It's on April 30th at the Tramway. We are putting together quite a bill, and it's going to be a whole day's entertainment. So far we can tell you about The Concretes, Vashti Bunyan, Edan and Voice Of The Seven Woods. There will also be DJ sets from David Holmes, Andy Votel, Bob Stanley, Cherrystones, Jerry Dammers and others. St Etienne's film "Finisterre" will be shown several times, and there shall be various exhibits lovingly put together by members of the band. There are only 1000 or so tickets for this very special event, so hurry along to www.triptychfestival.com to get tickets before it's too late." So, do like the man(?) says .... The previous Chicago meetups have been rousing successes, with good times had by all. At the first one I attended, I even got to give Ken Chu a ride in my car. It's the closest thing I've experienced to celebrity until then and to the present. So what fun is there to be had in Uptown? I know of a wacky Vietnamese restaurant just up the road from the Riv, but I haven't been there in a while and can't be sure they're still open. Perhaps the best course of action is to meet at the Borders near the Riv and proceed from there to someplace to grab food or maybe just get coffee in the cafe before the show. Let me know what you want to do Chicagoans! Jason On Mar 1, 2006, at 9:50 AM, leigh kelsey wrote: > When they played the Congress Theatre last time, a list meet was set > up at the Pick Me Up Cafe. Anyway, the Post covered Belle and Sebastian's visit to New York last week in their usual fashion. Happy reading. Whoever spots the worst errors first wins a prize. Okay, not really. -Andrea The New York Post 02/26/2006 AGED SCOTCH - BELLE (and) SEBASTIAN'S 10TH BIRTHDAY By MARY HUHN When Sarah Adams, the violinist in Scottish folk-pop band Belle and Sebastian, describes the group's new rehearsal space - just a mile walk from her house - in Glasgow's West End, she talks about the good greengrocers and curry restaurants nearby. And when guitarist Stevie Jackson talks about the changes in the 10-year-old band, he practically whispers in your ear, making it feel like you're sharing a cup of Ovaltine with him, rather than talking on a phone an ocean away. Such comfort and homey-ness is what you'd expect from this once-reclusive cult band, and, at the same time, not what you'd expect at all. The band has never had a significant hit in the U.S., yet they figure big in the minds and hearts of their fans (who might be shocked to hear of slim sales - a sure sign of a true cult following). The group's latest tour brings them to the Nokia Theatre on Thursday and Friday, just a few weeks after the release their fifth studio album, "The Life Pursuit." While some bands turn from democracy into dictatorship over time, Belle and Sebastian has done just the opposite. Co-founded in 1996 by Jackson and the group's main singer and lyricist, Stuart Murdoch, the band has become more of a collective. "Once, Stuart would play the central instrument and we'd fill in around that. Now sometimes Stuart doesn't even play," says Adams. "It's less of us just backing up a lead instrument and becoming more of band." With a rehearsal space all their own, the band has the luxury of hanging out, continuously working on songs, instead of bringing finished songs to studio recording sessions. "In the first five years, usually whoever had written a song knew where the chords and verses were and would hand out different parts for the different instruments to fill in," says Adams, 32. "Now, for half of the record's songs, when they were brought in, they were something that would hard to be called a song." The members have also grown closer - in age. "We're all kind of more equals now," says Jackson, 37. "When we started, some of us were in our mid-20s and the youngest were teenagers. The gap was enormous. Now everyone is pretty much in their 30s." In those early days, Stuart worked as a janitor in a church and live upstairs in a dingy, rent-free flat, where the group would drink tea into the wee hours and make big plans. "Every now and then we'd have to put the chairs out for the bingo ladies," recalls Adams. It seems almost surprising to them they've come so far, which just adds to their charm. "We didn't become pop stars because of winning personalities and hairdos," says Jackson. "People were drawn to the songs and the characters. There's a magic to them." With the latest disc, the group is inching beyond its signature twee-pop sound and the '60s - moving almost into the '70s with glam-rock and danceable soul now in the mix. It's also striking that there's no string section - the songs evolved without it. And the group's cultish fans will agree, there's still magic. +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister at missprint.org. The moment was priceless. Anyway, it was a great show. The band was in good form and everyone appeared happy, with Stuart and Stevie joking around quite a bit. I want to write you all a wonderful review, but I'm still high (naturally), and quite tired and I have to get up early. This was my first real B&S show having only caught the soundcheck in '98. I refused to see them at the Congess Theatre because the sound is awful and I won't attend