it's 4:40 a.m. here in georgia and i just drove three hours from atlanta to get back home and i'm tired, but i'm such a sad little fuck that i had to check my messages before konkchoo land. so i'll go ahead and fill you in.....duke, pay close attention. i would've posted this to the magnetic fields list, but they seem to be a bunch of pretentious farts, so i'd rather let ya'll hear about it. i just got back from the best damn show in years in the best damn club i've ever been to. i'm speaking of magnetic fields and damon and naomi and the wonderul wonderful great local band, seely. seely was a bit of a surprise. i have their albums cause i know the drummer from when he worked at this record store called wuxtry. but i had never seen them live. they were fucking amazing. they were layin down grooves that would make stereolab want to pack it in. i'm gonna have to go back and listen to those albums some more. they're on too pure if anyone's interested. then, damon and naomi. ahhhhh. i had never seen them live either. one word.......magical. damon on acoustic, naomi on bass and sometimes this weird little organ that was kind of like an accordion except you didn't hold it. she had to keep pumping this thing in the back i guess to send air for the notes. they didn't play 1969, but they did play laika and the first song off the new album that i can't remember the name of and this car climbed mt. washington. but they didn't play 1969. oh well....can't win em all. and then the man with the master plan.....stephin merritt. i had seen them twice before, once in d.c. when they weren't that great, once in atlanta last year when they played for three hours and it was the best show i had ever been to. both times the setup was two guitars, cello, drums. a far cry from the electronics of the albums. this time however, there were no drums. claudia was on piano, stephin on guitar, that cello guy, and then the other dude was playing a banjo. yes, you heard it...a banjo. but it worked really well. there wasn't as much friendly banter from stephin this time as last time, but i didn't expect it. they played about seven or eight new songs along with lots of other stuff. and if the the songs on the new album sound anything near as good as they do live, we're gonna be witnessing history in the making (not that "holiday" and "charm of the highway strip" weren't...they were also). there's one that blew me away where the chorus is "i've been kissing this bottle wishing it was you". they even played "the tiny goat" off the gothic archies thing. the gothic archies stuff works much better live than on cd in my opinion. and stephin was actually hitting some falsetto notes. when he sang "josephine" off of the distant plastic trees album, he actually did the high part on the lyric "science fiction about you" just like the girl who sang it did. he also got his voice lower than i had ever heard it on one of the new songs. it sounded like he swallowed a foghorn. i saw about three people go up to the merchandise booth and ask which cd they should get. they all walked away with "charm". there was even this drunk fratboy who was asking me about them saying he had never heard them, but "this is the best shit i've ever heard".......makes me think maybe people aren't so bad after all. oh yeah, and they covered "more than a feeling" by boston. i couldn't take the stupid grin off my face. i'm off to sleep. -brad ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . Sinister: London gig accomodation option

I noticed from the photo on the recent Jeepster mailout that Stewpot M is left handed...I'm sure this explains a lot. Such as "If you're feeling Sinister". "If your feeling Dexter" would not have had worked and would probably have got you in troub with the police. And it would always have reminded me of Dexter Fletcher for whom I have the utmost lothing because a bloke I know who looks a bit like him is going out with a girl I fancy. Dexter's an odd name - I think it would rank about 3rd in my list of names I never trust, after Spencer and Justin. But I am openminded and if you are a Spencer or a Justin email me privately if you feel you wrongly tarred by your namesake's brush. Anyhow enough of this rubbish. What I wanted to do was say that I could fit 3 lovely listees at my place after the gig on 7th. I live on a big spooky hill on top of an old Indian burial ground and I don't get many visitors..... Actually it's Hammersmith - about 20mins from the Venue and I'd be delighted to help out if I could. Good afternoon, list As a pathetic sop to all those on or near the West Coast of America who won't get to see B&S live in this or any other lifetime, I offer the following: since that review suggested the new elpee as sounding fantastic on the Pacific Coast Highway, I am hereby offering my services as driver and host for the West Coast listening party. My car seats six in relative comfort, and I just splashed out on a car stereo, so I propose to fit five listees in it and drive up and down the coast for an hour or two listening to the album, as near as possible to the release date, or before depending on who gets a tape and when. They may get to go to glitzy Oxford Street bacchanalian nightclubs, but you and I can find some comfort in the sunset from Zuma Beach. They can keep their bohemian London "night bus", we have a 1970 Dodge Polara with gold seats. And no one on board smells of pee. Apart from me. Sinister: flying from califor-nye-ay to New York

The East Coast USA dates for B&S shows will probably be announced sometime in the coming weeks, and I'm taking a guess that I'm not the only person obsessed/excited (or is that desperate/pathetic?) enough to consider flying from my tour-disadvantaged area to someplace like New York, Boston or Washington DC in hopes of seeing a gig. So do we have any generous souls on the list who are willing to offer accommodations to those of us who do that?? Just someplace to sleep for a night or two. On the subject on grubbing (well, my last name ain't Rockerfeller) if anyone else on the list is going to that concert at Shoreline Amphitheatre on August 13th, this lil kitten needs a lift there from San Francisco and back. Sinister: Who/Cinerama

Hi Sinisterines, Re the recent thread about the Who, I went to that gig at Charlton and the Who were brilliant, as were Little Feat (bet that's the first time they've got a mention on this list!). Not a bad day out for £4. Don't remember seeing any half naked girls, though. Someone also recently berated a journalist for lack of imagination in comparing Cinerama with our darlings B & S - apart from the fact that David Lewis Gedge teams up with a female singer from Glasgow on a couple of tracks, goes for a rich augmented rock band sound including woodwind, strings & trumpet, and has written modern pop songs that draw on the best traditions of the last 30 years, I personally can't see any resembalnce at all! 6 weeks to go tonight!
