[Keith Watson] It's a nice idea but to download the whole album at 44K a second makes : 44*60 = 2640K per minute 2640 * 45 = 118800K = 118 Megabytes, which at a probable maximum throughput of around about 3K a second (at least in the UK) would be around about 11 hours to download, which could wind up being rather costly - again, this'll be in the land of non-free local telephone calls - so if you had to buy it (which, lets face facts, would be only fair), you'd have to pay another 13 quid or so on top of the actual price of the album. Granted that'd be loads less than the 200 quid asking price at the moment, but still. Chris told me last christmas that they were going to release it on CD soon, however soon that he told me they weren't going to release it in the forseeable future. The reason for this I reckon, is basically, the mystique that having a brilliant unavailable album creates, it generates so much interest in the band it's untrue, I'm sure they will eventually release it, but it just seems that it's more beneficial to them not to release it. Yesterday I was in Tower Records Picadilly trying to buy "3,6,9 Seconds of Light" (well nobody told me it wasn't comming out then). Obviously they didn't have it which made me sad. But they were playing "Lazy Line Painter Jane" as I entered the building which made me very happy after a day in the office. As I was leaving I was struck by how long the queue was and how odd it was to see a long line of middle-aged Japanese men here in a thrusting-young-buck music store. And the were all buying handfulls of Elton's single - 5 or 6 at a time! It was a thing that made me go 'hmmm'. xx john ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . Belle and Sebastian 3,6,9 Seconds of Light EP Released October 13th 1997 Featuring the songs: Century of Fakers Le Pastie De La Bourgeoisie Beautiful Put The Book Back On The Shelf "Hello, I've been asked to write a Press Release for this, our latest record. I have never written one before. I have never seen any of our previous Press Releases. I don't have access to one, so I can't copy it. I'm in the group, I play the guitar. I assume this goes out to journalists at the newspapers and the music press. I have not read that much on the group previously, but I believe we have done quite well with regards to exposure in the press: mostly positive, occasionally ecstatic and sometimes quite derisory. I don't care, I love it all. It's great reading about your group in the press, including the inevitable inaccuracies (but that somehow only adds to the fun). One thing though... Much has been made of our unwillingness to do interviews and be photographed. I don't understand it. During the early summer you couldn't open a magazine without someone in the bands mug and words of wisdom staring back up at you. I suppose if we get perceived as awkward, contrary, Scottish Indie Popsters, that's the way it goes. I'm not complaining, it's only Showbiz and i'm quite grateful for all the attention. Right now we are making more records and attempting to get better at playing gigs. I know we are a shambles, but we've only played about ten shows and the gaps between songs etc are caused through ineptitude. We could never be deliberately contemptuous of an audience and we are trying to get better - HONEST! Which brings me to our latest record. It's really good, and I like it a lot. Track 2 is my favourite, although wee Chris on keyboards thinks it sucks. Track 4 is a really good song, which I think we could have done a lot better, although Mark at the record company went wild for it. Well, so much is in the ear of the beholder I guess. I've just done a few more small updates to the site. 1- Lyrics for the 3..6..9 Seconds Of Light e.p. Well one of the songs anyway. The others will be on the site when the e.p. is released. 2- updated site map. 3- updated merchandise and orderform pages. (as we've now got LARGE sized t-shirts in both colours.). Sinister: Free Tea on the Glasgow bus

First I realise anyone's noticed is when the hostess lady on the bus from London to Glasgow taps me on the shoulder. I can't hear what she's saying because my personal stereo's too loud. I take my headphones off and look sheepishly at her, wiping my eyes and trying to smile. She's made me a cup of tea because I look so upset. She's noticed I've been looking out of the window crying for nearly an hour and she's worried about me. I don't think she really understands when I explain that the reason I'm crying is not because of any crisis but because I'm listening to such lovely songs. I am, of course, listening to Belle and Sebastian. And so I find yet another reason to love this band. Brad ,I Ordered a Mazzy Star cd single from them and was very impressed with their service.They were fast and send order status's by e-mail. I too am impressed with their good taste.That's one of the wonders of the net I can order rare european cd singles from Italy and have them sent to California in a short time. Sinister: peel and b&s

must chime in with stuff about peel and b&s. yes, radcliffe did get behind the band first and did a good job (strangely he played 'you're such a baby' first before playing 'state...' to death) with the sessions and all. but when peel had to play 'state...' during last years festive fifty he said something about having to borrow the radcliffe show's copy which he'd sent to them in the first place. and no, b&s aren't really a peel band, they're a bit too soft for him i think. yep, peel plays a lot of stuff that some people won't like. but you get used to it and end up liking it in the end. also, if you look at radio 1 these days you'll find a lot of specialist shows (the rap show, the jungle show, andy kershaw's thing, the evening session to some extent) that are there to showcase music that was formerly only available on peel's show. also, there's a lot more to peel than the music he plays... oh, and try the 'breeze block' section of mary ann hobbs' show (12 til 1 weekdays). (all these things are available via real audio on the radio 1 web page for you curious foreigners, www.bbc.com/radio1 ) um, and two blocks down from the nyc gig there were murals on the walls eulogising diana. i thought i'd done good skipping the country the day before elton john was due to sing and missing the 4 channels worth of funeral coverage only to get to america and find that all 7 channels that i had access too were full of it. and did jeffrey archer appear as much on english tv as he did on the american coverage? arsehole. (almost as bad as the american presenter speaking to somebody from coventry 'which is in the north of england'.) andy who did actually think of shouting out 'candle in the wind' but luckily only an hour after the gig in the car home. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . Just got today's Melody Maker and Steve Lamacq devotes half his column to the B&S shows in New York. 'It was probably a bit like this when Bob Dylan played down the road many years ago', he says, reverentially. He implies that their American label, the Enclave, have gone 'belly up' (is this true?) so consequently the place was full of industry types.
