I've only heard a few of the songs, but they sound good to me. Sukie in the Graveyard is my favourite of the ones I've heard. It's everything that's good about the modern Murdoch sound! I'm not too sure about the lyrics, but I'll try my best. I know you won't be able to hear it for a while, but maybe you can sing it as you float high seeking those tropical winds. Although you're so small, You're very well read, Touching the names and the dates of the dead. Leaving your trail, To glisten in the sun, A snail in the graveyard, you couldn't have more fun. *Instrumental - Stevie "Adverb" Jackson tugs his todger, accompanied by the sound of an asthmatic sparrow chirruping in a paper bag* You curl up in my slipper, Hiding in your shell, You may be warm but it ain't so swell, For me. If I want, To warm up my toes, I'll have to take you home to the mossy headstones. *Long and absurd outro on an organ pumped by a big bottomed nun* Isn't it great?! Did you get much for Christmas? It was sort of quiet in Stout Heights. I only got one card: a dainty letter from Oscar Wilde, scented like a pink hampster and full of the most silly words. I think he makes half of them up just to sound clever. The girls came round and pulled the cats' tails. Wendy asked me "why did the skeleton cross the road?", and I, playing the funny uncle, said "to buy some more bones?". "Yes", she said. "Are you sure?" "Yes!" And that was that! I think she needs to brush up on her joke-telling skills! My sister bought me a letter-writing set, so I can write to you more often. I promise to do it more than I have. The pigeon's name is Trevor, by the way. He knows his way home well enough. Just feed him an acorn and send him on his way. Robin x PS: I've hidden something special under the postage stamp, so peel it back carefully if you don't mind being SPOILED! Where is it? At the bottom of the letter of course, just keep on going... *small spoiler ahead* Although it's a few weeks until the new album arrives, the lyrics to the songs have already been put on the belle and sebastian website. When your balloon finally lands, try looking at www.belleandsebastian.com I'd post the full address but there simply isn't room under this stamp... +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister at missprint.org. We are going to be joined on amost all these dates by very special guests The New Pornographers. One exception is Vancouver. I can't remember why. The other exception is Austin, where we will be joined by Mogwai, Cat Power and Pretty Girls Make Graves. In fact, it's not really our show as such, it's a Matador SXSW show, and unfortunately that means very few of you are going to get in, as the vast majority of places are taken by SXSW pass holders. Sorry about that. There will be some tickets made available in a couple of weeks apparently, but for the moment there's nothing. You'll notice that not all the ticket information there is quite complete. Keep checking back and it'll appear soon enough. Also, if I may save you the time and bother it'll take to write in and complain about booking fees. We know! But we can't do anything about it! Almost all the venues have exclusive deals with the big ticket agencies, so either we just swallow it or we play places so small that a) we don't fit and b) only 150 people get in. At least this way you get the choice of whether to buy a ticket or not. Clearly it's not the cheapest ticket on the market either, but it costs what it costs and I think the addition of The New Pornographers makes it pretty decent value for money. Rest assured that nobody is laughing all the way to the bank. Except the ticket agencies... Anyway, the dates in full are below. Check www.belleandsebastian.com for details of where to get tickets. Much love, Honey (*) in the sense that it's not really. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Belle and Sebastian Subject: Belle & Sebastian News Message - Funny Little Frog kind of released tomorrow The new B&S single, "Funny Little Frog", is kind of released on January 10th. That is to say, the lead track is available from iTunes' store in the UK and very probably Europe too. Of course, the physical versions aren't released until next Monday, January 16th. The formats have already been announced, but there is one thing we forgot, which is the live version of "Funny Little Frog", recorded at last night's XFM show at the G2 in Glasgow. It's going to be available as a download only from this site, unencumbered by DRM (I think, although now I'm regretting typing that in case I've made a mistake). All being well, it should be available either on the 16th or 17th. Tony Doogan stayed up all night to mix it. Don't let it have been in vain. Back to those formats again. In case you need reminding, you can buy all three formats for 5 quid from here. I suggest you do so forthwith. Finally, if you're so inclined, please follow this link, just over here, and vote for the "Funny Little Frog" video in the NME chart. Go on. We go to all the trouble of making the things... they may as well get shown from time to time. ps Contrary to previous reports, The New Pornographers WILL be playing at the Austin show, and Pretty Girls Make Graves won't. