From popsingersfear at xxx.com Tue Apr 3 16:24:10 2007 From: popsingersfear at xxx.com (Gayle E. Anderson) Date: Tue, 03 Apr 2007 15:24:10 +0000 Subject: Sinister: The Sounds Of Industry. Message-ID: Sinister. The weekend. Work is good. its much better, not working with people. Horses are easier to understand and I am not concerned in the slightest by their attitudes or the standard of their personal hygiene. On Sunday, Ken Chu informed me of his presence in Scotland. After establishing that this was not an April Fools I joined him for a pint. Or two. Or three. Or so. Then, Glasgow bore witness to Sinister vs Bowlie Table Football. Any comments? "..." Monday. A hangover prevented me seeing any of the morning. The afternoon brought nothing. The evening brought bowling and pool. 1-1 for bowling (although....my '1' was a higher score than her '1') And I won at pool. Today. Its nice and sunny outside, I can see this from my position at this desk. Sunny, with a bit of a breeze. In the background I can hear the radio, the sound of printing, the sound of the boys in the factory singing and joking. There is dust on the window sills and wooden panelling on the walls. Personalised comic strips, photographs, calanders, sponsorships, data control, drawings and a clock, that tells the wrong date. Facing these windows is a whitish rough cast wall, with one fire exit (that I can see) and no windows. The upper half of the wall is corrugated brown metal. In front of the wall bushes grow half heartedly, yet remain well groomed. The sky is clear and blue with but a slight whisp of a cloud that will disappear with the breeze. A parking ticket from Prestwick airport, below a software cd and a bluetooth headset user manual to my right, tells me that someone has been flying. Then I remember that someone is in Dublin. The business cards have changed, from when their appearance was imprinted in my memory. They've kept with the times, unlike the date on the clock. Time could be standing still, if it wasn't for the steady, continuous pulse of industry in the background. Sometimes, you just know when its time for a cup of tea. And that time is now. Not for any particularly exciting reason but because he once said (back in something like 2001, and on an ilx thread of all places, if I'm not mistaken) that, if he didn't have time for Sinister any more, it was because of all the other directions it has thrown him in. I still had time for Sinister back then but still, it made sense. All the other directions. Well, today it looks more like "all the other directions that all the other directions that all the other directions that Sinister has thrown me in" but still I wouldn't be anywhere without it, or at least so it seems on drunk, emotional evenings (I still have the odd one of those) or when a song comes back to haunt me (usually 'I fought in a war' or 'It could have been a brilliant career' or perhaps 'Dog on wheels: something where Stuart's voice figures heavily, anyway). Or at least (and that is a fact) I'd never be where I am now: in a flat on Exeter Road (in Exmouth, Devon) where the sun falls through the bay window forming patterns on the carpet, listening to the Pines sing about the things that make my world go round. I wouldn't know who the Pines are, because I'd never have got a lovely pink and blue 7" in the post, sent by a kind Australian soul. I wouldn't know who coined the phrased 'the songs that make their world go round', either, because I wouldn't have got a tape from Richard the Lurker with 'Tout va bien' on it. I wouldn't have stood in the front room of a little house in Dundee and listened to it while watching the rain fall on the flowers. And this wouldn't be happening, either: http://www.exetergoespop.com/ All that I can say is that I'm glad. And that I have to go to the launderette. LONDON DANCING THIS SUNDAY) Message-ID: Hey Sinister, It gets harder and harder to think of Belle and Sebastian song title puns these days, but today was another punny day, so I thought I'd write you guys. I like that on the Belle and Sebastian myspace page, in the "Sounds Like" section it is said that they just sound like their records. This makes them my favourite friend on myspace I think.. or they will be, when I manage to get round to befriending them, and if they'll have me. Because I haven't, "Faith" is still my favourite friend on myspace, she's quite a funny girl, you know the kind who is adorably clumsy and disorganised.. she kept trying to send me a link to this website that apparently