I saw B&S last night at the Metro, they were amazing. I am glad that I drove the 3 hours to see them, it was WELL worth it. All these exchanges about music pour fait amour - can I lower the tone? It strikes me that The tindersticks latest opus (curtains) is a fine dirty low down album. Not necessarily the best for sweet romance, it's been pitched - if indeed it was recorded for this purpose, and I'm sure Stuart Staples like to bump n' grind in front of the fire, you know - more at the dirty lonely man market. Songs about scratching, rented rooms, cheating, and tired hungry bears who've been out all night making sweet love to bears they shouldn't be with. I am reminded of a friend of mine (and I mention it because I woke up this morning with no feeling in my arms after sleeping on them all night. Believe me, dragging your dead limbs across a room and switching an alarm clock off with your elbow is not the easiest task) who used to make his own hand numb before onanism. Apparently he's not the only one to do this. Apparently, also, people quite enjoy it. As someone who finds numbness and pins and needles quite amusing, I don't think I could do it. Sinister: another TWATTYBUS review

i checked the archives, and didn't see this one, so here's a review of TBWTAS from Drawer B (http://www.space-age-bachelor.com/drawerb) This follow up to the very brilliant If Youre Feeling Sinister has a lot to live up to since this overly shy eight-piece band from Glasgow, Scotland has graced the unlikely pages of Entertainment Weekly and been name dropped on the MTV Video Music Awards. Belle & Sebastian write heartbreaking, simple pop songs characterized by lead vocalist Stuart Murdochs light melancholic cadences, which bear a disturbing resemblance to the late great Nick Drake. The song structures are reminiscent of early Velvet Underground while the melodies hint at traces of both The Smiths and Felt. This album while neither as delicate nor as sentimental as its predecessor is perfect melancholic pop. The lyrics take the minutiae of mundane everyday life and glorify it with the intensity of high school journal keepers while maintaining a sinister sense of humor: Take Judy with her bow and arrow shes a mastermind/Too frumpy for the teenage population of her time/Car coat she has a quilted jacket with a hood if it rains/Big pockets for the pharmaceuticals she takes to fix her brain (The Rollercoaster Ride). This is Belle & Sebastians third full length- their first album, Tigermilk, is extremely hard to come by as only 1,000 (vinyl) copies were pressed in England- and it displays quite a bit more confidence both lyrically and musically. The album occasionally loses focus, however, when Murdoch passes the microphone to some of his bandmates, whose voices fail to create the intimacy that separates Belle & Sebastian from legions of other like-minded bands. This album succeeds in being a bit more adventurous with electric guitars edging into the forefront (A Summer Wasting, Simple Things) and its sparing use of synthetics, but things do digress slightly with an unwelcome foray into spoken word (A Space Boy Dream). Such minor missteps are rare and easily overlooked in the wake of a flawless song like Ease Your Feet Into The Sea. I'm writing from Boston. The program director at WXRV has agreed to add B&S to the station playlist if he gets at least 100 legitimate requests to do so. WXRV specializes in sort of cool mellow rock and plays bands like Elliott Smith, Semisonic, Barenaked Ladies, Lucinda Williams,Peter Droge, Shawn Mullins, Dada, Neil Finn. They are the coolest station in Boston and currently locked in a head to head battle against the other so-called cool station WFNX (which refuses to play B&S but has alannis morrissette in heavy rotation). Please go to the following website and fill out the on-line survey and request they add B&S to the playlist. You'll have to pretend you live in boston or they won't count it. Also, when listing music you listen to besides B&S, please make sure it fits the XRV playlist or they will ignore your request. That means no posting Marilyn Manson and Tool! At the top of my current list as far as "booty music" is Massive Attack's "Mezzanine" (mainly cause of the Liz Fraser songs)...Cure's "Disintegration" is up there too...and Tricky's "Maxinquaye." also, I'm new to the list. Hi Smutty Ones, Merci millefois a cher Philippe and also great big thanks to Jake (Jake?..Oh my God they killed Kenny!) for the tape that arrived yesterday. I haven't had time to listen to it all yet as my daughter got to it first so I could only get to hear some in the car today. (Can't wait for side two and the first hearing of some of the unreleased stuff. Then I can be a genuine poser too :) )However the tune of Century of Fakers still did its amazing hair on end trick and I enjoyed the breathless rush through Poupee de Cire, Poupee de Son. Love to Isobel and hope she's up and galloping at full tilt again soon. Speaking of people being up in the saddle again its nice to see a couple of lewd and lascivious posts from dear HoneyPaul. Afore-mentioned first born hired Boogie Nights last night and I realised that all that talk of gigantic telescopes is just a poorly conceived cover story for Honey's real job, and that the character of Dirk Diggler is firmly based on him. Get well to you too. (Daren't say "soon", 'cause I know a bit about living with someone with ME. But it will happen in the end. Especially if you concentrate on the smuttier bits of life!) Love to all. Even when faced with 4 or 5 digests a day I can't bring myself to just delete any unread.