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister at missprint.org. It's been a four month long process filled with discouraging failures. I don't think anyone can understand how happy it makes me feel that I've finally succeed. I think maybe it was worth the wait, cuz the relief now is so great. Today I'm going to add the curtains, which are, of course, more important than the curtain rods, but not the least as tricky to put in place, althought it's neccesary to get the curtain rods properly in place first, which I've done now. Until this day I've had a blanket covering my window, attached to the wall with drawing pins, so that pulling the it to the side have been impossible. The thing is my apartment is on ground level so living without any kind of curtain is not an option. The only thing my neighbours have seen of my apartment is my Star Wars box, which is placed in the window frame, in front of that blanket that is never pulled aside. I can imagine what kind of picture they have of me. Lately I've also been buying a lot of records (again). I think it's almost scaring how music can make me feel quite good and actually bring some meaning to life, as can poetry and art. I guess what scares me is that I might not appreciate real life as much as made-up stories and music. But then I think fantasy is necesarily a part of real life and vice verce and maybe I'm not fleeing at all. And I've got another thing to say: I love my job. Maybe bacause it's only five hours every second week, but I thought I'd still consider it a disaster. I've found out that I actually like running stairs up and down, and bycykling around, giving people their local newspaper. The paper itself happens to be crap, heavily sponsored by local companies. Most of the articles are about how the customers of some company in town are totaly ovejoyed about the good service and high-quality products. Despite of this, people seem to like recieving the paper, but I don't think that is the most important reason of why I' m loving my job. Maybe it's the running whilst listening to music in my sheep headphones which adds crackling sound to every song, and how I'm dead tired when I'm finished. I feel like I'm a hard working girl. I guess it's the perfect complement to my mainocuaption, poetrywriting and abstract thinking. I recorded Crazy Little Frog from the radio some weeks ago, but I could only listen to it one single time, then the recorder ate the tape up. Since I've only heard the song once I can't really decide wether that was a compliment or a diss. But let's hope it was a good omen. The new record will be swell and we will all be very very happy. It feels like it was morning, but in Glasgow that means afternoon. I was talking to Cookie and RJG about the history of Scottish pop. Who were the best, the top 10, the forgotten favourites? We named many names - JAMC, Altered Images, Rod Stewart, the Commotions. I was reminded of that day, that hour, a little, when I read, just now, on paper, this review. -- Belle And Sebastian, ABC, Glasgow The wonderful wizards of odd By David Pollock Published: 17 January 2006 Almost exactly a year ago, a phone poll conducted by the Scottish entertainments magazine The List established that Scotland's favourite band ever was Belle and Sebastian. This tells us one of two things: either that, in the face of stiff competition from Simple Minds, the Bay City Rollers, Primal Scream and Franz Ferdinand, the national consensus is that the Belles are on a pedestal of admiration all of their own, or, perhaps more cynically (but certainly more credibly), they simply possess a fanbase whose kamikaze commitment to the cause outweighs all others. In much the same way as The Smiths before them (even though the two bands are largely incomparable, musically), Belle and Sebastian draw a crowd of fans who are bookish and polite, and who measure their general ordinariness against a healthy sense of mild disaffection. In Glasgow, and particularly in the studenty nexus of Byres Road and Great Western Road, for example, these acolytes may be identified by their devotion to the retro style of bandleader Stuart Murdoch and his long-departed cellist and muse, Isobel Campbell. Thick-rimmed glasses, hand-knitted scarves and well-thumbed second-hand copies of novels mentioned by Murdoch on his online blog are vital ingredients of this West End coffee-shop look. It's a fact that Murdoch must recognise only too well. Towards the end of this show, he asked for the house lights to be put on, only to remark that the reflection from so many pairs of spectacles was dazzling him. Could all the boys kneel down out of sight, he wondered, to afford him a nicer view? Not wishing to offend, of course, they consented. There's something about watching a Belle and Sebastian gig that feels like being let in on a big in-joke. So non-exclusive are the band that anyone may join in, yet the fact that most people just don't get the gag is conversely what keeps only those of a certain sensitive, leftfield taste interested. Still, that amounts to a lot of people: this was the first of three fully subscribed nights in this large venue. There was a little something for everyone involved, but Murdoch, his