all these references to the wee lil state of rhode island makes my heart swell with pride...almost :) it's quite rare that teeny rhode island's role in the grand old world of um..pop...(tee hee) gets recognized... actually, i'm talking out of my ass...none of the references so far had anything to do with such a role...wishful thinking..although we did have small factory and velvet crush and um...others (?) which brings me to my question... how exactly is belle and sebastian linked to rhode island? it was a former name of sorts, non? if so...why? how? i find this all very intriguing...and amusing... hehehe anyone who actually knows the state as i do will understand why maybe... ~darling ...hanging out in a town whose claim to fame is the highest point in rhode island (the state landfill) and its connection with the mafia...woo hoo! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . It was, well a nice base line there, a nice trumpet blast there(or was the nice trumpet blast on the flip side?), a sort of nice groove going on here, and a nice story, (yet discussing a similar relationship development to the one discussed in Century of Elvis), and wait a minute, why is it getting all fast, and its slow again and its over. Where was the song? Okay when I want sheer brilliance. >that it might be...different That's the reason I fell in love with the Belle & Sebastian in the first place. They were different. And they were taking chances. I guess the new album going's to be a Revolver as opposed to a Rubber Soul. I just hope they use the breakbeats more effectively on the album. I still say lowfi breakbeats is a musical dead end. But then again I sitting here listening to Four-Calendar Cafe, and enjoying it, even though most people think it the worst Cocteau Twins LP ever. Sorry, Carrick, maybe I overreacted a little, but no malice was intended, it was a joke really, and I'm sure regular readers will know that I do like to play devil's advocate sometimes. I certainly wasn't using you as a stepping stone as some people have suggested. A stepping stone to what, I wonder? Still, I digress. I read Carrick's first mail and I'd be lying if I said it didn't jar. I love all B&S records so far, but I don't want Sinister#2, I think you should use all means at your disposal to make great records, whether breakbeats or mongolian nose-flutes if they work. I just thought Carrick's mail sounded more than a little luddite (like the folkies who objected to Dylan going electric), his follow-up letter put such fears at bay. In response to Andreas, who has taken it upon himself to badmouth me snidely and self-righteously, which comes as quite a shock, given the good-natured conversations we've had in the past, can I just apologise once again for being unable (unavoidably) to meet him in Sweden in April and hope this wasn't the real motivation for his rather hurtful and unfounded remarks about "stepping stones" and "cliqueyness". Sinister: pond life and pit bulls

sorry to hear about the warring newts. has anyone mentioned that the reason that these newts might be fighting is that they are both males and probably have too much testosterone so all they know how to do is fight? either that or you have bought some infamous west african fighting newt, if you have bought them fully grown you never know how their former owners treated them. for instance when we got our dog, the lovely sunny a rather fetching blonde pit bull we made sure she came right off her mothers nipple so she was sure to have none of those fighting impulses...maybe that is what should be the rule with fire belly newts as well as pit bulls! blah blah blah...some good news or part two in the tadpole trilogy. three days ago in my pond i realized that my big shubunkin goldfish have reproduced! isn't that great...i now have LOADS of little fishes who are going to grow up to be big and strong! and...my tadpoles have not all been eaten by raccoons....they are FROGS!! hooray! thats all...oooooooooooh only another whole day in New York and then my LIST CRUSH meets me at the airport for 6 weeks of loving(s) and muffins (thanks elisa for the ryhme) see ya... rachel. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . Sinister: 10 Roddington Place

Poundcake: Up until about three days ago I wouls have had no idea what this was. But now I know that it's madeira cake. Dangerously tasty stuff, available with slick production and great packaging throughout Central Europe on the Mildred label, straight outta Germany, I believe. Well worth investigation. Alternatively, bake your own cake in your bedroom! List crishes: Mine's Elisabeth. And Andreas. Elisabeth told us some stuff about the Zombies. At this point I would normally claim that I prefer Argent to the Zombies, but I've never heard them. But I have heard Colin Blunstone's version of "Say You Don't Mind" by my favourite racing driver, Denny Laine. Which is blissful in the extreme. Shame I haven't got it either. Come to think of it, I haven't got any Zombies. I've got a crush on Andreas because of his nice summer wishes for us all. The same to you, Andreas. We hope to have you back soon, refreshed and reinvigorated. But I have got some Kinks. On tape. Even hardened Viet-Kong veterans such as myself are reduced to blubbering wrecks by the beautiful song "Do You Remember Walter?". It's far too sad for human consumption. As is "Thirteen" by Big Star, not really a twee tale about young love, at least not if you believe what you're told. As I always do. Roddd, you made me laugh today. I can't remeber why now, but it was funny. I like to think that "Knock on Wood " was a sly reference to Brother Eddie Floyd, who will be performing here soon. Unfortunately he's special guest vocalist with the Blues Brothers band, so I don't think I'll be going. Then again, it might be my only chance to be in the same room as one of the stars of my favourite film ever, "Wattstax". It's a tricky one. I digress. One last point: A couple of weeks ago our W*rld C*p fun was spoilt by a few outbursts of unsightly nationalism. You may remember that I was actively anti-nationalist, but I didn't go into the reasons in any depth. I think now is the time to reveal all. You see, I don't have any strong national identity, I'm a mixture. I'm the fruit of an illicit encounter between a Croatian potato leper and the French agriculture minister, making me half French-half Croatian. There, I'm glad I got that off my chest.
