Message-ID: Listees! Well, sometimes it feels like it's just me here. Howling like a beagle in a wind tunnel. But I know there are still people out there in internets-land. Anyway, I'm not sure if it's been mentioned here (probably not, given the traffic of late) but Continuum Press have just published a book on "If You're Feeling Sinister" as part of its 33 1/3 series. It's written by Pitchforkmedia editor Scott Plagenhoef, and, based on the half I've read so far, it's a pretty good read. What's more, it's really filling my heart with a sense of pride. You see, there's a lot of talk about this list in there - talk about *us* - and just how revolutionary this thing was back in the late 90s, before MySpace and FaceBook and before record companies could use the internet to generate hype about a band. (Remember Pete Waterman spitting the dummy back in '99 when "our" band beat Steps for the 'best newcomer' award? How great was that?) Plagenhoef reminds me of just how hard it was (and how much fun it was) to be a Belle and Sebastian fan in 1998. Especially for me in New Zealand, when the NME arrived by sea mail, about three months out of date. But also just how mysterious and enigmatic the band were, and how much more rewarding that made the music feel. So, anyway, I've been thinking a lot about Sinister. I'd love to say I was there at the *very* beginning, but, alas, I didn't join until 1999, which things were already up and running. But, Lordy ... I've met a fair few real-life friends on this list. People who've slept in my spare room, people who have sent me mix tapes and CDs, people who have taken me to bars in New York and Glasgow and Melbourne, and people who have put me up in their spare bed in Scotland and Australia. People in foreign cities whose houses I have been 'round to, just because we like the same band. Hell, the guy I sit next to at my day job in Auckland, New Zealand, and who I struggle to try and run an indie label with is an ex-Sinister listee who I met online. And not only people ... if it weren't for B&S and Sinister I'd never have discovered Orange Juice, or Josef K, or The Go-Betweens, or The Field Mice, or Hefner, or Felt, or Spearmint, or Love, or The Left Banke, or a bunch of other bands I've taken to heart over the years. I appreciate that this list will probably never peak the way it did 'round the time of "Legal Man". I know a lot of us have grown older, have got married, had kids, or found themselves with a mortgage, or maybe just stopped listening, or caring quite so much. (Or found that there are more productive or useful things to do with their spare time than to post long, rambling stories on internet message boards.) Still, it's nice to know that the list still exists out there, and that I'm still a part of it. Honey, Helen, Scott, Nick, Jeremy, Stacey, David, Julie, Jim, Laura, Ian, Lucy, Patrick, Katie, Paul, Eric, Sean, Amy, Marisa and anyone else who I've met, shared a drink with, corresponded with, or argued with online ... it's been a pleasure. Remember: We were there. Wishing you all well, Lawrence xxx Flying the flag, 1999 - present PS - Jenowl. She made a brief reappearance a few years ago. I wonder whatever happened. If she didn't exist, would the list have invented her? +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister at missprint.org. Ça va? Erm I've been learning French, lately. I meant to have done that years ago: it was to be an attempt to woo "Larry the Frog", former member of this parish. I may have left it a little late now, but it's still fun to learn. And sorry I hadn't been in touch, lately, it's not because I've been neglecting you, but it's just so difficult to come up with new Belle and Sebastian song title puns these days - I was really excited when I hear of this "Push Barman To Open Old Wounds", briefly thinking it was to be full of new punning material, but in fact it was just all the EPs put together. I still haven't listened to the Christmas tunes either, that Sam Walton mentioned - as he mentioned the myspace website but I typed in http://www.myspace.com/belleandsebastian I found a Captain Beefheart tribute website! Now I searched for it properly I realise that I needed to put "theband" in front of it - it makes sense I guess. However that song is gone :-( Je suis désolé. However, from there I found the link to Banchory from there and they have a breathtaking array of merchandise! A Calendar with Stuart holding a glass to different places in Scotland! And there's even the Funny Little Frog "Fame Academy"! Check out the winners - awesome voices! All of these make me happy, to see my favourite band go from