Sinister: everyone avoids me like a cyclone ranger

oh oh oh (or is it ho ho ho?). we have pop competitions and christmas jokes and stories of isobel as a dog. how exciting. is it possible to live vicariously through things that don't really exist? i think it as and, as such, i shall. earlier today while enjoying my fourteenth minty cigarette i realized that if a certain sinister listee who works down the way from me were to get on the roof of her building she could wave to me and do little dances while i smoke my cigarettes. how nice would that be? we could even get some of those little short-distance walkie-talkies and hold conversations. oh oh oh. let me think here, i've kept the list up to date with my lunches, an inventory of my desk as well as my addictions to various snack products. i'm completely out of uninteresting things to tell you people about. completely. i'm either going to have to start making things up or i'm going to have to take a creative writing class to present myself in a more inspiring manner. yeah. i need to think on that. well, i've got my passport and my plane tickets to london but i still haven't figured out where i will stay or what i will do while i'm there. flying by the seat of my pants? no, just too lathargic to actually plan these things out. i'm sure i'll find someplace to stay and something to occupy my time. that's the way these things go, isn't it? ok, now i must depart for i have the urge, once again, to... um, i don't know. just an urge maybe. -kelly ryan mcguire ingrediants: water, sucrose syrup, glucose-fructose syrup, citric acid, natural flavors, salt, sodium citrate, monopotassium phosphate, ester gum +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Sinister: in a strange strange place

imagine yourself strapped into a tiny seat in the back of an airplane, waiting to fly from england's stansted airport back to the beautiful dutch city of maastricht in holland. you've finally stowed your carry-on in the much-too-small overhead compartment, the flight attendant is preparing to shell out those oh-so-delicious little peanut snacks, and they're playing something that amounts to mantovani meets the 101 strings on the plane's p.a. to soothe the passengers before take-off. sound familiar so far? thought so. now imagine the sounds of sting blaring away as he sings about legal aliens and englishmen in new york. strange, but - alright, it can happen. now imagine my face, as i'm turning the pages of my new q magazine (better than those in-flight mags, i tell ya), when what should sound out from that tape player they've got hidden somewhere between the loo and the cockpit, but - yes! - our very own belle and the boy sebastian with 'get me away from here, i'm dying'. phwaw! on a plane. klm at that. and isn't that just a trifle morbid? hmmm... so, dear sinisterites, at the risk of starting a random new thread of conversational hub-bub, i would like to know what the strangest place you have ever heard a b&s song played is. any takers? oh - and the flight attendant, who was not unattractive, didn't know where the tape came from. at least she waited till the song was over to demonstrate how to open and close my seatbelt... alex http://www.tobin.demon.nl

Yes! Someone finally mentions Prefab Sprout! I'd also suggest the Sprouts' Protest Songs, which was only released in the UK on Kitchenware records. It's not as good as the previously mentioned records but has several great pop songs, one of which is Life of Surprises. Also, the US release of Steve McQueen was re-titled Two Wheels Good (I have no idea why?), and it's still one of my all time favourites (it's up there with the Smiths' The Queen is Dead, MBV's Loveless, and the Tindersticks first album). The best song on this record has to be Bonny, which is a haunting "killing me softly" ode to a dead lover. This song continues to bring chills up my spine whenever I hear it. So there, go out and buy Prefab Sprout! Chi M. Sinister: Counting Acts

Hey kids, So now we have two official Isobel songs on recordings. Is it any coincidence that the phrase "counting acts" is featured in both of them? I can't for the life of me figure out what that is supposed to mean, though it obviously is pretty significant to Isobel. Am I missing something? Am I just dumb? Someone help me before I go INSANE(-r). On a lighter note, to whomever was talking about how touching "The Simpsons" can be, the episode where Bart sells his soul was just on. I think that one is, pound for pound, both the funniest and most heartbreaking episode of the lot. I have to sit really close to the television when it's on, but I can't breathe too roughly for fear of breaking the episode. In addition, it contains this classic exchange: LISA: Hmm. Pablo Neruda says that laughter is the language of the soul. BART (deadpan): I am familiar with the works of Pablo Neruda. It gets no better. Ahh well, back to studying.... Sinister: music stuff

1) I too am a musician-- well, a lapsed musician. I realized recently that playing music interferes with my writing poems, which is much more important to me, so the music has sort of had to go. But even though the answer to the question "What kind of musician are you?" is "A crap one" I still consider myself one. I play guitar, and sort of sing if I need to. With my acoustic guitar, my songs tend to sound like Palace or Smog or maybe Woody Guthrie (if I'm very lucky); with my electric they tend to sound like Ida, sonic youth, the cure, X, and jawbreaker. Band experiences very bad. 2) A few digests back someone referred to bands like the Sea and Cake, Low, Rex, Idaho, and Tortoise as mathrock. And I hate to split hairs and bicker about genres, but they're not, really. Sinister: Do they know it's Xmas time ?

I ordered the new Belle and Sebastian today. I am afraid i will not listen to THE GATE in Xmas time. It reminds me the last X-mas. That lovely Belle and Sebastian X-mas song Wave file. My computer "died" in july for some weeks and i LOST the file. Is there anyone here who has it ? Please, encoder it to REAL AUDIO and send me. Carlos Fernando sings this song with his lovely fragile voice. He's the singer of a cool Brazilian jazz band called Nouvelle Cuisine. Well... Noone wants to know about it. Did anyone watch/tape Alternative Nation last night? It was good. It had that peculiar Salako video, some great Pixies live stuff, Mercury Rev and possibly all of Modern Rock Song right at the beginning as I was trying to find a videotape to tape the programme, the bastards. Was it all of the song? I think they went to an advert break straight after it so it must have been long. It's not a very interesting video though is it. The Eels "Electro-Shock Blues" is indeed a great album whoever said that, it's beautfully arranged (with care rather than trying to be 'clever' I think) and is fairly optimistic despite being about bad things.
