I'm sorry, how could anyone possibly NOT love 'The Gate'? Just listen to that beautifully rolling chorus, ahhhh, 'tis adorable. And lyrically just as pretty too. As someone remarked disparagingly (although a higher compliment is hard to imagine) Isobel's vocals are very Heavenly/Talulah Gosh: but I'm a sucker for that so I'm probably biased. ... in fact, come to think about it, it's SUCH a cool song, it could almost be from 'Le Jardin de Heavenly' or 'Heavenly vs. Satan'. Yes, THAT good :) Nick (p.s. though having said all that 'I Know Where the Summer Goes' is of course even better.... :) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ And the sad part is..... Sorry for being a miserable young trout but I don't get Harry Hill at all. Appologies if I've offended anyone. Anyway, I'll keep this short as I've got the flu and I want to go home and lie down and sniff forlornly. Reid beat me too it by exclaiming: > Slow Graffiti is still one of my all-time favorites. Someone tell me I'm not crazy, please. Yes, I'm backing you up on this one, except I don't think it's two extra 'boy's but instead a strange, admittedly vocal, noise. I heard it on my Beat Patrol tape but I assumed it was (a) a fault in the tape or more likely (b) a problem in the mix that would be sorted out when it was released. Seems it's just another weird quirk though. I'll ask Struan next time I bump into him. Or maybe not. re- musicians I can play the geetar (quite well) and various other instruments (quite bad), but i've never thought of my self as a musician, and i never will until its stamped on my passport. I've given myself until march to make some sort of living out of my love for rocknroll, i want to idle my time away in cafes too, or is that pubs. I've just joined a new band, unfortunately the singer thinks he's Jarvis Cocker, and he wants me to play like Jonny Marr, i only do Joe Santiago i told him. It's only a matter of time before i'm out on my ear again. Sinister: Because he liked the sound of it

Oh, how happy am I? Damn happy. I'm walking past Two Way Pull records here in Chapel Hill yesterday, fully expecting that they wouldn't yet have their copies of TIGGERJAMMIES in, and what have they written on their "lo-fi marketing" chalkboard? This: "New Belle and Sebastian EP in...Yay!" Well, yay indeed! So I broke down their door (it was unlocked, but I like the drama) and demanded that they sell me one. And they had about 20 copies of it, 10 on CD, 10 on vinyl! This is about the best import service I've ever seen. I'm so impressed. Of course, now I'm going to have two copies when my copy from Jeepster arrives in the mail. But that's okay...one can live in my car the other can live in my bedroom, and when I find suitable parents for one of them, I'll gladly give it up. And speaking of cars, I've noticed that Modern Rock Song especially sounds so much better in my car. I don't know what it is, but as I was listening to it on the way home yesterday, I was beaming from ear to ear. Then when I listened to it in my bedroom last night, I still loved it, but it didn't have the same effect. "First listen effect" I figured. But then when I listened to it again this morning, I was whisked back to the heady, wonderful days of, um, yesterday. Anyway, Modern Rock Song=stunning. I still think that it has even more potential (if you can believe that), but it does sound phenomenal. Does Stuarts voice sound a little weird to anyone? Stevie's voice sounds phenomenal. My favorite part is when he starts singing. ...Where the Summer goes: great melody. It's going to get stuck in my head a billion times over the course of the next few months. Some of Stuart's best lyrics in a long time, too. I'll have to listen to it a few more times to pick up the nuances. I don't mind The Gate so much. I guess it's one of those things where I can see both sides. I think it's a nice song, with a catchy melody and good arrangement, etc. But so far, there's not much that makes me want to go back to it over and over. Sinister: Ramblin' on my mind...

Hullo list Just throwing in my two cents on a variety of topics (which should end up costing me around $0.12, but what can you do). Anxiously awaiting the new EP... drive faster, Canada Post! Of course, I'll be tripping over it in every music store I go into now, and will be tortured by the fact that I shouldn't buy it since I've ordered a copy... Actually, I'm keener on getting my Sinister t-shirt... Do you have to create music to be a musician? I'm a pretty decent guitarist (also really bad drums/keys) with no creative outlets at the moment (read: no band), so I end up spending most of my time making weird skronky noises with my guitars. I do plan on getting a drum machine soon, though, which I'm hoping will help squeeze my creative juices... Sadly, I'm right-handed, but I'm also right-brained, which should count for something. Music I'd like to create would be a weird mix of B&S folk-pop, alt.country, classic Beatle-pop and Brit-indie-shoegazer drone. I think that'd sound pretty cool, but finding like-minded individuals has been kinda tough. Brushes with pop stardom? Well, this may not mean much to anyone without a Canadian passport, but I once ran into Hayden in a music store and he was buying a guitar amp that I sorta wanted. It's probably for the best, 'cause a) he had the money for it, and b) I think he'd do more with it than make skronky guitar noises. I've also ran into the Watchmen (Canucks again) at an East Side Marios and walked past Heather Nova (mmm...) in downtown Toronto. This was only a couple of blocks from where she was playing that night, so I don't know if that really counts as a surprise run-in. Boy With The Sex Device was chosen as second best album of the year by the arts editor of my unversity newspaper, but I think he was just trying to be as cool as me... :) Pop as a movement? I'm very suspicious of any band that tries to identify themselves with a media-created scene... I can't remember who it was, but I remember one American cock-rock band saying, "yeah, we're a grunge band..." Alarm, alarm! I like music that makes me happy, and most of it tends to be hyphenated pop. Y'know <Fill in descriptive>-pop. I prefer to think of the descriptive as just that - a description, not a manifesto or a movement or nothin'. Jus' good tunes, man. Anyways, I think that's enough rambling for now. Sinister: Meoldy Maker

