hi all, alix's story about her walkman being stolen reminded me of a time when i loaned my cure tape "standing on the beach" to a boy i barely knew (this was about 6 years ago, now...geez, i feel old) and he didn't give it back for ages and ages, and when it was approaching 6 months that he had it, i asked if maybe i could have it back and it turned out that he had been mugged and his walkman had been stolen with my tape in it. and there i was thinking that he had fallen in love with it and just didn't want to give it up. although there are much better cure albums to adore (oh, i should stop myself here, but i still can't get enough of disintegration or wish), i was pleased that he showed some interest in a band that i liked. the cure was really my first big music obsession, i bought one of their albums because a boy i was crushing on at the time liked them, and i ended up getting sucked in and buying album after album and teeshirts and seeing them in concert and tracking down rare recordings...i went a little nutty, and although i've never been that way about any band since (i think everyone is limited to just one obsessive band reaction) b+s gives me that same feeling, of there being a whole world out there that i don't know about that's better than what's here. it's like all of a sudden things were in technicolor from black and white, like the wizard of oz, where you don't really see what's missing and then one thing changes and your whole life seems to have been retouched and misty but clear at the same time. i'm rambling now, but i'm having a slightly sentimental moment after ahren telling me that he'll miss me over new year's, since he's going to montreal and i'm not. <sigh> that boy is just such a cutie. i got the most amazing book for christmas, it's just called 'plastic' and it's about the whole history of plastics and how they're used and they're totally necessary now, and the different people that discovered their different uses by adding camphor and stuff to make them more pliable. i'm such a geek, i know, but it's the coolest thing! and my family was saying, "so you really wanted this book? you weren't just joking?". i also got 'girl goddess #9' by francesca lia block (of weetzie bat fame) and a book about jeopardy! that gives stories about alex trebek and contestants. hey, my mom got it at a library book sale for 50 cents, don't knock it. oh, and an electric toothbrush! whirr, whirr and my teeth are sparkly! that's also been so much fun that i now brush my teeth, like, four times a day. but there's nothing wrong with that. i think this will be my last post of the year, i feel like i should be writing up some sort of "favourite records" list, but for now i'm just going to swoop out of here with an evil "bwa-ha-ha" and a twirl of my cape. every girl needs a cape, i tell ya. even if it's only made from a furry blanket. toodles, jessicaxo ps. i couldn't help but notice that i'm slipping on the list crush poll. that may be because you all didn't see me in my ice princess coat, but come on, people. imagination! just close your eyes and see what happens. and then vote for me and massage my ego. virtually, of course. who knows what sorts of germs you can pick up out there. pps. party like it's 1999! oh, please, you knew you were thinking it. +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Since we still have a few months before the new lp is to be released I thought that there must be a way for us Sinisterines to entertain ourselves. Imagine a Belle and Sebastian board game--B&Sopoly, if you will. For one to eight players. Recomended for people 16 and up, preferably with the life outlook of an 8 year old, the mind of a 15 year old, and the weariness and sorrow of the human race. For your game piece choose either a fox, a camera, a bus, a dog-on-wheels, a piece of cake, an Elvis (whatever that is), a line, or a horse. Instead of pieces of real estate to buy as in Monopoly, this board has places that figure in the band's history and songs. Featured sites are the churchhouse, Kelingrove Park, the coffeehouse the members met, Union Chapel, Gloucester Road, Manchester Town Hall, Liverpool, West 54th. Street studio, etc. No "Go Directly to Jail" cards in this game; it would be replaced with "Chat With Fans on IRC", or "Sit Down For Proper Interview". (However, if you the player decide not to show up to either, no one can make you.) There would be other cards to be drawn in the course of the game. Examples: "Return to Manchester because Isobel left her rockstop", or "Lose turn while searching for Lawrence from Felt in London". No money, play or real, would exchange hands during the coure of the game--that would just be vulgar to sensitive sensibilities. Unless of course, you draw a card that offers you the chance to buy a copy of _Tigermilk_. Then it is a free for all. The objective of the game? There is none. Move your piece around the board for a few hours until you lose interest to do something more worthwhile, like taking a nap, or writing a story or song. Who else would like to play? Sinister: Pastels/Tindersticks in relation to B&S