co- vocalist and guitarist, Stevie Jackson, and the coterie of musicians, sometime backing vocalists and occasional string-section players who form the rest of the band (seven full-time members, five part-time players) were largely preaching to the converted. In their six-album history (seven, if you count the soundtrack to Todd Solondz's film Storytelling), they have had many stand-out songs, yet to focus on more obscure album tracks and unheard songs from the forthcoming album, The Life Pursuit, didn't invite new ears to listen. Still, many of these new songs were the more memorable, like the tight stomp of "White Collar Boy" or the winsome "Sukie in the Graveyard" , about a student who was so poor that she had to stay in the attic of the nearby School of Art. Despite the customary lack of volume in their live sound (a good or a bad thing, depending on the track), the between-song asides from the softly- spoken Murdoch and the more laddish Jackson reveal them to be as amusingly odd a couple as ever. Informing us that we could download The Life Pursuit to help us sing along, Murdoch produces a vinyl copy of the record to check the lyrics, while Jackson half-sings, half-mutters his own version of "I Belong tae Glasgae" to fill the dead air. Indeed, the pair's dancing to the wonderful "Electronic Renaissance" was an uncategorisable highlight. The airing of the more well-known "I'm a Cuckoo" and "The Wrong Girl" may be interpreted as sops to the less hardcore fans. But a single encore of "Judy and the Dream of Horses", which saw Murdoch invite a fan to sing onstage only to find himself upstaged by a word-perfect rendition, rather poignantly summed up how much more this band mean to anyone who's actively devoted to them. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I'm trying to track down a copy of the officially-released live version of "If You're Feeling Sinist*r" which is for sale on iTunes. I live in a country where the iTunes music store in unavailable, so I'm unable to legitimately purchase said album. (And don't even get me started on how this pisses me off - for heaven's sake _ I would GLADLY pay for the damn thing if Rough Trade, or B&S or whoever, had actually thought through the distribution a little more carefully and not put the files up in a proprietry format available to a handful of countries ... jeeze ...) It's bad enough knowing your favourite band will never come to your country to play live, but to not even be able to download a live album because of where you live is ridiculous. OK, rant over ... Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone who does have the good luck to live in a country where the iTunes music store is available would be at all persuaded to re-encode the tracks as good old fashioned MP3s and upload them somewhere, or else put them onto a CD and post them to New Zealand.* Hope life is treating you well, wherever you are ... Toodle pip! Lawrence * I should point out that, as a rule, I'm totally against this kind of piracy. I have literally thousands of CDs, and have purchased every single other officially released B&S thing to date. Lawrence's geographical dilemma noted, we need to resolve such requests with the almost biblical list rule not to trade copyrighted material via the list: we could debate the ethics of free music trade for aeons (don't! I do it enough in my head) but the issue is legality, which often doesn't correspond directly with morality, and just might threaten the continued existence of the list if handled wrongly. I'm not a lawyer, so my suggestion here is if you're going to request content that's pay-for in at least one country, then a commitment to give the equivalent amount of money that you would have had to pay to the band, record company (although I expect they have no mechanism) or somewhere worthy would be a good one, and one I bet the band would be happy with at least. It would show good intent. If you're stuck for a good charity, I can make a suggestion for a particularly B&S themed one: http://www.meresearch.org.uk Also quite selfish, because, if you help them find a cure by contributing, it'll make me well enough to fix the archives. And on that theme, here's an interview/article about the band from The Times last week, including his rough time with ME (the disease, not me): http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,14932-1982088,00.html Excerpt: Murdoch talks about when he fell victim to ME in his early twenties, when he abandoned his degree at Glasgow university and lived with his friend Michael. "He was also part of the city's ME hardcore," he smiles. "It was here that we turned into characters from Last of the Summer Wine, reflecting wistfully on our better years!" ... It's as though the energy denied Murdoch in his ME years is now the creative fuel that runs his life in Belle and Sebastian. Contrasting here and now with there and then, he likens himself to Prince Caspian in C.S.Lewis's "The Silver Chair". "He's strapped to this chair for years. Eventually, when he breaks the enchantment, he's rescued. It's not as though there aren't bleak times ahead - but from then on, everything to him is a game. Because he escaped the chair." Kind of a pity