a Clear Channel promoted show. The sound tonight was great and I had a perfect view in the balcony. They brought a woman up (you're certainly on this list, aren't you...Amanda, I believe) to sing "Lazy LPJ," and she did a fabulous job. They brought another girl (Jen) up for dancing during "The Wrong Girl." Lotsa new songs, lotsa old songs, someone'll post a set-list. I've become so cynical, and still I think that was unusually great. :) Aadam +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister at missprint.org. - "your cover's blown": both nights, but especially in montreal. even our teddy bear gets up and dances when we play it at home -- and he's a very lazy little bear. - "sleep the clock around": it's only got one of my favourite b&s lines ("and when you saw it all come, it was waving the flag of the united states of calamity, hey"). and it sounded surreal live. - "string bean jean": stuart needed the lyrics, which was oddly endearing. - "slow graffiti": i just wish people wouldn't holler during the quiet bits. they're meant to be quiet. - "electronic renaissance": i love that they've started playing this one regularly. - "jonathan david": totally unexpected. stevie reeks of style. - stuart's dream, which he described in some detail after apologizing for being distracted and making mistakes while playing "seeing other people". he was apparently thinking about this dream he had had. it involved an awkward situation with a former girlfriend and her kid brother who was actually a beeping robot on wheels.    stuart asked for requests during the encore in toronto, and he called on me -- we were meant to raise our hands politely for mr. murdoch. i asked for "meat and potatoes" (i feel a great deal of affection for that song). he smiled, made some comment about getting toronto into the bedroom mood, but played "me and the major". oh well. it was a better request than "legal man" (the girl next to us).    stuart's a bit of a showman, isn't he; he jumped down from the stage in the middle of the montreal show while they were fiddling with sarah's guitar and shook hands with everyone in the front row ("just like elvis," commented stevie), starting with me -- yes, i had positioned myself directly in front of his mic. i was so taken aback i don't think i mustered even a "hello" in response to his rather cordial "hello, nice to meet you, i'm stuart". the rest of the band were rather quiet, especially sarah, who seemed not to have too much to do in her corner on the stage. bob spent most of his time eyeing the girls in the front.    it was altogether too good a weekend. now i've nothing much to look forward to. incidentally, was anyone else in toronto planning to go see isobel last saturday as part of CMW? we bought tickets (i couldn't help it, it was three parts morbid curiosity to one part genuine interest in hearing her live). then on friday she cancelled the show -- according to the man at soundscapes, she never made it out of the UK due to some illness which prevented her from flying (an ear infection, he hypothesized). hmm. i apologize if this got a bit rambly. i suppose i'm making up for over a year of lurking. layla p.s.: the new pornographers were really good too. i just realized i left out any mention of them, and that seemed a bit unfair. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Anyway, here's the blurb...! This Friday is the first HDIF at Nambucca, our new venue in north London. It's a lovely, atmospheric old pub venue - a great back room, and loads of room at the front bar. There's also a screen in the bar and we've put together a HDIF DVD of classic indie pop and soul videos - Dexys, Smiths, B&S, Hefner, Weather Prophets, loads and loads. Can't wait to see it in action...! The guest DJ for Friday is John Hunt from Glasgow's legendary National Pop League club night. He turned in a superb set last time he DJed at HDIF - http://www.howdoesitfeel.co.uk/johnhunt.html - and knowing John, he'll have worked really hard to put together an even better set for this time. He's on between 10.30pm and midnight. As there's five Fridays in March, this will be the last HDIF for three weeks....so please come along for a dance! Plus! Tickets for our HDIF Presents show on Thursday April 13th starring Tender Trap (with Clauda Gonson on drums), Fosca and Strange Idols are selling steadily. You can pick one up from http://www.wegottickets.com/event/9462 That's it for now. Hope to see you on Friday! Ian x --------------- How Does It Feel To Be Loved? Gentleman and scholar, Lawrence Mikkelsen, said: > PS - Melbourne people ... Vanessa and I are coming over for the B&S > show ... keen for a picnic or a meetup or something? I say: Yes. Yes indeed. Does anybody else fancy it? Given that it's Melbourne in June, I'd say a picnic is perhaps somewhat on the optimistic side, though if we give ourselves the option to take shelter in a nearby pub, we can certainly attempt it. The gig's at the Forum, which has several advantages over the Palais, where they played last time. For one thing, it's somewhere you can stand up - there should be a bit more atmosphere than there was at the rather muted, all-seated affair we were treated to last time Belle & Sebastian swung through