Today I wndered into my local ultra-conservative record emporium, a place where George Michael is (quite rightly) considered the epitome of cool, and do you know what was playing? Yes, that's right,"If You're Feeling Sinister" has finally made it to this remote backwater! It was deeply groovy moment. I stayed until the end, unable to believe they'd leave it on all the way through, but they did. As I was leaving the kindly shopkeeper was scratching his head over the CD booklet, so I think he might be a convert. Definitely the nicest thing to have happened in that shop since Manowar did a press conference, which the lead singer started by telling the bemused punters that he had just got out of bed with a girl with (and I quote), "the most enormous ass you ever saw!" I think she has mentioned Belle & Sebastian being played a few times at FBI and Madchester. I can't remember what they played, I'll ask her tonight. But there was a few instances of this before DoW's was released. It could have been 'Dylan in the movies'. The last time I was at Evol I asked for B&S, but the DJ just looked at me blankly. I'll have to come along to Egg sometime. It's on at the Attic isn't it? When is it on and what other bands get played? [Keith Watson] He's a tosspot - never mind, he's given up playing the stuff he's actually into in order to make loadsamoney. Paul plays B+S regularly (he needs however to stop wimping out and playing the same ones every week). [Keith Watson] I gave Paul a copy a few weeks ago but he's claimed that it's a shit copy, my stereo's like 20 years old - so perhaps it might be a good idea if you did him one. have sent 3 posts to the list in the last couple of days and only one seems to have made it to the archive. which is odd. the first was about my parents and whilst my mum generally approves my dad's pretty clueless. as expected. Oh, and the latest band to follow the B&S path to fame and fortune, Snow Patrol (aka Polar Bear) sound absolutely nothing like B&S; they reminded me more of the Longpigs, except that they had some tunes. were opening and i went into Missing down by the arches wasn't it? And i picked up two copies, one for me, one for my girlfriend. I got back to [Keith Watson] Odd that, as I'll completely agree, I had exactly the same experience as you with the Stone Roses, listened to it for about the next two years non stop, it was bloody great - probably the best album I've ever heard. I did however have the same experience, just over a year ago with Tigermilk, and it was Missing, down by the arches, that I bought that in... It's also, as I remember, something Chris Keyboards was comparing it to, he reckoned, much as they were good, it was never as good as the Stone Roses, even although I told him I reckoned Tigermilk was the first record since the Stone Roses to affect me in the same sort of way (not that there haven't been a load of brilliant records in between, but MBV, talk talk, Fear of a black planet and the KLF don't really work the same way), and I reckon lots would agree. It's also, I would venture, the best album of the 90's, for me, overtaking the four previously mentioned records, DJ Shadow, Underworld, Ultra Vivid Scene etc. etc. Cheers, Keith. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . Greetings, I am in a similar situation. I think that the Scottish accent spoken along to music sounds cool. They could be speaking gibberish, and probably are, but it still manages to sound cool. In Ireland at any rate the women think that the Scottish accent is very sexy, whatever that has to do with anything... enough! Another band with that kind of song is Prolapse, including male and female spoken word, so see you Jimmy, go and listen to Prolapse for a while, Graham Ps. Does anyone else think that the beginning of the chorus of "Judy and the dream of Horses" sounds like Abba's "SOS"..... "So if you need me darling blah blah blah blah, SOS!"
