Yes, escaping from Oklahoma is a wise choice. I presume you didn't actually return. maps are ok, but do a search under the reference section in yahoo and they give all sorts of other services that provide the same. I know I'm a dunce, but the actual yahoo map site didn;'t sit well with me because it needed exact addresses and wouldn't give me a map. However, these sites are great 'coz I have no sense of direction, didn't have a map on me and was still able to make my way from boston to lowell once even when I made the mistake of packing the directions in the same part of my bag that a bottle of shampoo was in leaking all over the place smearing my lettering and gagging me with the smell of pantene the whole trip. I got there which is a shock, and if I can use it, almost anyone can. Anyway, as far as the song title debate: I really thought they were joking. True, they had songs in the past taken from movies, but to actually name an album like that with the name of a very current band is sort of strange. Most people like to be snobs and only reference obscure films or their favorite band that they grew up with. Since I'm an innocent and don't know what an arab strap is, it sounds like whips and chains to me which is cool. We can live, although this really tries to make the world sit up and take notice saying "hey, we're not a band about girls in sleeping bags and flowers and that other stuff. We are seamy love machines!" Although getting down and dirty with xylaphones and flutes is hard. Believe me, I've tried. Men get bored and leave. Or maybe it's to help all the people who say "Arab Strap" with a straight face actually find out what it means. We can go on all night with this. the point is: I don't know. All that counts is the music in my book. Ick. that sounds so cliche. I wish I could end with a more inspiring word than that. *---* HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINISTER BABIES *---* ohh..i'm not gone yet sometimes i get upset when i see someone write 'this and this song i think is the weakest on the album' but we've all got different tastes..(how can you not like a summer wasting? stuart murdoch: staying up all night,party guy)i keep reading and it seems a lot of people like sleep the clock around best,where i like it..but not best,it's got a nice kooky flair to it actually,the little instrument doo de doo's at the beginning? even the record store boy likes that one best,but he thinks the whole album is weak...my favourite changes a lot,with the first listen i just loved dirty dream#2 so much (i really like spaceboy dream actually) and then it was ease your feet song,with it's lovely hazy sound to it,especially when stuart goes 'but what can i do?' awwww,wooshy wooshy wooshy,he's just a puddin pop...but right now it's simple things,(if only it was longer!) to me,these songs have that rich sound(more emotional maybe? dirty dream#2...'happy happy joy joy',simple things..'damn i wish i had a scottish boy who would sigh' and ease feet..'this is lovely,let's forget bad teachers that are afraid of warts') and this is strictly from the music,as i always mistake lyrics,and or can't hear them. ok,NOW i'm gone love, genevieve +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". *---* HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINISTER BABIES *---* dear people, I hope you're all good and rested from your little adventures,i'm not so bitter now...it really just school you see (and no,no scottish or welsh exchange students) it's kind of pain..it's your last year,you really just want to have fun,but then,this is the year that counts,so you actually have to learn...i don't exactly have the most marvellous teachers..our new math teacher gives you a detention for CHEWING GUM! and this other one makes you bend over to see if you're skirt is too short.. but try complaining about this to parents! they will just go 'Excuse me? I had nuns as teachers! I was beaten for breathing too loudly!' or.. 'yes i remember one time we all made a plan to drop our books at the same time! oh yes, WE were the rebels!' do any of you want some zuchinni? it just keeps growing and growing..we have 500 pounds of zuchinni bread! so did stuart do anything different on stage? did he smile sheepishly and go 'i'd like to thank you all for coming out tonight!' and rip his shirt off? did any of you throw underwear at him,you know..just as a joke.. talking about titles and words n googly stuff: i like the title of the boy with the arab strap,it's sort of lost the original 'ooh,he's so naughty' meaning tho,i think i would still prefer something a little more..belle and sebastian..well you KNOW!(i mean it's good to be different,but sometimes it's just for the sake of being different? i don't know) all those clever little lines they can come up with,a littlre more dreamy and creative maybe.. i'm starting to really like 'simple things'(is stuart singing 'to make a young boy sigh' in there?? so lovely!!) now..but it's too short..it kind of deprives you,it's good and then it just ends..but it doesn't seem like it should end so soon MORE MORE MORE ... i was looking at this painting in an ad for the Glasgow Art Fair, of this boy with those thick black glasses and there are daisies..it's a really nice picture,i didn't notice it at first,but now i keep having to look at it,it seems to me it would've made a perfect b&s cover art...(i remember walking with Arctic Woman once,and we were looking at some of the art displays from the school,and i think the topic was a self-portrait and one of them was a little clay figure all huddled up in a shoe-box, Arctic Woman thought that if stuart murdoch was in that art class,that would be his,so maybe it is good they take a stranger approach with titles instead of the dancing with kittens in the sunshine all the time etc) chickfactor (i know i know,it's a zine) it is sort of a funny word with them..you know how them boys will be like 'aww man,i got the job,got the pimpmobile! all i need now is a girl!' that's what it reminds me of..like he is missing the 'chick' factor,man. nighty night little kittens, genevieve xoxo +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". *---* HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINISTER BABIES *---* Salut les copains, Ah ah, how sweet to live in Japan when you find out that the new LP is released on the saturday preceding its worldwide release! I felt a strange shock aswell as an adrenaline excess when I came across the fancied green cover in a record store in Kyoto. But OK, I won't spoil and talk about the songs. Though now I understand better why clapping hands is hip. OK, maybe some of you remember that I am currently collecting the inks polairoids that were submitted to the list, so that Monsieur David Kitchen can enlight the Jeepster site. Sinister: Ranting on about London again...

