Has anyone seen the review of the new Blueboy album in Mojo? Not only do they make it Indie album of the month (aren't we supposed to have stopped using that word by now?) but the reviewer describes it as a more polished Belle and Sebastian. What a strange thing to say. It's a very nice record, with five or six lovely songs on it. But the up-tempo numbers suck, and it rather overplays the Cocteau Twins big echoing guitar strum effect. It does mention Oon in the thank you bit on the sleeve, though, which is cool. I presume it's the same Oon. Does anyone know anything about Union Wireless? Keith Cameron played a song of theirs on XFM the other night and it was wonderful. Also, is the Arnold record worth buying? I enjoyed the shoegazing discussion a while back. My favourite shoegazing song of all time is Mogwai's New Paths to Helicon, which pretty much defines the genre. I don't think they're much cop since, though. One more question: who is the guy who sings on the V-Twin b-side (Sound as Ever, I think it's called). It isn't Chris, is it? It sounds very much like young Roddy Frame. Hey, see Kurt and Courtney. It's awesome. More than anything it just proves that all the people who have ever been close to Courtney are mean and bitter. It's hilarious how some of her so-called friends try to prove their case. It is obvious that these people are petty and foolish. They did say some aweful things about her but when you actually look at who is speaking, it sort of ruins their validity. I think she comes out a bit ahead. We had a lovely snog during the film. SNOT: the slimy substance that is produced inside your nose. I'LL GET ME COAT: expression used as a means of bidding farewell by people who are aware that they are boring everyone senseless for no good reason. Sinister: Bands in Scotland

I'd just like to say I'd generally agree that most of these Scottish bands are shite, Arab Strap and Mogwai have a couple of moments and show promise, but the rest yeah, mainly pants. However, I'm just listening to the new single by the second best band to come from Scotland/Portsmouth. The new Beta Band single is fucking ace and it's called "Los Amigos del Beta Banditos", it's completely great kind of laid back groovy stuff - maybe a wee bit like the Rolling Stones on "Let it Bleed", not much P!O!P! on it, so beware P!O!P! snobs, this isn't for you, although, having said that, it's got 3 B sides and only 1 A side, so maybe that'll come in useful for belting on about a few years down the line perhaps. Incidentally, the Beta Band play the venue in Edinburgh tomorrow night, and are well worth going to see, cause they're better live - totally different actually, more like Talking Heads on Stop Making Sense, and normally I find live bands pretty shite really, but the Beta band I thought were ace. Whatever happens to all those stars of Australian soap operas who release one record which does piss-all in the top 40 hit parade and then disappear back to relative obscurity. Where are you now Stefan Dennis? Gayle & Gillian? Craig McLachlan and Check-1-2. And what happened to Bronwyn? I thought she was lovely. And how come when Kerry got shot dead trying to save ducks she didn't actually bleed. And why am I more likely to belch after drinking diet soft drinks than I am after drinking their '10 teaspoons of sugar in every glass' counterparts. Is it the phenylalanine? And is it the excessive belching that's supposed to cause cancer? And why would a woodchuck want to chuck wood in the first place? It's been a slow morning. I've just handled a cheque for £503,819. Hello all. I have been informed that certain listees are getting pissed off with me writing all the time, so this is going to be short and in the singular. Nick Dastoor - it wasn't me who crushed on you. There IS someone out there who will love you! My feelings are not the kind you have to proclaim to others - I don't want to be arrested, for a start. Class - try entering a moral argument as a middle-class white male. You haven't got a hope. There is no way in which you are less than privileged. There's nothing you can ever say to get the moral upper hand - unless you're talking to Aloysius Montmorency Tollemach-Tollemach Horne, of course.