actually, as I'm just re-reading the Narnia books to see whether C.S.Lewis was actually a sexist pig as alleged or a good storyteller, and I'm only halfway through that book. Grr! Spoiler alert. But I'm all for breaking chairs. Just around Christmas time I was at a bus stop, and was listening to my iPod which was in my pocket. I cannot remember now what exactly happened: it may have involved me trying to re-adjust the orientations of the testes, but anyway it ended up with the iPod falling out of my pocket and onto the ground. A lady who was also at the bus stop gasped in horror, possibly because of the iPod or possibly she was just appalled by my public scrotum antics. Either way, "Love is an arrow" by Aberfeldy was still going strong so I got on the bus. Then, just after the sweet guitar break and the chap was about to start the verse again, the iPod skipped to the next song, and the next, and the next, without actually playing any of them.. While I was glad that it skipped the Barry Manilow for me I took issues when it bypassed "The kids aren't alright". So I turned it off, to try and talk some sense into it. And, unfortunately I think Aberfeldy has become its swan song, as the iPod failed to start again in any meaningful way. So now I'm commuter-musicless. This is where I turn to you, my lovely sinisters, for advice. Should I.. A) spend a load of money on another mp3 player (but perhaps one that is more rugged than the iPod) B) get a new fangled mobile phone that plays mp3s, this seems the ideal option at the moment if I can get a good one for FREE. C) go OLD SKOOL, and get myself a cassette-tape walkman (it ain't gonna skip on me that's for sure!) D) read on my way to work instead of listening to toons. E) bring a guitar and sing on the bus to work F) get a girlfriend who will serenade me instead G) get a new iPod, and a girlfriend who will do future bodily adjustments for me while I hold the iPod firmly in my hands. H) quit work and listen to tunes at home all day. I) none of the above (other suggestions: ______________________________________) Any tips appreciated. Thanks, Ken P.S.: An update for those who follow my epic struggle to find a B+S ticket in either London, Glasgow, or Cambridge: I still don't have a ticket for either London, Glasgow (now past), nor Cambridge. However in a dramatic switch of fortunes, I do now have two tickets for Brighton, anyone want to come with, serenade me on my train journey down? ********************************************************************** This email is confidential and intended solely for the person or entity to whom it is addressed. Non-Scottish Britons of a digital bent will be delighted to learn that BBC 2 Scotland can be viewed on Sky Channel 960 and NTL Channel 927. So there you go... It was saying that George W. Bush is A GOTH. Apparently his fear of Osama Bin Laden is similar to the kind of spectral fears you would get in Gothic novels back in the past. I am looking forward to seeing GWB hanging out with the disaffected goth-metallers who loiter in front of the Central Bank here in sunny Dublin. I'm going to be doing some hanging out of my own soon enough. Do you know that Belle & Sebastian? They are coming to old Dublin town, and some of us are going to see them. The early bird catches the worm, as it were, and we have all ended up with tickets for the Sunday night concert. During the day on Sunday there is talk of heading out to the Botanic Gardens on de northside to look at the plants and stuff. Then we will stroll down to Phibsboro for food and pints, before rolling down to the gig to cause trouble. Does any of this appeal to you? Clay Moore) Date: Sun, 22 Jan 2006 16:35:15 -0600 Subject: Sinister: PUT THE BOOK BACK ON THE collection Message-ID: Hi, list- I've been off the Sinister list for a few years, but I've recently rejoined, and I wanted to share with everyone a B&S project I helped put together. Just so everyone knows, I'm not making a dime off this book, but I want to see it succeed for a couple of reason...one, because I want to promote Belle & Sebastian, and two, because I want to see more projects along these lines. Along with Eric Stephenson of Image Comics (the number three comic book publisher in North America), I helped put together a comic anthology of stories by top cartoonists, based on the songs of Belle & Sebastian. We did so with the band's blessing, although without their direct participation (aside from keeping Stuart abreast of our progress). I was the head of PR & Marketing at Image when we began the process of putting the book together, but I'm now totally freelance. The result is a beautiful thing, called PUT THE BOOK BACK ON THE SHELF, and it will be available next month. We managed to track down a number of brilliant creators who enjoy the band's music, and the results are truly special. I'm extremely proud of it, and I hope it strikes a chord with B&S fans everywhere, and that it leads more people to the band's work. You can already order the book at Amazon UK or Amazon US: Just enter "Put the book back on the shelf" in the search field. The US listing has the proper cover art (by Laurenn McCubbin). Again, I'm not making a penny off the book, so please don't think