*---* HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINISTER BABIES *---* Hello you all, As coincidence would have it, little Nickie Dastoor, who I haven't sexually harassed for, ooh, weeks now, has spookily reappeared in a murky corner of my life, so I thought I'd just let it be known in front of you all that even the fates (and the long arm of the law) can't keep us apart, Nickie! You'll be pleased to hear I'm now on remand, and that restraining order ain't worth the paper it's written on... Shame the "wearing name badges for the gigs" idea never came to fruition - I expect I'm going to be wandering about West London in a loved-up daze, introducing myself to people regardless, and hoping that they're not going to smack me in the mouth (hiya Fluffy!) but instead (hypothetically) embrace me in the all-conquering love of the Belle and the Sebastians experience. I can't wait!!! There are already several of us intending to move into the Shepherds Bush area dead early - am I assuming that the soulless but convenient Firkin pub next door is the best place to meet? Unless it's a lovely day, in which case it has to be the green outside the pub, surely? Anyway, is anyone specifically organising anything, or is it just a turn up when you can thing? Suits me either way - but do try and come as early as you can, cos from 4 or so onwards the beer'll be flowing, we'll be getting the verses the wrong way round in "The State I am in" (you know who you are...) and conversations of chord changes and poetry will be supplanted by an all-encompassing state of Feeling Like Heaven. Yes they will! God, how exciting is this? I don't half envy those who have already experienced the joy, especially the lucky beggars going for the straight flush, but there's something kind of nice about it being a one off (does that sound convincing? No, didn't think so). Oh, and one other thing - if someone does respond to a previous query and post the track listings from previous concerts, could you make it known in the header as I don't want to have a clue what might or might not be played - it's my version of refusing to hear the songs on the radio, I suppose. Thank you very much. I can't believe what the Melody Maker said about Dirty Dream. Why oh why? Okay, it does sound a bit like McAlmont and Bernie, but so, so much better...And I wouldn't exactly call A Summer Wasting an "instant classic" - I reckon it sounds a bit like the Levellers near the end... But I've talked too much (no kidding?), so I'll see a thousand of you on Monday... Sinister: Back in Paris

*---* HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINISTER BABIES *---* Well, that's it... I've just arrived in Paris, after four days spent in England, four of the most wonderful days, I must say. I dont know what you've all thought about the gigs : I was too lazy to read your posts, and I thought it would be more spontaneous to tell you what I loved, liked and disliked during these four days without reading my mails. So. as I said before, I think I've just spent four of the most wonderful days of my pop life... Four days discovering railways in England (trains arrived on time, I was surprised) ; discovering Leeds and Nottingham (I thought they would be uglier, I was surprised too) ; wandering in Camden Lock when I arrived in London on the first day of my journey ; meeting lovely people (I'll come back to this later on) ; being interviewed and photographied by the Melody Maker in Leeds and then in Nottingham and then on the train from Nott to London (the journalist -a nice guy by the way- was interested by the fact we were coming especially from France to see Belle & Sebastian) ; discovering that Elliott Smith travels in the first class, even if he still wears his blue hat ; speaking with Stuart Murdoch at the end of the gig in Leeds and realizing he's a very nice guy, not especially shy ; realizing I was too shy to accept to be introduced to Isobel who was dancing in Nottingham... well you understand what I mean. I loved the two gigs as well : they were totally different, they cant be compared, actually. The first one was marvelous as far as the sound and the music are concerned : Stuart does have the voice of an angel (have you ever seen an angel sing? Well, it's easy, angels have the same voice as him), Mick Cooke was really ace with his trumpet, and the music was perfect. So clear and pure... In Nottingham, they were as excellent as the day before. Well, maybe it was too hot ; maybe the venue was too big ; but when you were standing near the stage, you forgot all these drawbacks... and Isobel sung a wonderful cover, "Poupée de cire, poupée de son"... and they played "The loneliness of the middistance runner"... (just after a short break to have diner) In fact, I read one of the messages : the Duke's... You are disappointed, dear Duke, and I see your point. As far as I am concerned, I'm disappointed by one only thing : I was too shy to introduce myself to the members of the list. I met some of them in Leeds before the gig (I especially remember Nick Dastoor, Julia, Sarah, and... Mike, is it your name? Or was it Mick? Oh god, he seemed so nice, and I've forgotten his name! Shame on me... Will you forgive me? ) The others seemed nice too, but i didnt dare and tell them "hi, I'm Stephane from Paris, you dont know me because I scarcely post on the list, but I do know you and I love you all"... Re: Sinister: the supper club looks rad!