First replies from a new member to the list: PASTELS -- I agree with whoever said they all sounded the same and weren't anything special. They've got a new "remix" album out which for some reason I bought, and while the songs on it do sound different, it's just a lot of looping/scratching/sampling stuff, which I'm getting real bored by. TINDERSTICKS -- Both albums have their strong songs. They've also got a live disc out they did with a full orchestra that came as a bonus disc with the second album, and then was sold separately -- I think. I actually think that would be the best starting point. But -- be warned. They're a band I allways wanted to like more than I've ever been able to. While they use a lot of similar instrumentation, I find the Tinderstick's vocalist hard to listen to. He sings in a very deep, dreary monotone -- the opposite of B & S, who manage to be touching but also uplifting, in part because of the vocals. I would also submit that the lyrics don't touch B&S's. And, that on B&S's best songs, the melodies are much stronger. Unfortunately, I don't put a lot of songs on TBWTAS in that category. But I'm sure that's a point that's been hashed over quite a bit on this list. Sinister: he's lost in the mountains

Hello sweet list! How are you? Good Christmas..and still enjoying? I find these days are better in fact,cos now you don't have to rush to get all these little errands done...a most strange occurcence,i spent like 45 minutes picking out some lovely pairs of knitted knee socks..and when i came home? not in the bag! oh well,mischeif elves or something,for sure. i went cross-country skiiing for the first time today..and you know how when you were little you'd play little imaginary games? well i did all the time...always in the forest,i'd pretend i was a fairy named firefly (or something like that) and that i had fire powers! well today i got magically transported back into that world..skiiing throught the treacherous forests,where i have to make it before dusk,to the mountaintop,where wee stuart is being held captive by war-lords! AND along the way i have to be extra careful,as the wolves are running amuck..but i am guided by wee stuarts sweet song and voice (and cigarette burning,the billowing smoke guides me..plus stuart knows smoke signals) and i've falled throught the vile field of ice-encrusted weeds,and i am cut...but soon i will be reunited with stuart,his little swiss snow-maiden and i will kill the war-lords by piercing them with my ski poles (right throught the heart) and wrapping up stuart's body in a tartan blanket,carrying him on my back while i ski down the glistening hills..back to the cabin. mmmm! i think i will turn it into a short story..i think you could get some great description in there... tiny hands enfolding, skin translucent and blue. anyways..as my brother is visiting,i got a great shock about belle and sebastian fans as seen through others eyes? you mean were NOT cool? i always thought this was just a joke...well i don't know so much if it's belle and sebastian,but he told me when i go to college i might turn into a 'romulant'...gathering in DC? wearing tight trousers? listening to the make-up? (who are the make-up?i'm getting these crazy genres thrown at me and i don't understand) long pointy side-burns? (oh my,i'm going to grow side-burns!) i'm afraid dear hearts! or is this just a thing on the side..that has grown a strange stereotype..like in Father Keith's FAQ? "are they twee?" "no they rock" Father Miller? do you know what this is all about? Romulants!? does romulant mean you get TOO wimpy on that P!O!P scale? Sinister: Holiday Hijinx

Hello List, Been a while since I've posted, but I've enjoyed very much *not* working, so I haven't done much at all in the way of work. Firstly, regarding Lesley Jo's idea of a B&S-opoly, I am one step ahead. I had my mom get me a "Make-Your-Own-opoly" game for Christmas. I bet you can only guess to what evil ends I had her do this >=) When Megan gets back from Russia in a bit I will create the game with her, and then have some friends over who do like the band (that will be difficult since most people I know in Athens are not B&S fans) and play it. Perhaps I'll take pictures... I made my Belle & Sebastian tape. If anyone is seriously interested in the tracklisting, you can e-mail me, but I don't think that anyone is quite that obsessed. It's fun though, and I lurve the cover. I found out that yet another of my former high school friends is a B&S fan, and tomorrow I'm going thrift shopping with him and another one, so we'll probably play the tape and make a day of it. (Sigh) if only I could find more friends at college who liked them... On the subject of Top Ten of '98 lists, I have discovered a rather innocuous way of doing this. Sinister: sinister ministers

I've come back from a little holiday trip from New Jersey to Ohio to Chicago, and, of course, back again to New Jersey. Now, I had thoughts to continue on west, just driving the car in a Kerouac-fantasy, but I was given an electric tea kettle as a present and I quite looked forward to trying it out. If only the car had an electrical outlet... I was at my brother's house; he is a minister. Only three people have said to me "you must have heard it a hundred times, but 'if you're feeling sinister...'" and more curious, the three were all French. I went to his church service on Sunday, and he preached about Teletubbies. However, he said they were neither the new Christ and antiChrist--rather he said "Again! Again!" and something about the Bible. But he had to do that; it's his job. He gave me a poster of the Spice Girls and another with Jesus on his houseboat--yes, apparently Jesus does have a houseboat! Sinister: that point...

