Hello Playmates, This is a note to do some plugging for a friend. I like to "plug" my friends, but that's another story. Whatever. On May 2nd (next Saturday, for the hard of thinking) at London's celebrated Blow Up at the Wag, Soho there will be two Finnish groups playing - Hanoi Rocks and no... err the Elevators and Super. I hven't really heard the elevators but Super are. They are in a Cardigans/St Et/Stereolab styleee, singer Minna is a bouncy lovable stage presence, drummer Ville lost marginally to me in a King of the Sauna competition last year, and you should go, because I said so. On a Scandinavian tip (as ever), I have a hearty Tag recommendation for Robot, whose LP has been in strict rotation with "Mezzanine" (Keith, you're right, what was I thinking of, it rules) and Stereo Total's sexy new LP since my return. It's called "Automagic"and it's got pop songs on it. Not wussy "I saw a girl once and she was nice, but I've got spots so I'm fucked" alleged pop songs, but good ones. Lots of analogue synths playing catchy tunes with lyrics penned by a nutter, like the Silicon Teens (he said, sounding old), only better. One of their songs goes "I wish I could buy the pimples on your back and have them on a snack", which is tres romantic if you're a pervert. Happily I am. They're from Gothenburg, you know. If there is a tour, please, for the love of God, come through Austin. Your services are required in lifting special underpriviledged children such as myself out of the humdrums. I'm writing on behalf of my friend, erm, Jean. Jean is a girl who has money, but yet, she can't spend it to help support the live music scene as much as she would like. At the college radio station benefit the other night, she sat and watched how nobody was getting into the shitty bands that took the stage one right after another. These were punk bands that were supposed to stir your soul, instead, people stood and watched them bleakly as they waited for the alcohol to take effect. She is left to waste her money on clothes, movies, and an occasional CD. Her parents are quite concerned for her well being and think that she needs an excuse to dress sluttier and have an actual chance of getting a date. This is a girl of failing hope. Every week, she reads the local listings only to have her hopes lowered further and further that no one worthwhile will come to her area and cheer her up, but I have to watch as she quietly folds the paper and says "oh well. What's this Barney movie about?" Don't you see? She is actually considering Barney movies. The purple dinosaur that teaches you manners. We don't want this for our loved ones. We want these people, who constantly pester us with their trivialities to get out of the house and out of our hair (even if it is temporary). some people have mentioned in various ways that they were unsure that they were allowed to attend or didn't feel that they would fit in, so: EVERYONE WITHOUT EXCEPTION IS INVITED TO THE PICNICS you don't have to be part of some mythical "in" crowd, you are allowed to bring friends, you don't have to be b&s obsessed (just liking them is enough), it doesn't matter what age you are, or what clothes you wear. the only restriction is if it rains, as all the picnics will most likely end up in a bar, and obviously local licensing laws apply. but please, don't feel that the invitation isn't extended to you simply because you don't mail as often as Tag or Keith :) so for you who were hesitant and said no before you'd thought about saying yes, attached is the web page with all the details on it. and i hope to hear that all the picnics were succesfull in numbers as well as atmosphere (the latter being almost guaranteed given the likes of most of the people i know are already attending them). thanks david kitchen -=-
