there was no bossanova on anyone's lists. How can it be so! I have an LP sent to me by a lovely Brazilian in which Joao Gilberto and some other Brazillians play some nice songs. I'm so glad someone has mentioned the Brazilians. you've restored my faith in the world. Besides keeping a toe in British waters, I've really got this thing for the brazilians. What LP is that Mick McMick speaks of? Also check out the first album of Caetano Veloso (kind of regarded as the John Lennon of Brazil), Domingo, with Gal Costa, if you fancy. Very gentle. <<lack of black folks on the music list is startling; good point. can't say i care for the music most american blacks are making today.>> I wasn't going to comment on this because, hmm well didn't care to, really! but the nitpicker in me did, so... <deep breath> As I recall Genevieve (who, it would seem, has ANGEL WINGS!!) mentioned some pretty slinky soul-type bands in her wee list...and some brave soul fessed up to liking Mariah Carey also (c'mon now don't try to backpeddle and say it was only sarcasm!!) Anyway, Mariah Carey is black... or at least as black as I am, which admittedly is only a little but...it counts... ok so her music artistry may be questionable...but LAURYN HILL! there's some "good American black" music, she is not only talented and soulful but beautiful. (...here's where I wait for the blacklash, "no you silly moo, Lauryn Hill is pish/p!o!o!/whatever the hip slag word of the day is") Regardless, I'm sure there *are* tons of Sinisterines who count black singers/bands among their favorites, but they probably just didn't bother posting their list. Someone brought up SAINT ETIENNE... which again gives me the opportunity to foolishly offer to make mix tapes of them for anyone interested in checking the hype... contact me privately for details...Any Avenuers here?? I swear, if anyone pulls that stunt again (i.e. asking questions that you know that every single dork on the list will answer, the same way- yourstruly as well in case you were wondering) I'll hook my car battery up to my computer and electrocute them. I had to unsubscribe.... it was that bad.... go to digest. I couldn't take it. I mean, I really hate deleting everyone's messages en masse but I couldn't take another waiting three minutes just to see "oh, Smiths... Pulp..... Radiohead.... Jesus and Mary Chain..... Elliott Smith...." (oh! and no black people, ha ha, except for the alphabetizing trainspotter I saw toss in Albert Ayler, as if) I mean, really. The best instore music experience was once when Tower was pushing the Spiritualized album and left this disastrous 10-minute fuzz-storm playing, it was funny just to see people's heads turn up to the speakers like those flowers caught in stop-action on nature shows. Going into class every day of third grade made me sigh.... I just sat in the back of the class and copied maps out of atlases all day. By the way, that was a bitchslapworthy question too but since it demands a modicum of creativity to answer (i.e. who the fuck remembers what made them sigh back then? Cry, maybe, but sigh? I think really young people only sigh when they're bored, and I think, really, that Belle and Sebastian would make a young boy sigh). Without misgiving, I paid upwards of fifty bucks to see Isaac Hayes play in Israel... I guess it was worth it as my brother and I were televised, live, running down to the front and dancing when "shaft" was played. I don't consider myself to be a person who gets easily annoyed but; Marco that is not big, nor clever, and is even more annoying than those lists. So dont! And in memory of Honey. My haiku; PLEASE DO WHAT I SAY, AND GO LOOK IN THE ARCHIVES, NOW. THANKS VERY MUCH. That has got to be a prize winner. I like the idea of these haiku things but am fearful of getting millions and millions of them on the list each day, so is there any chance you at Poetryplace2, could give us the daily highlights in a Match of the Day style, with after haiku analysis from Alan Hanson, Des "GOD" Lynam, and Trevor Brooking (sorry that is undoubtably lost on you nonUK listees-smug grin :) ). hullo listees, at some in his massive post, ian asked if anyone had an opinion on snow patrol. well, i certainly do. i 'met' the lovely lads last...october was it?...when they played a gig with mogwai here in new york, at brownie's. i didn't actually *see* snow patrol's set...my friend and i were somewhere else, i think...but we started chatting with gary at the bar and he ended up giving up a copy of a demo tape. (mogwai's set, incidentally, was brilliant of course.) my friend and i rushed home to listen to the tape, quite curious as we hadn't seen sp's gig and figuring they were such nice boys *and* on jeepster, they must be all right at least. in the end we were very impressed. they remind one of palace brothers and sebadoh, without being annoyingly low-fi...plus they're northern irishmen living in scotland which is a plus in my book. so ian and anyone who cares, my opinion of snow patrol is a good one. however, i don't think they're releasing anything in the states. i know they were supposed to come back to new york at some point and play again but as far as i know this never happened. i suppose i should be asking katrina about this but if anyone has any info then please do share. the friend who was with me that night, by the way, did get to see them play live when she moved to london and sure enough, true to rumor, jonny did get his, erm, balls out during the gig. well, anyway, snow patrol yah. it's the end of the day and i need to go home... cheers, stasia anastasia signoretta atlantic records international media relations 1290 avenue of the americas 24th floor new york, ny 10104 212.707.2619 * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * 'but how can i see stars if my feet are on the ground?' ride ------------- Original Text >From "IAN CAMPBELL" <ian.campbell6(a)virgin.net>, on 9/23/98 3:20 PM: Regarding mr. wimbury I have a copy of snow patrolÆs album, which I would be happy to tape, if you Æd send me the tape.
