Belle & Sebastian will do a radio session in the Bernard Lenoir's Show on the french radio France Inter on october 5th (the day before the Paris gig). The show is broadcasted on AM band (162 kHz). So we figured perhaps we'd maybe sort out a great big party for the people on the list (and naturally anyone else), with DJ's and booze. Ideally this would take place at some point in the next few months. Perhaps some time around New Year. What do people think of the idea? The second question of course is where it's going to be. I'd have no trouble arranging a place to do it in Edinburgh and stuff (it'd prevent me sleeping in a flowerbed again too probably), but I'm dubious as to whether people from the south of England would come all that way, and at the moment I figure Manchester's probably the best bet as it's sort of in the middle. Hopefully Tag would be able to sort out somewhere there. Everyone I've spoken to so far reckons it's a good idea so it'd be nice to hear who would actually attend such a thing. It would rock (70's WHO might be played), we would all rule and generally have a good time. Whenever I hear the start of Spaceboy Dream I think he's saying he had to go on a trip to "ma arse". I was thinking Stu. mate - your well up their already. But then I thought that might be ill advised. Went shopping on Saturday - 2 shops were playing the album. One was Rory's fault I discovered on going upstairs. My parents have just come back from the Pyrenees. They showed me photos of Pyrenean Mountain Dogs like the original Belle. Huge great brutes they are but so cuddly :) Smashinging into the top 13 at number 12 - Respec' Keith/Tags party idea is FABULOOOS (I'm off to Belgium today so I'm practising the lingo -sorry). I shall be there demonstrating my hard won nickname - "hotfeet" Johnston and if I'm not careful my more common nickname "Oddsocks". Sinister: The Boy with the arab strap ramblings

A lot of the talk of similarities between this new album and other things from the past that people have noticed (I myself also noticed the Carly Simon similarity, but then again "You're so Vain" sounds like a ripoff of Carol King's "Too Late Baby"). I think that "Seymour Stein" is almost note-by-note rendition of Nick Drake's Northern Sky. It isn't the 1st B&S to sport such similarities. When my sister 1st heard sinister, she thought "Get Me Away from Here I'm Dying" sounded like some 70's song. I myself thought it sounded like "All Fall Down" from Primal Scream's 1st single in 1986. Just goes too show that Tigermilk was the bands best album... All humor aside, The Boy With the Arab Strap is a fabulous album and it reaffirms my faith in them. I think any one of 6 songs on the album could be huge radio hits, if not for the names (Sorry, I just cannot hear Casey Kesem saying, "And that was the Scottish Band Belle and Sebastian who just moved up a notch to #4 with their first hit, Dirty Dream #2." "Simple Things" would be a smash hit if it were at least 2 and a half minutes long. Its funny though. When I first heard it, I was a bit dissappointed. Their music has a strange and subtle effect on you: You think its too simplistic at first, and a lot of the songs don't seem to be going anywhere. But after a few listens, its as if the songs convince you that they are supposed to be the way they are. I think most of their releases have been that way, save for a few songs (Photo Jenny, State I'm In, Judy and the Dream of Horses, Seeing other People, String Bean Jean), all of which grabbed me right away. One more similarity I noticed was the cover, which shows Chris Geddes with an arrow through his chest. This reminded me of the cover of both My Bloody Valentine's "You Make Me Realise" and 10,000 Maniacs "In My Tribe," both excellent records by the way. I wouldn't have thought suicide because of the line "Will stay with us till we get old." I just thought the person left, with no real place to go to. But, lyrics and poetry of all sorts are so often open to the interpretation of the person listening/reading them -- and what life experiences that person brings to the hearing of them. There is no denying that beauty is often found in the telling of painful things, especially when the telling is done through the medium of an art form. Then, even ugliness is beauty, when it is well and truthfully done. And beauty should bring us joy. And, this is a beautiful song, in itself. Even sad beautiful songs make me happy, just by their existance. I might politely add that it is rude to personally attack people -- we are happy bunnies here. Wait, no! -- we've become a legion of bedroom saddoes... (I just canNOT keep up! Now I'm worried about myself -- maybe I've become an idea, like StarFluff) but that's no call for bad manners.