being the little plucky newcomer to now rock stars tour de force. Way too much Belle and Sebastian stuff in this post. I'm glad I'm still here, and I hope people will come post again. It's where we live, afterall. I have skipped it a lot over the years. As a teen, I'd buy a chocolate bar and a Coke and save the rest of my lunch money for records. As a child, it was ham sandwiches with my initials lovingly applied by Grandma with squeezy mustard, or Top Ramen noodles. At school, it was a sack lunch most days (I hated the way that sounded) except on pizza day or "lucky tray day" when I would buy lunch at school. Did anyone else have lucky tray day at school? They would put a sticker on the bottom of the lucky tray and if you got it you'd get a prize. Early gambling. I think I won it 2 or 3 times in the 7 years I went to that school. Lunch these days is spent with baby James, listening to a random mix from the Belle & Sebastian catalogue. It's the only time I ever really listen to music lately. I find the songs to be sort of an aural journal, the old favourites jogging my memories of the times when I first heard them. "This Is Just A Modern Rock Song" comes up quite often recently and I find myself daydreaming as I spoon pureed chicken casserole into James' birdlike mouth, about the apartment I had in Studio City and the life I used to lead then. I suppose in 10 years' time, I'll listen to "Act Of The Apostle" and think about these rainy winter afternoons in the greater London suburbs, singing along quite out of tune as James pounds the tray with his chubby fingers and gives me a sloppy toothed grin. I wish that I could sing, I'd stay in a melody ... Love, Rachel fruitloop Want to see what I have been up to? Not sure where it's from, but they're playing 'Belle & Sebastian' now and I feel a little woozy with a dab of whimsy and giant dollop of nostalgia. 1998 - heddy days indeed. I was 16 and it had been a full year since that fateful day when I first heard Jo Whiley play a song called Lazy Line Painter Jane on the Evening Session. It was a glorious August evening, about 8:30, and I was watering my neighbours garden for the princely sum of £1 a day. I waited 'til the evening so I could listen to pop records on my little transistor radio and this particular ditty had me mesmerised. I noted down the name of afore mentioned boy/girl duo - Belle & Sebastian - and caught the bus into Ipswich the next morning where Rex Records were able to sell me the 7" for £1.49. I sometimes feel that everything in my life can be traced back to that evening, and then the part of me with a job to do, bills to pay and another degree to complete says "get a grip" and I concentrate on Newsnight and cheese sandwiches again. I saw another Glasgow band on Saturday - Glasvegas. They were playing at The Junction in York which is just the back room of a pub really, and it was rammed. With good reason though - they were absolutely stunning and I recommend anyone with a passing interest in The Jesus & Mary Chain / Phil Spector / Shoegaze explores further. On that note, I'm going to drift off into the finest of B&S's live moments (Electronic Renaissance) and then have a cherry bakewell. lots of love chris __________________________________________________________ Sent from Yahoo! I'm sure it will be short-lived, like a butterfly, but beautiful and mysterious just the same. There, that takes care of the twee quotient. It's so nice to read others' memories of our fair band. I have so many: Tigermilk: dorming in downtown Manhattan, the soundtrack to so many walks through Chinatown, Soho, and the West Village on my way to and from class Photo Jenny: the tiny little flat in London I shared with someone from California, a neighbor starting to dance right at the end when it gets a little bit techno, her face falling when A Century of Elvis started Legal Man: the record store I bought it from one early summer day in Newark, Delaware, a summer home from college Jonathan David: a short-lived relationship I had, listening to that CD over and over again as we hid from a New York summer The Life Pursuit: cold winter mornings commuting to work on the 7 train from Queens, pulling into Grand Central just as "Act of the Apostle, Part 2" would kick in And of course: If You're Feeling Sinister: the first boy I really had feelings for, the boy that gave me a mixtape whose side A contained an entire album from this strange band called Belle & Sebastian that he loved. I never fell in love with the boy, but my relationship with the band is still going strong, almost 10 years later. I'm glad it's still going strong for all of you, too.
