Must be my wife's influence... I remember when I was 18, I used to say, "Geez, in 2000, I will be 36. Oh man, that seems so old. (And, as a stupid 18 year old, I didn't really realize that I would actually be 35 at 1/1/00, and not 36 for another month. BUT I don't want this to be an excuse for a flame war about the start date of the millenium (2000 or 2001) -- everybody knows that the first century had 99 years, and the rest of them one-upped by going to 100 years...so, to me, 2000 is it.) But, not to waste any more bandwidth on non-list-stuff. The subtitle of this note is, "it's good to be the King of something", especially when you can spread the gospel. Not to go into too much detail, but I work in marketing for a very large airline in the US. One thing I do every month is I review and approve the audio programming we play on our flights. Well, since I've had this responsibility, I've done a few subversive things to bring a little spice into the programs, like trying to get an alternative channel set up, and some other interesing stuff. (Nov/Dec, we're looking at Landmark albums, which include "London Calling", a favorite from my youth...) But, just this week, I was reviewing the listing for January/February, and saw the same old crap on the alternative channel...some MTV yahoos that I don't like and don't listen to...so, one call to the vendor, and, zap, Dirty Dream #2 is appearing in Jan/Feb! (I would toss something from IYFS in, but the album is too old to fit into the format...) Hopefully, amidst that other pop dross, it will stand out and sell albums. (Yes, David and Katrina, our vendor does make all appropriate payments!) Sinister: not as sad as dostoyevsky.

i used to think the above line was "not as fat as dostoyevsky". ;) anyway, i was going to write about how i got my first flame from someone on the list today. i'd like to point out to new people that there's no point in paying attention to private flames. private constuctive criticism, but someone who wants to inform you that you smell like "knat's piss" probably isn't anyone worth listening to. ;) today i bought the ep. i made a special trip out to the record store to pick it up. i'm listening to it right now. i know where the summer goes is better when stuart murdoch is bopping up and down right in front of you, but otherwise i like it. ;) i ran a lot of errands this afternoon, including buying a record player. i didn't mean to buy, i already have one though it skips sometimes and i don't like it too much. but there's a presbyterian church about two blocks from me. it's a beautiful church, one of the really old ones built with large brown stones that has pretty stained glass windows inside, the ornate type. they're going to have handel's messiah there on sunday, perhaps i'll go if i don't have any projects to do. er, ok, i digressed pretty badly there. anyway, in the churchyard, was a man in the kilt playing bagpipes. i'm not necessarily a huge fan of bagpipes, but he was playing beautifully. i got my lunch and sat on one of the little benches and watched him play, despite the intermittent car alarms and honks. christmas time in the city is soul crushing, it's loud and noisy and full and cruel. so sometimes the little beautiful things are more important then than at any other time. well, as to how i got the record player, there was a craftsfair at the church, so i was going to look for a christmas gift for my mom, but i ended up going downstairs to look at the fleamarket type stuff instead. hehe just heard the gate and it isn't half bad. this is a rather mellow ep. perhaps i'll listen to it while getting down with my bad self. ;) oh, and any girls of about 18 or 19 who were serious about acting in my films (you have to be free and able to get downtown aroudn 2pm on tuesday *or* thursday of this coming week) *please* write me. xox megan mkl206(a)is8.nyu.edu visit the magnetic fields web page at: http://www.dissemination.com/megan/magneticfields/ +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Hey all- I've been reading people's (mostly negative) opinions about "The Gate" and I'm confounded! I just bought the "This Is Just a Modern Rock Song" EP...I like it a lot, and my ABSOLUTE favorite is "The Gate." I never thought that Isobel could write a song that's AS GOOD as Stuart's best songs. I dig "Is It Wicked Not to Care?" but this song is amazing, possibly my favorite from this TBWTAS-era... Just thought I'd share... I am going to apologize to the whole list for putting you all through this. I was wrong, dead wrong. I read toooooo much into the statement. ::Hides in shame:: I hate starting little things on lists, I never seem to. I feel like such a fool now. I thought he was correcting me about my knowledge of belle and sebastian in some way, that I when I wrote that nasty email I still couldn't figure out. I've been abused on other lists because of this so many times. So I wrote to him personally and apologized and now I feel I should apologize to the list, because it was rude of me. I'm just in a terrible mood from a little trouble this morning that completely wasted my time. Sorry JJ again!!! I will go back to lurking. hey kids I'm seeing Billy Bragg tonight, and I'm wondeirng if those of you who've seen him on this tour can tell me about how long his set is. I should have asked this days ago, ack. Also was the rest of his US tour part of some Jade Neptune benefit - what exactly is Jade Neptune benefit anyways?? Also there's the Javits Center in Dublin (in northside as well, but very close to the bridge!) and Javits Center in NYC. Are they related, I've always wondered. Are there other Javits Centers in other major cities? I personally prefer to say "The Jarvis Center" instead of "The Javits Center" but that's just me. With the B&S references to supermarkets, I'm wondering if they'll ever write more songs related to the office-supply superstores (which are strong at least in the US, not sure if they're as prolific in the UK) - does anyone in this list work in the grocery or office supply industries? I was told that the US supermarkets sell diapers and baby products as loss-leaders, so I'm wondering if it's the supermarkets that take the loss, or if they pass the loss to the manufacturers. I was told from an office supply manufacturer that office supply shops sell paper clips super-cheap, but they do'nt take the loss, it's the manufacturers (mainly ACCO, Mead, and the other major vendors) who are forced to sell paper clips at a loss. He mentioned how he hates selling paper clips but he is forced to carry them in his catalog to offer the full-rnage of office-supply products. Sinister: movements

I used to spend a lot of time thinking about movements, wishing I was more a part of one. Beat, Mod, Punk; Imagist, Modernist, Confessional (well, not Confessional)... anything. Then I started thinking I'd start my own movement, an anti-movement saying "Fuck all this GenX shit." Then after many drunken "conventions" in bars we realized that an anti-movement movement is really more redundant than clever. So now I think fuck it all. We're all individuals, just like everyone else. Yes I like to hang out with people who wear the same type of footwear and have more or less the same social and artistic concerns, but what does it all mean? Nothing. The world goes on, regardless of attempts to change it: all we can do is work on improving our relationship to the world. Sorry I'm not very articulate, but I've had my slightly hungover head in several books all morning.