town. Also, we needn't make the epic, unpleasant trek South of the river - a huge bonus. Plus the Forum has this weird thing going on where it tries to make you think that you're outside, when actually you're still inside. It's a difficult visual effect to describe, but it's really quite striking. Hang on, here are some pictures, so you can see what I mean: http://www.marrinertheatres.com.au/hireforum.htm (Click on the ones down in the bottom right-hand corner.) Any word on the support yet? It better not be bloody Architecture in Helsinki again. Yechh. How about Art of Fighting or Sodastream or someone like that? As far as a picnic location goes, should we try for something near-ish to the venue? There's probably a bit of grass by Federation Square we can set up camp in. I'll go down there and have a look around, perhaps, once the madness of the Commonwealth Games has passed. Drop me an email if you're interested in getting on board, and we can discuss some details off-list. The new record's been on pretty heavy rotation with me, I have to admit. I think it's some of their best work. I wasn't completely sure about it at first - "The Blues are Still Blue" gave off a weird Bucks Fizz sort of vibe, and "Song for Sunshine" felt like it might become the next "Beyond the Sunrise" or "Roy Walker", but thankfully it all came good eventually. I can even pinpoint the exact moment when I knew everything would be alright: it's when Stuart sings "will you bugger off, I've got work to do" in "Act of the Apostle, Part Two". In fact, those final three tracks are genius. AotAPT sort of ties everything back in together, and is a stunning song in its own right. Then "For the Price of a Cup of Tea" has that classic final-track-of-an-album sound to it - you can almost see the credits scrolling up the screen over the top of it, somehow. But then "Mornington Crescent" sneaks up on you, as if it's not really part of the album at all- it's like when that cooler kid who was a year older than you in school taped an album for you, and stuck the obscure b-side that everyone said was far better than the album tracks on that free bit of space at the end of the tape. "Mornington Crescent" is that song, but they've put it right there on the CD for you. Nice one. That said, how unspeakably awful are the filmclips? Almost as bad as Stuart's goofy little hat, surely? Come on, someone had to say it. True, I am spoiled to the teeth for only ever having seen them in Scotland, and as such paying a max of, what, fifteen quid or something in Edinburgh when I was making the pound (and a min of zero at the Botanics! Hurrah for free things!) But you know me. I'll be there in the end. Prolly dragging along some only-partially-willing boy, as usual...but THIS ONE will be legally bound to me by then, so he'll have NO CHOICE!! mouwahahahahaaaaaa!! As always, I leave the planning in David's capable hands. If we even get tickets...are they on sale yet? Are they sold out already?? DID I MISS THE RAPTURE??? And I never knew true love...(erm, don't mention that part to Grant...) My favourite song is, unsurprisingly, We Are The Sleepyheads, because I can dance my ass off to it. My least favourite song, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, is Song for Sunshine. I say surprisingly beacause I do like the chorus: "Suuuunshine! We all seeeeee the same skyyyyyy!" But I don't like the rest of the song much. It kind of annoys me. The dugga dugga dugga keyboards...reminiscent of a crappy porn soundtrack, no? Besides, soooooooomething has to come last. A pretty strong record, in my opinion, even tho Tigermilk will always be my comfort food, Belles-wise. But we all have our personal failings, and this is mine. marisa --- David Hewitt wrote: > Erm, so... is nobody else keen on the idea of a > Melbourne picnic, or > did this simply not get through to the list? Not as obvious as it sounds, since I've been off work for 2 months and counting, and had two spells in hospital with heart failure, but things are improving enough that I can cope with standing around and short walking now... Anyway, if anybody else out there in listland is going, and fancies meeting up first, come along to Berbati's at 19 SW 2nd Ave. I'm meeting some other people there (look for a "MiPL" sign on the table), most of whom aren't going to the show, but it would be great to have some more company... And it's only about three blocks away from the theater... I'll be there from about 6.30; until 7pm it's Happy Hour which means $2 microbrew beers and some $2 food as well. Sorry, I've been a bit distracted. You know how it is. Anyway, you know that Belle & Sebastian? They played a gig here in Dublin relatively recently, just before their album came out. We lived the dream, not merely going to it, but meeting beforehand with some other B&S fans (including Wookie or Seamus or whatever he calls himself from here) for a walk in the Botanic Gardens, later repairing to a pubbe for some booze. The Botanic Gardens were great crack... we got to stroll around the green houses and then outside we saw the poison garden and the world’s tartiest squirrels. We were also amused by a sign in the greenhouse beside the venus flytraps, warning that triggering the traps