As Andy said:

>and steve lamacq was worse than ever last night. i've
>decided he must die...
Saw something the in Independent yesterday looking at what happens next
now the Britpop bubble bursts. Lamacq's great insight was to say that one thing
that may happen is the rise of "commercial anti-pop like Belle & Sebastian".
No problem with the "commercial" bit but "anti-pop"? This is just
unnacceptable as far as I am concerned. In what sense is B&S anti-pop?
Anti-pop is Celine Dion, Bush, Ocean Colour Scene, Kula Shaker, Elton John,
bloody Perfect Day. Pop is All Saints, pop is Aqua, pop is Belle & Sebastian.
Where's the problem in that...?
<I withdraw all this if Lamacq is using the term in the way that 'anti-pope' was
used historically - that is 'alternative and possibly rightful'. But I suspect he
isn't.>
Lyrics...can anyone tell me what relationship B&S lyric sheets have to the
actual songs? Have you noticed they are almost always subtly different from
the songs themselves. Are the printed lyrics an earlier incarnation of the song?
Are the band playing games with our listening pleasure? Or are the written
lyrics a "listesque" mishearing of the actual song by some Jeepster minion?
Does anyone know??

I think rock'n'roll by definition -- or at least good/great rock'n'roll -- is
that it is the music of being young. That very heady time when something can
be very powerful and exciting, and things touch you very deeply. It's music
of rebellion and freedom.
Something in the music of a particular band or of a particular song or style
reaches what you feel inside but maybe can't quite articulate. And you say
"YES!!" and for that moment you feel less alone or unsure, all's right with
the world, and you can fly on that. That's very close to heavenly...
That's why so many different genres fall under that "rock'n'roll" heading --
it's all so personal, what one is feeling or needing at a particular time of
life. There are bands that are loved by younger kids because they touch
those 13 and 14 year old insecurities -- those bands get dismissed by others
who have maybe "gone beyond" those things. But those little schoolgirl
crushes on pretty rock boys are very valid and useful at that time of life.
There's metal for those who need to yell "F--- the World," in one way, and
bands like Pearl Jam or whatever that deal with the perception of being alone
and apart. Scorn me if you will, but I really like Pearl Jam because I can
remember that raw emotion. I can understand exactly how that music touches
people. It's like a cosmic shriek or something. And if you can tap into
that and be a part of it during the song, it's like a great letting go.
The very best bands of any of the "sub-genres" touch a universal chord -- no
matter how old you are or where you are in your life, you can identify with
the emotion, whether you're currently living it or remembering it.
Oh, I've gone on and on, just to say that I think music is emotional, and
emotions can certainly be heavenly, when they aren't a living hell...

Regarding the Sessions at West 54th thing...BandS were supposed to be on on
Dec. 27th, but now, in checking their web site (www.sessionsatwest54th.com)
it looks like they've been replaced with an encore broadcast of kd lang. Is
it time to start a letter writing campaign?

i am very grateful for the lengthy and detailed discussions upon "rock 'n'
roll" and its relative proximity to heaven.
however, i feel that certain arguments quickly became
tied to an attempt to distinguish between rock and roll and pop. this, at
least in my mind at the time of conception, was not the intended focus.
i took it in its broader and more nebulous sense - music. the reason i say
this is becase of its context; it is of course a lyric from Aztec Camera's
"Somewhere in my Heart". i may be wrong, but i feel that the intensity
and dynamism of this particular section of the song transcends the issue
differentiation that was so eloquently, but perhaps wrongly, dwelt on.
if indeed, music is to remembered as "little moments", i believe the value
of the moment should be respected. i believe that during the
moment when this particular lyric was penned, and then fused with the
music,
the moment was
all-encompassing
and universal,
panoramic and
devoid
of judgement.
in any way
perhaps we should wonder why "this ain't the planet of sound"

Oh geez, I agreed with much of what you said, but I can't really buy into
this statement. First of all, I don't see any point in confining any art,
including popular art, to one emotion. That's pretty stifling. I think, if
anything, Rock 'n' roll is closer to alienation by definition. Secondly,
there are examples throughout the past to contradict the notion that it need
to be happy music to be Rock. Bob Dylan was at his best and rockin'est in
the 60s when he was smart, angry, and full of contempt. Brian Wilson was at
his best when he was sad with songs like "Caroline No" and "I Just Wasn't
Made For These Times". And Westerberg, he was at his best when he was happy,
furious and depressed. Now that he's completely happy he pretty much sucks.
I think Lester Bangs pretty much nailed what Rock 'n' Rolls' all about and
how it relates to "heaven" when he wrote,"The politics of rock 'n' roll, in
England or America or anywhere else is that a whole bunch of kids want to be
fried out of their skins by the most scalding propulsion they can find, for a
night they can pretend is the rest of their lives, and whether the next day
they go back to work in shops or boredom on the dole or American TV doldrums
in Mom 'n' Daddy's living room nothing else can cancel the reality of that
night in the revivifying flames when for once if only then in your life you
were blasted outside of yourself and the monotony which defines most life
anywhere at any time, when you supped on the lightning and nothing else in
the realms of the living or dead mattered at all."

this is entirely unrelated to the band, i apologise if its irrelevance
is an abuse. Its just that i have a friend who is a
first-year sociologist at Exeter. He has never replied to one of my
Emails, and i find it distressing. The cheeky favour i ask is if any one
has the time to waste, could they Email O.R.E.Brann(a)exeter.ac.uk and tell
him to email Jamie. sorry.
ps, any one is at a Royal Holloway, or has ever contacted an undergrads
there by Email, could they explain how you locate addresses, becuause i
can't do it at all.

Err....
Since some of you have got all excited about record collector and
assumed it was a tigermilk thing it isn't. It was just a thing about
the French TV series with a picture of a record sleeve entitled 'Belle
et Sebastien et les oiseaux'. I thought it was cute, that's all.
Love Tag (tired and with three film reviews to write by tomorrow
morning)
Oh, by the way. I don't buy record collector, it was shown to me by
someone else.