I'm spamming the list for commercial purposes. I just think all of Sinister will enjoy the book, since that's who I had in mind when I suggested B&S as the best band to represent. It was a bit selfish, as they're my favorite band bar none, but I also knew the band's aesthetic would appeal to indie cartoonists and creators. If people are interested, I'll be glad to explain how the book came together. Clay Moore) Date: Mon, 23 Jan 2006 17:04:40 -0600 Subject: Sinister: More on PUT THE BOOK BACK ON THE SHELF Message-ID: I've gotten a few responses asking for more info on the PUT THE BOOK BACK ON THE SHELF collection, so I'll share some details here with Sinister, including the lineup. I'm not sure how familiar with Image Comics people are, but Image was founded in the early 90s on the strength of big, noisy ugly superhero comics. In the past several years the company has moved toward a much more ecclectic mix, and one of the things we had success with while I was there were a couple of anthologies, featuring some beautiful work by a variety of "indie" creators, including a book called FLIGHT, which featured many lovely tales by a group of artists and animators. Over a year ago, Eric Stephenson (Image's Executive Director) asked me what I thought about an anthology collecting creators' takes on songs by singer/songwriter Stephen Duffy. Eric had been in touch with Duffy, and thought he'd be a good choice. Naturally, Belle & Sebastian leapt to mind for me. Not only do I think the band's songs are full of interesting imagery and open to interpretation, but I knew a lot of comic creators who were into their music. The first thing I did was track down B&S's U.S. management, who led me to the UK management, and eventually to Stuart himself, whose advice was basically, "I say just do it!" And so we set about assembling a talented group of creators, giving them the freedom to interpret the songs however they saw fit. The irony here is that I've been embroiled in a lot of financial and creative difficulty lately, and didn't manage a contribution myself (I was working on a take on "The Wrong Girl"). Crushing, that, but I wasn't about to rush something, and I have to take solace in playing a large role in making the thing happen. So the book has been solicited, is available for preorder, and should hit shops next month. For those who are curious, here's a complete look at the creative lineup, with the song titles they're playing around with. A simple Google search should lead you to lots of info on each of the talents listed below: The State I'm In by Rick Spears & Rob G. On Thursday the 26th I had the utmost pleasure to be at the B&S gig in Birmingham and oh how much I loved it - there might still be people here who might remember my moaning for the lack of B&S gigs here in the tropical Midlands way back in the Year 2000. A smile has been stuck on my face ever since- and this is a period that very few things can make me smile, although I hope it won't last for long. This was only the second time I saw our band live but it was way better than the first time. I was at the front having quite a good view- pity I couldn't see the cellist but hey-ho. There was dancing, there was swearing, there was crowd surfing - by none other than our boy, Stu M. And in the end I squeezed past the 16 year olds - and hooraaaah to them btw! - waving my ticket like it was 10 years ago demanding it to be signed by none other than Stu M ahahaha. Oh and I managed to get myself together and say to him what I have been wanting to say for a long time: Thank you!...ah bless... I am so so so so so so so happy I got to see them I cannot stop dancing and clicking my heels... Hope y'all are doing well... Here I am typing away, eating couscous, helping a kid with her An Inspector Calls coursework AND trying to get the Radcliffe session to work on this archaic piece of machinery the school call a laptop. Frankly my desk is buckling under it's weight and the couscous is far too fond of the space between the keys- that dastardly grain. To further the kids theory that I am a little off my chunk I decided to bring a bit of B&S in the classroom (as if the 4 posters are not enough). The Funny Little Freddie promo was a great source of amusement to my year 9 media kids- having undertaken a rather haphazard project loosely titled "pop promotion" they balked at the notion that our friend Murdoch could be viewed as a sex symbol- my swooning did little to change their opinion. Oddly and happily though in a subsequent lesson i was invited to the switching on of an ipod screen, and there in glorious computer type fontage were the words FUNNY LITTLE FROG- God Bless the downloading fiends. London loves- Belle and Sebastian- i'm sitting down for this one. Miss Perry x ___________________________________________________________ Win a BlackBerry device from O2 with Yahoo!. Turn up at the gates of TEH BOTANIC GARDENS at 2.30pm. We are going to look at plants, and then we are going to drink pints in a pub, and then we are going to go see Belle & Sebastian play a concert. It will rock. I heard the new musical sensation Amy Alysson on the radio just now. She has annoyingly nasal voice. Unlike the fair Isobel. rock on!