for amusement could result in death. Down at the concert we arrived to find that support band The Brakes were already onstage. I found myself thinking that their riffy guitary sounds were just what I needed in my several beers in state, but others thought that they (the Brakes, not the beers) were a bit on the lame side. They are meant to feature some of British Sea Power, a band that in retrospect I reckon were not up to that much. B&S themselves played a stormer… I had become a bit sick of seeing them live, after seeing them four times in a year once. Well, absence makes the heart grow fonder, and the gap had left me much better able to appreciate their live skills and rapport with each other and their audience. They played a fair amount of songs I did not then recognise, presumably from the new album. One particularly epic unfamiliar track was introduced to me as ‘Your Cover’s Blown’… apparently it was a b- side to ‘Wrapped Up In Books’, a single from the last album. Looks like I may have to start collecting B&S singles again. I was also amused to learn that “Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant” is now considered an old Belle & Sebastian album. They did however play more than no genuinely old songs, and hearing ‘Electronic Renaissance’ live means that I can now die in peace. Stuart didn't break his guitar this time. Anyway, it was all a bag of fun, and in retrospect I wished I hadn't pegged up to Belfast for the Tuesday gig. But you can't live your life on rewind, so perhaps it was for the best that I didn't try to re-create the magic of the time I went up a couple of years back to see B&S in the Nelson Mandela hall, in the company of a great many Irish Sini-Bowlie types who seem to have largely disappeared since then (bar the aforementioned Seamus/Wookie and yer man Psi). Great days, Gay, great days, wheh wheh wheh. Um yeah, whatever. I'll be back shortly with some comments on THE NEW ALBUM. I've been reading your mail these several years. And I went up to the city to see the Belles last night! Here is my homework: Report from B&S gig in Saint Frank, 3/21/06 In the SOMA district of San Francisco there is a kind of ghetto for furniture sellers, in the midst of which is a vast barn with no seats where normally they have wild furniture-roping contests or some such. Except on Tuesday, when they had Belle y Sebastian plus Nude Photographers or whatever (actually they were quite good. I had bought their album and not really gotten into it, but the live show was great esp. the drummer who is a star. Extra credit for thoughtful use of cheesy plastic keyboards.) The main event began at 9:30. The band came on in the usual 2-4-1-1 formation with Stuart leading the attack up front and Stevie tucked in just behind him. A four-man midfield featured an un-named lady cellista plus Sarah, Mick and the marvellous Bobby who made little attacking runs down the right wing (stage right that is). Beans at left back, Richard on the right with the above-mentioned nameless but versatile auxilliary dropping back to cover the near post during set-plays. Stuart had thin striped shirt and burgundian pants. Sarah in red hoodie. Beans with walrus 'tache. A charcoal suit was wearing Stevie. Here's what I remember of the set. They must surely have played Blues are Still Blue (right?) but I can't actually remember that happening! Also the order is really confused in my memory. Stars of Track and Field Sunny Day Sinister Funny Little Frog White Collar She's Losing It Sunshine Jonathan David Sleepyheads Your Cover's Blown Dog on Wheels Sukie in the Graveyard Piazza NY Catcher I'm a Cuckoo Fox in t'snow 'Leccy Renaissance Judy and the Dream (sing along at first!) Simple Things Arab Strap Missing: none of the B&S-classic style songs from That 70's Album (i.e. Mornington Cres., Dress Up in You, Acts Ch.1&2 vs.9-21, etc.) were played. Nothing off TBWTAS until the encore. No amusing cover was performed. None of the songs I personally yelled out (Dream #2, Strng. Bn. Jn., Marx'n'Engels, many others). A loud-voiced fellow called for Rollercoaster Ride, which Stuart heard and called an "intersting choice" before not playing it. But I think what was played hung together really well as a set. It was quite youthful and bouncy and moved along nicely. The only thing I felt the crowd was not quite in the mood for when it came up was Piazza NYC. The up-tempo material from the new album was just great and a big hit with the very young crowd (well everyone looks young to me, but these peoples really were young and many had thick-plastic-rimmed oval spectacles, in the manner of intellectual youth). I really enjoyed Your Cover's Blown. I also liked Jonathan David which I am normally bored by. Stevie and Stuart really hammed it up onstage with that evening's freshly selected Bride of Murdoch from the audience. She was called Jamie which Stuart found to be highly American of her. It was a contrast from last time they were here at the Warfield. Bigger crowd, less intimate, more rock show. Musically they were pretty tight with only the occasional vocal weaknesses in evidence. Y'know who I think has catalysed this new direction? The new post-"Hands Child" B&S? None other than young "Relfast" Robert