker of the Jim Muir Slideshow. The Guardian gave us single of the week and said it "Comes from that great Cocker/Weller/Morrissey tradition of kitchen sink dramas set to fantastic tunes." You can listen and download the EP for free at the following link   http://www.myspace.com/jimmuirslideshow   I'd be delighted to know people's thoughts on my blatant plagiary! Please mail me your learned thoughts off the list. It is almost impossible to find B & S gigposters, as it seems in the UK they are not as popular or profitable for the artists (see gigposters.com if you are curious) and in the U.S. they play often in festivals so the posters are not just B & S posters, but posters for the entire festival itself(like Coachella). My fiance makes gigposters freelance and while I wish I could say he had done the lovely Belle and Sebastian one currently available- it is not so. The artist name is Michael Michael Motorcycle. His work is all self done, start to finish (including the screenprinting, etc. This was a rather limited run of posters (several hundred) and if you go to his website you will see how lovely his work is. We had the good fortune to be located across the row from him and his beautiful wife and faithful dog this summer at Flatstock/Bumbershoot in Seattle and they are some of the nicest and most talented people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. We have even asked them to do our wedding announcements (if we ever figure out when we are actually going to do this marriage thing). Anyway...I am running on. Right now the prints are I think 100 dollars US, the price will go up when he gets to the posters numbered 100 and below. I am not sure how many of you would be interested but I was when I found out in August he was going to do a poster for them and have been waiting ever since... his url is: http://www.michaelmichaelmotorcycle.com/ Yours, Rachel E. -- "A person is never happy except at the price of some ignorance." --Anatole France (1844 - 1924) +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister at missprint.org. I heard Stuart interviewed and he seemed surprised that this story was picked up now, as the advert has been running for years, but here it is.. Article in the Herald last Monday (courtesy of Google cache).. " The few seconds of music that proved a œ500,000 earner MARTIN WILLIAMS November 22 2005 THEY don't have a record deal and give away their music free through Their website. But Looper, a little-known Scottish band, have earned about £500,000 in royalties after one of their instrumentals was adopted as the signature tune for Xerox, the largest document management company in the world. Mondo 77 is heard each day by millions of Americans on national television, although the vast majority will have no idea that the band, which formed through Glasgow School of Art, is responsible for it. While pop tracks are often used to sell everything from iPods to cars, they usually have a short shelf life. However, Looper's simple electronic tune has become a permanent fixture in the US, having been a staple on every Xerox advert since it was discovered by company executives three years ago. The track, which was first released five years ago on the band's album Geometrid, has also previously cropped up on the films Vanilla Sky and The Edukators. The Glasgow-based band was formed by Stuart David, a founding member of Belle and Sebastian, and his wife, Karn. Mondo 77 was chosen for use in the commercials by Adam Leibovitz, who edited the initial adverts for Xerox. "The song's simplicity, energy, modern style and sense of humour made it an important element that worked well with the communications objective of the commercials," said a spokeswoman for the firm. Their UK record company Jeepster closed four years ago, and Looper recorded their last album, The Snare, the following year. It was the first of a proposed five-LP deal with the Mute record label, also home to Depeche Mode, Erasure and Goldfrapp, but the band subsequently left Mute. "We don't sell any records any more," said David. "I am pleased that Looper didn't take off in a big way it's not good for you in the long run, I don't think. "I can only think of two or three fans we've ever heard from off the back of the Xerox ad. I think people who hear it on the ad have less opportunity to find out what it is. "It [Mondo 77] brings in enough money for us to have been able to treat It as being our job." The band is working on an album which they hope will be available as a download only. David formed Belle and Sebastian with Stuart Murdoch in an all-night cafe in Glasgow in 1996, after meeting while on a youth opportunity scheme learning to be music engineers. Looper formed the following year for a show at the Glasgow School of Art, initially as a side project of Belle and Sebastian, with which David was the bass player. He played samplers, sang and told stories, while his wife projected her films and presented kinetic sculptures.