would make me loads of money, almost every other day, but she always gets it wrong and ends up sending me the same link each time. If she didn't live so far away, and were real, I would have gone and given her a hug and tell her that it's okay. Oh well. Do you guys have plans this Sunday? If not, you should come to this dancing thing in London. I'm likely to be in Copenhangen for a couple of weeks at the start of October, and will probably pop over to Malmo (and maybe Göteborg) for a day or two while I'm there. I know that's ages away right now, but I'd be interested in some advice about good places to hear (indie) music, addresses of good record stores in any of those cities, and recommendations of good Scandanavian music I should hunt down and buy while I'm there. As you might be able to tell from my last name, my dad's a Dane, although my Danish is pretty much limited to "hello", "goodbye" and "thanks". I've been to Denmark a fair few times, but the last time was with my wife, so I did a lot less record shopping than I would have liked. In-Reply-To: <200704252321.AAA27814@missprint.org> Message-ID: .... of music. Music lovers. Yeah. Hello! Any interest in makin' sweet love...ly music and saving the world AT THE SAME TIME? Ooh! I've gotten myself involved in helping to organise the UK's biggest music festival. It'll take place over the entire month of October, in loads of venues across the UK, and all proceeds will benefit Oxfam. It's cleverly called Oxjam. Last year was its first outing, and they made half a million pounds! This year, we're aiming for a cool million. Anyway... I thought I'd try to lure some sad yet soulful bedroom devotees out of their bedrooms to get involved. We're currently recruiting official event organisers, who will be all trained up proper-like, to put on some of the bigger events, or a bunch of small ones, or whatever their little twee hearts desire! There's only a few more days left to sign up for these posts, but you can do it here: http://www.oxfam.org.uk Otherwise, we'll take all the help we can get, so even if you don't want to commit to throwing a big shindig yourself, you can still get involved in other ways. You and your colleagues can get sponsored to participate in a 'work opera', for instance, where you spend an entire day communicating solely through song. Or you could dress up as a gorilla and deliver singing telegrams. Or you could fry up some banana and peanut butter Elvis sandwiches as part of a rock star luncheon. Or you could just volunteer to be my minion as I try to coordinate a couple hundred gigs in Glasgow. Phew! Won't that be fun! If you visit the above site, there will be more info and local contacts, or you can email me. I'd especially like to hear from Glasgow folk, as I'm bursting with ideas for events here, but I'm not supposed to put on any of them myself. Some of them even include our beloved belles and friends. Mmmm hmmm. Incentive enough? In other news, another festival was in town this weekend - Triptych - and some of us Sinisterenes were lucky enough to attend an epic day of fab music organised by the illustrious Stephen Pastel and friends. although I've lived in Glasgow now for coming on five years and see Stephen about toon on a pretty regular basis, I had never seen The Pastels perform, so it was quite a treat! There were tons of them on stage, too. They roped in loads of friends, mostly of Teenage Fanclub and Tenniscoats fame, and did TWO sets - an early, wee bit experimental 'quiet' set, and a full-on closing set at the late hour of 11pm (which was sadly more difficult to hang on for than I'd like to admit). It was pretty gosh-darn special! And in between we were treated to other fantastic sets from the adorable and talented Tenniscoats, the amazingly rockin' ladies of Electrolane, wacky local popsters The Royal We (featuring our very own wee Patrick!) and the quirky cool Pierre Bastien. Sadly, I had to work yesterday and therefore missed what was surely another amazing show for the Ballads of the Book, a super ace project combining Scottish artists and musicians. If you haven't heard about it, check it out here: http://www.chemikal.co.uk/news.htm There's a CD to be bought there too, so if you're willing to part with a few squid, there ya go! There's been loads of good stuff happening 'round here, with even more to come! Indian Summer is shaping up to be a pretty ace, so if anyone is looking for an excuse to come visit, July 14-15 would be a good time. http://www.indiansummerglasgow.com Yeah!