Cor, Belle and Sebastian article in Melody Maker, interesting stuff so it is... What I've ascertained is that if the band weren't involved in this then they've got a pretty good mole letting them know fairly accurate information. Take this for example - this is a piece written by Mr. Peter Miller about a year ago... (and starring Peter Miller, and Mr. Murdoch) <<Some of our correspondents were dispatched to the gruesome opium den of the Spacemen 3 dressing room, hoping to get some illumination from some of the greatest minds in the late eighties indie rock galaxy......"Mister Boom, if you were a pizza, what flavour pizza would you be?"...... About five fragrant minutes later Sonic spoke...."That's a.....stupid question." End of interview. >> However, recently after that Stuart said the story was slightly different in that he said: nah it wasn't that, it was "Are you a cat band or a dog band?" And to my knowledge I've never told anyone else that apart from Peter (I just searched for it in the archives, so I didn't post it to the list), and this little anecdote appears in this weeks Melody Maker article, so there's someone who knows them quite well letting on to Melody Maker! Come on! Own up, who's the cowardly snivelling little mole! Naughty Naughty (as Mr.C would've said). That just reminded me, as this week's Harry Hill just began with a bit where the bloke is in Jersey and introduces the programme as "Coming from the Channel Islands, home of the cowardly collaborators with Hitler's Germany". Which had me laughing. Also, in that Harry Hill, Burt Kwouk announces he's Irish, and for that he's happy, as he's a big fan of the troubles - but then they work out that he actually means, the Wombles. Sinister: "Poetry is Pish!!!" Says OUTRAGED Struan Mugdock

I've got the melody maker in front of me. It's a great photo of Stuart and Isobel, but it looks a bit like Isobel is having a shot on Stuart's arse. She certainly looks like she's up to something. This is the biggest picture I've seen of the pair of them, I think I'll sneak into John Menzies and rip off loads of front pages and meticulously cut them all out. Then I can stick huge Stuart's and Isobar's all over Glasgow and confuse the rest of the band. 'Alright Stuart and Isobel!' they'll say, but it's not really them, it's one of my cut-outs. There's the article in the middle which our Pam Berry gets quoted in, but no mention of Timmy Hopkins who I remember was interviewed at the Nottingham gig. I haven't read it properly yet, so he might be. There's another photo on the inside, with some dogs. So there you go. I keep looking at the cover. Later on in the same issue the single gets totally slated by Everett True. Melody Maker is awfully shite. But it's a nice photo on the cover. HoneyPaul has gone into hiding and I fear for the future. Everybody should send him a nice letter, like in pantomimes when the fairy is sad and you've got to shout "CHEER UP" until the fairy is happy. Sinister: you've got to have a dream or how you gonna have a dream come true

Its been ages since I've had some really good dreams. I don't know whats happened but over the past coupla months my dreams have been about nothing in particular, I don't even get those 'paranoia' ones where I'm being chased by loads of angry angry people. About a year ago I couldn't wait to get to sleep at night 'cause I knew I would have the most weirdiest and most fantastical dreams. Once I dreamt that I was in a room in the houses of parliament and that it was totally filled with water and there were lots of shiny golden goldfishes swimming about, after getting to know the goldfish I suddenly noticed that the Stone Roses were in the same room, we all started chatting and then decided to do that kinda fish dance where you keep opening your mouth like a goldfish and pretend that youre doing breaststroke down the local swimming baths. Another night I dreamt I was in the Sex Pistols and that it was me who replaced Glenn Matlock. I didn't really last that long though cause my personal hygiene habits were not of a low enough standard, the band then decided to replace me with Sid who was quite a nice chap really, Sid was a bit worried that I'd be pissed off with him for taking my place but we soon sorted it all out and became good mates. I wouldn't mind a dream about Belle and Sebastian, in fact I wouldn't mind any kind of dreams cause the ones I've been having lately have been so lame that I can't even remember them while i'm in 'em let alone when I wake up. hello there my pretties, how are you all this fine morning, I've just made myself 2 and 1/2 hours late for work 'cos I had to wait for the nice men from TRANSCO to fit me a gas supply, while I made them tea and moaned about privatisation. Bah! Humbug! Now it just may be possible that someone here can help me understand one of my life's great mysteries which is What ever happened to that greatest of all music magazines "Sun, Zoom Spark"??? Here we all are moaning about how crap music magazines are and yet we let this little gem slip away, all I remember was that it went of the states with a cry of "see you again soon" and I never saw it again, *sob*. Will my ranks of well thumbed back copies never have any more brothers and sisters??