Kildea. The boy is an awesome bass-player (e.g. on Sukie) and plays a mean lead as well. There's just something about him that gives the band a bit more width to explore which is a good thing. Plus he is easily the most attractive figure on stage, even when he's not there. I felt Stuart's banter was a little stretched in some places but of course everything went down very well with us, the crowd. I have a funny little idea he was waiting for ad-libs to come to him in the closing cadences of Arab Strap but nothing arrived so he just kind of wound it up. But I could be quite mistaken here. I can't wait for them to come back and see how they are progressing but I do wonder - if TLP gets the sales it deserves (and it really is a strong, accessible album) the next tour could be in stadia. Or godforbid the bloody Shoreline Amphitheater. Or the Sleeptrain Mattress Auditorium in Marysville. And this would not necessarily fill me with joy like last noght's wonderful concert. I wish you all could have been there, I feel sure you would have enjoyed it. Perhaps next time my fellow lurkers and I can have a picnic where we meet in a bar and not talk to each other, but just listen to what one of the other tables is saying. We could buy a drink and not have to pay $6 for a small cup of wine inside the furniture barn, which would be nice. Next time, ok? I was there last night and really enjoyed it...I forgot to post to the list to see if anyone wanted to get together before/ after, but oh well, maybe next time! The band seemed spunky but a bit tired, given that it's the last few days or so of their US tour, and sleeping on a busses, planes and trains must get old after a few weeks. I'm looking forward to seeing them at the Hollywood Bowl in July (where hopefully, refreshed, they'll do many of their amazing chamber/real piano/harpsichord/orchestral pieces). Sarah and the unknown instrumentalist were very much in fine form last night, but with a 40-60 piece orchestra, it can only get better (in my humble opinion). I saw Air with the LA Philharmonic a few years ago at the Hollywood Bowl, which was one of the most memorable concerts i've ever been to. Anyone else going from the list? Before discussing it, however, may I refer you to this website: http://www.waronwant.org/?lid=10200. It concerns a trip Stuart & Chris made to the Middle of the East to look at the Israeli occupation of the Palestinians and stuff. There are some nice pictures there, including one of Stuart climbing through a gap in that wall thing the Israelis are building. I can't remember whether anyone has posted a link to this before, and I can't check the archives, so maybe you will find the website interesting, or maybe it is all old hat to you at this stage. Anyway, what about that album? And what about that Alexis Petridis fellow? I was amused by how he scoved at B&S fans before expounding the most unreconstructed old-school B&S fan position - that the band essentially went rubbish the moment Stuart let anyone else sing or write a song. God bless him. I’ve realty had it with this lazy position, which neglects to point out the pleasures that derive from listening to a record and hearing several voices singing. Also, this position conveniently forgets the many clunkers Stuart himself has written. I showed my disapproval of Mr Petridis’ review by mailing him a human ear. However, when Petridis moves on from cliché he gets a bit more interesting. For the new album, the band went to America and worked with this producer guy who is apparently relatively well-known, but not so well known as Trevor Horn. However, the album is to some extent of a piece with “Dear Catastrophe Waitress”, being heavily produced in a way that previous B&S outings were not. It’s just maybe not as good. Actually, it’s definitely not as good – where DCW was a career highlight, this is the kind of record where you start to wonder whether you can finally give up on your favourite band. Or so it does on a first listen. Subsequently it goes ever better on the ear, so I may eventually conclude that “The Life Pursuit” is the greatest work of art the human race will ever produce. I kind of doubt it, however, as at this stage I really am beginning to conclude that over all it's not *that* good. But what does it sound like? Like I said, it sounds produced. The songs, particularly towards the beginning of the record, have the kind of jauntiness you get from people who listen to a lot of disco and Northern Soul (without actually sounding that like disco or Northern Soul). Later tracks are mostly a bit less engaging or a bit subtler, with ‘Dress Up In You’ sounding the most like something from one of their pre-DCW albums. Some of the others seem a bit unformed, with ‘We Are The Sleepyheads’ being particularly guilty here. And having two down-tempo whingers to finish off the album was probably a major contributor to my initial impression that this record was a bit duff. On balance, the good tracks are really good, if you like the produced B&S sound that does not sound like classic B&S. And like all B&S albums bar “Tigermilk” the good songs are weighed down by filler (all Murdoch-written – the one Stevie Jackson tune is a charmer). Some people have wondered