According to their website, it is the one off Briggate that is in use at present. The directions that follow are for people walking. I have no idea about the complexities of the one way system and spreadign pedestrianisation of the centre of Leeds. Happily. >From the railway station: Turn left out of the main doors of the railway station and walk up to the corner of City Square. Turn right along Boar Lane, and wander along there for a couple of hunderd yards, until you see McDonalds on your left. McDonalds is on the corner of Boar Lane and Briggate. Turn left up Briggate. Swan Street (which as I remember is less a street than a little alleyway, but I might be wrong) goes left off Briggate as you walk up the hill, by the side of Peel the Chemist. If you're coming from the north of town, find the St John's shopping centre. Remember to have a look at the sometimes excellent Jumbo Records while you're there. From St John's go into Dortmund Square, which is a little pedestrian square with a statue of a fat fellow holding a barrel. I like him. At the opposite end of the square from the St John's Centre is The Headrow. Turn left down the Headrow, and take the second right into Briggate. Going down the hill, Swan Street is a little way dowwn on your left, next (funnily enough) to Peels the Chemist. Anyway, you don't have to take my word on it. Look at their website: http://www.leeds.gov.uk/CityVarieties they have included a picture of a group of people I can only assume to be Belle and Sebastian on their front page. Doesn't Stu M look happy at the front there? And that furry fellow in the hat, that'll be Stuart D, yes? Or perhaps he's the one in the stripes and the green hat? Meet up pub suggestions will follow later today, from me or someone else. I don't know about door times, but it should say on your ticket? I hope that helps. Tim P.S.: 2 things for Mister Miller... first, Echo and the Bunnymen were never the same once they *got* a proper drummer... second, which Junior Byles best of is it? I've never heard a bad Junior B record, and can particularly recommend his work with Scratch, Niney and with Channel One. I haven't heard the new Blood and Fire release (partly) by him. Sinister: planet of sound album review

*---* HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINISTER BABIES *---* The poetic Scots' last two albums veered between genius and dubious, and this, with songs written and performed by various members, is equally mixed. Highlights: the title track, a glorious handclap-ridden romp, Dirty Dream #2's orchestral sweep, Isobel's fey, folksy Is It Wicked? and the uber-B&S opener. The expected musical nods are made to Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, Charlie Brown and Arab Strap but lyrically this LP is less inspired than previous releases. Sinister: Meeting up in London

Could some of you (Katrina, David ?) tell me when and where you will meet up before or after this gig. As I will not be able to check my e-mail after friday evening, I would very appreciate if you could give me those informations before i leave my beautiful country. I will not have mau things to do in london during 3 days, except buying 54 TBWTAS albums for some friend of mine, and finding 235.245 arab straps for some other friend. So I you want to meet a french listee during the weekend, and if you dont want him to be lost alone in the town like a poor lonesome sinisteree, dont hesitate to contact me also. We could talk together about french wine, french cheese, french football, french president (dont smile please)... but if you prefere Belle & Sebastian it is really not a problem for me. Sinister: amphibian runaround

*---* HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINISTER BABIES *---* Lots of people have talked about the Maryhill concerts by now, including Fluffy Starry from our kitchen, so I'm not going to go on and rub your wee cute button noses in it. It was dead good though, the only hitch being the lack of Sweet handclaps on The Boy (I don't think they had any hands left). I got only two songs in my entry to Chris's competition. Sarah called Stuart David a smellie wee boy to his face and he didn't punch her. Oon gave the band a lovely Thai picture of two blokes riding chickens in a forest. Linda got called Karen. Stuart Murdoch took us all on a two minute diversion from the stage about "Mike Read's Runaround" (for those not called "Peter Miller" it was a UK kids TV programme in the 80s). He concluded we were all "too young" when we didn't respond to jokes about orange balls. Linda and I coughed a little. In this weeks NEWS spot we have some NEWT NEWS, entirely justified by the on-topic nonsense above. The REAL Sinister babies have arrived - just before yesterday's concert Linda went to clean the newties tank, because it's all green and there are beer cans sprinkled all over the gravel, and she found two little tadpoley things with what appear to be frilly hats. No wonder Thelma and Bob were quiet the other day when we had some Sinisterines looking in - they were *resting*. Because I'm a forlorn romantic, I reckon they were born last Thursday - Sinister birthday day. So, Audrey and Terry, welcome to the list. We had a very Belle and Sebastian moment today in Waterstones on Princes Street, reading about newt mating dances, with Sarah excitedly pointing out the really-rather-rude mating dances and Linda exchanging rude newt anatomical words (e.g. "clacoa"). Oh and if anyone's expecting to buy any decent records in Glasgow in the next 6 months, forget it. After three days' shopping, Oon's got them all in her bag. OK I'm going to post a separate message about wanting two tickets for gigs so you'll all see it. For now I'll leave you with an observation from Sarah - amidst all the B&S reviews and usual ephemera in this week's press (including a cracking artist's impression of Stuart Smirnoff sans knickers), on page 10 of the MM you'll see a "What's It All About" article about... "List Songs". The big lazy gits nicked it from OUR list! There's apparently a lot of your own examples on there. Next week expect "What's It All About... Newt Mating Dances on Mike Read's Runaround".