All-- Thinking today, as I hold all the EPs I didn't have already (the first 3), that i just received via mail, I realize something quite incredible-- wouldn't you agree that perhaps the best 'feeling' with music is that point where the music is incredibly fresh, new and exciting. You know, before it becomes something you've had for a while. Don't you wish you could rediscover an album all over again? I wish I could rediscover Quadrophenia, or Sinister all over again. There's that point where you must sit back in your comfy chair, close your eyes and just open your ears. well, since it looks like slim pickins in the world of sinister, i decided to write to the list. lesleyJo, this is my final weak attempt at the ring. ;) i decided to carry on the recent trend of telling you all what i got for christmas. hmmmm, some clothes, stuff for my house, a stuffed fox :) , the biography of Nick Drake and a lovely book of Edna St Vincent Millay poems of which this is my favorite: **** my candle burns at both ends, it will not last the night. but ah, my foes, and oh, my friends, it gives a lovely light! **** it makes me happy, it does. 30 more minutes and i can leave work!! i am so utterly bored i want to scream. i feel like stripping off my clothes and streaking the whole building, waving my arms wildly above my head. HEY! Kevin in Accounting!! Sinister: thoughts of a sober mind

hi. i'm bored, so i thought i would write. not that i would recommend that any of you lot try the same thing, you should be ashamed of yourselves. not that there aren't people who do that already, right mr miller? he pretends he throws parties for the van halen family when i'm quite certain that it's just him and his dog belle romping through the pyrenees. i don't think i'll lose any of my validity when you realize that i cannot spell said mountain range. sigh. oh well, that was the funny part of this email. now for the tragic part. because today i'm all about giving you, my lovely audience, a little bit of everything. scroll down for the t&a section. anyway, i really *do* have nothing to say. it is one of the oddities of college life that you spend three months being moderately busy, one month being suicidally busy, and the next month sitting on your ass in russia. though never for a moment should any of you think i'm lacking in employment. why, my days are filled with fun and history. why today i spent the morning playing a car racing game. they all have stupid titles so i seldom pay attention to that part. but one of the courses goes through *scotland*. another goes through *moscow*. is there some great cosmic connection? there's also the one for *easter island* but i'm not sure how that fits in. question, does anyone bother to read my posts? i'm being a waste of cyberspace right now. i would apologize but that would be a nice tihng to do and i'm working on being grrr tough so i can't do that. so who's coming to new york in the following year? i am for one. i'm working on being everyone's tour guide, though i've become antisocial in my old age. i remember the days when i'd talk to anyone who liked belle and sebastian, now i only talk to a select few and they have to know the secret handshake first. in order to learn the secret handshake you must be on the list for ten years, then fast for seven more, then write a song for belle and sebastian and give it to them, all the while pretending that you are doing no such thing and therefore keeping the facade alive. it's all very simple. there's this wonderful toystore i found the other day, it has stuffed foxes. i could throw one outside and yell fox in the snow, but no one here speaks english anyway so they'd probably just tackle me and send me to lubyanka. it's a museum now so i could be an exhibit. the store also had a life sized stuffed reindeer. he's my new best friend. i love you all. xoxox megan +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Sinister: the same old story

it's all grey-ey brown outside today and there's really pathetic half-melted snow on the ground. oh, woe is me. well, not really, but i am bored.. and i feel so far away from the sinister list these days - the digests seem so sparse, everyone is off holiday galavanting while i am still here with my trusty computer. ahh, the life! i read nick bantock's "the venetian's wife" and there are all these delightful emails in it. as well as those beautiful collages, so so pretty. i got 2 pairs of pyjamas for christmas, among other things. a new black diary for all my smut too! yes. sigh, i myself am dateless for new years.. well, some of my friends are insisting that i come with them to a party being held by a former high school companion of mine and, pretty much there is no way that i'm going to go. as much fun as high school was (in some respects :) ) why would i want to even vaguely relive it by surrounding myself with former school mates? so if any toronto sinisterines are wanting to do something on that magically overrated night, please let me know and save me from an otherwise night of torture.. hey, i sound rather down in this post, don't i? i'm actually.. well, hrrm. i guess i am feeling kind of down and i'm forcing it all on you :) i just want it to be summertime and sunny, i want it to be summertime so that i can travel around.. i had a belle and sebastian dream a week ago. i don't remember it well, but when i woke up i knew i had dreamt about them. teriiii ps.. i need new zines to read.. if anyone would like to read, please contact me? thank yoooo your eyes are long vermont roads/with a tacky song on the radio/and your eyes are toothless young men/in tenessee in the rain again/ the magnetic fields/ http://members.tripod.com/~meltingsnow/ +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net".