whether this will be the record that breaks B&S through to the big time. I think not - if they haven't made it to the big-time by now I really do not think they ever will. On the other hand, given how popular B&S are now, maybe it is time to conclude that they broke through some time ago. Maybe so indeed. Anyway, that's all for now. If any of you are in NOTTINGHAM, keep an eye out for me next weekend, as that is where I will be. Message-ID: OK, so I went to see some band play on Thursday. You might have heard of them. As is traditional, I'll start with an inaccurate setlist, probably missing at lesat one song and certainly not in exactly the right order, but fairly close... Quite a few pleasant surprises in there... The State I Am In (sounding much fuller than normal, and better than ever - maybe they've just got a better soundman now?) Another Sunny Day (why on earth hasn't this been a single yet? It's easily the most radio-friendly song on the album - are they just waiting until the summer to release it?) Funny Little Frog Belle And Sebastian (!!! Not heard that one live for years !!!) Sukie In The Graveyard (the one song from the new album which didn't really work as well live as on the record) Electronic Renaissance (worked remarkably well live. Although I now know why Stevie doesn't normally dance on stage...) Song For Sunshine (because every album has to have its clunker, right? And it's not nearly as bad a clunker as previous albums... I just keep wondering why they sing "Sunshine, the OC" in the chorus, have they become addicted to rubbish TV shows?) We Are The Sleepyheads Dress Up In You (which apparently is approximately 26% a true story...) Slow Graffiti (Yay for another blast from the past...) Portland, Oregon (Stevie's song, performed only once before when they played Portland 5 years ago. A bit cheesy sounding, but one of his better tunes. The lyrics might need some work though - "It's a rainy state, // But it's great when you're on a date") Jonathan David (still sounding as great as ever - I never understood why some people didn't rate this song) Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying Your Cover's Blown (I can understand why people didn't rate this one though... The middle bit's great, the rest is forgettable) I Don't Love Anyone (yes, it still sounds like a Beautiful South song) I'm A Cuckoo White Collar Boy (featuring more evidence of why Stevie shouldn't dance on stage) Judy And The Dream Of Horses For the encore, Stuart asked for requests from the audience, and they got together and decided which ones to play. The winners were: Expectations Lazy Line Painter Jane (as usual, featuring a girl pulled out from the audience singing the Monica Queen part. The difference being, for possibly the first time when I've seen them do it, the girl who came up not only knew the words but could actually sing) So, a massive four songs from Tigermilk, plus another even older song from the Dog On Wheels EP, but no Twattybus or Fishyclap... They sounded fantastic throughout, so much more energy onstage than in the old days (or maybe it's just because I'm not allowed to drink at the moment so I was actually stone cold sober at a gig for the first time in ages? Seriously, it's over two months now since I got really ill, this is the longest I've gone without alcohol since I was about 15...) They were on good form for the between-song banter as well, whether it was complaining about the magically self-detuning guitar, or complaining even more about Stevie's whistling during the subsequent short delay. For the fashion police out there, no real surprises: Stevie in a suit, Stuart in a tight white T-shirt and bowler hat, Sarah in a hoodie, Mick in a checked shirt, Richard gurning behind the drumkit, and Chris completing his 70s throwback look with a pornstar moustache. You know, B&S fandom might not be the same as it used to be - Sinister and Bowlie are both pretty much dead, and most gigs aren't one-off events any more - but the music's better than ever. As the Duke would say, Keep The Faith Kids. Big Stu (noticing that the Decemberists, the Shins and the New Pornographers are all playing ATP, and wishing he could go... All three ex-B&S support acts, and the first two both from right here in Portland...) +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister at missprint.org. Message-ID: <1fd6a5e30603271412n55581a79xd0b2ef62a29fd62f@mail.gmail.com> My friend Amy sang onstage with the band in Portland and she'd love to get a recording of it if anyone has it. The email she asked me to forward is below. xo, leigh ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Amy Date: Mar 27, 2006 4:09 PM Subject: b&s To: leigh kelsey I was just wondering if anyone who was at the Portland, OR show on 3/23/06 has any recording of the show. I was picked to go onstage to sing "Lazy Line Painter Jane" with the band for the last song, and I would really like to see or hear a recording of this as a memory and to show all my friends. Also, does anyone know if the band was recording this show, or maybe know of someone at Jeepster or the band that I can email and ask for a recording? Thanks! +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister at missprint.org.
