i was leaning out my window last night having a cigarette (the perils of living at home, being twenty and still pretending you don't smoke) staring at the stars, and listening to stuart hummm out Rhoda. it was quite calming as school hasn't allowed for moments like that lately. a cricket even starting chirping and it felt like a blasted summer night. i got a cd back this weekend that i hadn't listened to in ages. music's great cause it comes with memories. maybe that's why new music is fun, it's waiting for it's appropriate life experience to be attached. kinda like different smells...ahhhh....that's the one that was playing in the cab that night we thought it would be funny to take off our.....erm....well, something like that anyhow... i'm terribly stuffed up today. it's making eating quite difficult, cause i have to stop to breath. looks a bit daft actually, like i'm inhaling too quickly (which i have been known to do) and need to slow down or something. ohhh, someone mentioned meeting a Sebastian a little while ago. my first crush in high school was on my science teacher, Mr. Sebastian. he was an adorable short little guy. he used to come to class and complain about how unsuccessful his dates were. he tended to frequent the Science Center with them, and run around like a little kid showing them all the cool stuff. they (the 'dates') didn't seem to appreciate it as much as me. he also gave out pocket periodic tables on halloween. it was all extremely endearing to a ninth grader. i better bundle up and get to class. i'm all sudoriferous (new word of the week, sounds better than what it actually means), probably means i'm getting the flu. a quick hello to all t.o.ers who made it to the 'meet' on saturday. see you all next week. and to jason, i'm not the one who put in all the time to plan SfC, that's Laura, i don't want to steal any of the rewards for her hard work. byefornow, luv deb xx ps...is it really silly to actually be considering flying over to england just to go to ATP? that would go down in my books as the most expensive weekend venture ever...! always dreaming... ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". well, after last night there can be no further doubt: fireworks are better than sex. and i'm not just saying that because i'm not getting any of the latter. the display at the end of the lewes festivities was amazing, and possibly only heightened by the stoned people behind me going "oooooh, looks like alien ships! jellyfish!" there are some experiences which can't be described, and you will just have to imagine the thrill of standing in a muddy field with 3000 people, all watching the sky become the most beautiful thing ever, all cheering and gasping involuntarily in perfect sync. i imagine watching b&s play live would be a similarly transcendental experience, actually, but sadly i haven't had the chance to find out yet. if i was forced to choose between giving up orgasms and giving up fireworks... well, it would be a tough call at the moment. as for choosing between b&s and orgasms, should we take a poll on this one? anyway, the whole night was fantastic as ever, complete with processions of mongol hordes, zulus, vikings, tudors and pirates. someone pointed out that it looked a bit like a gay pride march, but i would have to disagree. much more gaudy and kitsch. also, as a letter in the local paper revealed, the average lewes resident thinks that someone who prefers their own gender is called a 'homosexualist'. how we laughed. and then we laughed some more at our hapless guests from tame cambridge, who spent the whole evening with their mouths open in disbelief, a dangerous activity considering the numbers of bangers, embers, and suspicious hot dogs flying around. us locals take it all in our stride, even the riot police and the burning tar barrels, but i'm not ashamed to be awestruck by the fireworks. i'm going to see some more tonight, could i be becoming an addict? not much b&s content, although i dare say there was a boy with an arab strap in the parade somewhere. starry-eyed hugs, archel xxx ********* Rachel Playforth archel(a)iname.com +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Hi peeps, Straight to business: HEFNER I like 'em. I think they're charming and witty and poetic in an earthy sort of way. However I cannot listen to them for more than half an hour at a stretch, as then they do start to get on my tits. Good in small doses. MY FAVOURITE B&S MOMENT Well, I have two. One is the bit in 'Dylan in the Movies' where the line goes '...when the music stops', and the music stops, and then it starts again, and this all happens in a very charming and nice way. The other is the first two lines of 'The Boy Done Wrong Again', perhaps the most touching fragment of music I have ever heard. OTHER MUSINGS I saw a chap with a 3..6..9 badge on his bag on the train last night. He was reading through a pile of leaflets on female sexual health. What can this mean? I went to see suede last thursday in dublin with my suede-obsessed girlfriend, and contrary to my expectations it was actually a cracking show. Brett's not as much of a twat as I thought he was, and thankfully that odious fop Codling was absent. However, an hour of my girlfriend glaring lustfully at Richard Oakes was a bit of a trial. Finally, the Make-Up are playing in the Menagerie in Belfast on the night of my 23rd birthday, so I'm all happy!! Back to the shadows..... Sinister: London-area listers (or those willing to travel)...

Hi, all. This is (I think) my first post to the list though I've been lurking for quite a while now. Of course in a standard rude American way I'm going to start off by asking a wretchedly huge favour that (hopefully) won't tick anyone off too much. Anyone who's going to be in or around Notting Hill the first Saturday (the fourth) of December, who is both outfitted for and willing to do a bit of bootlegging**, and wanting to do a fella a nice favour.... TREMBLING BLUE STARS (former members of the Northern Picture Library and the Field Mice for the uninitiated) are playing live. Anyone who, say, wants to go see a nice set and maybe record this for me will not only earn my eternal gratitude but perhaps heaps of money/first borns/<your commodity here>, should it be required. Anyone familiar with them knows that the band never (not ever) plays live. I would come over for the weekend and do it (yep, I'm that stupid) but the wife and I are already probably going to visit her folks in Shropshire either on Thanksgiving or Christmas--both of which, as you know, fall nowhere near the 4th of December. The show is on Saturday, 4th December, at the Notting Hill Arts Club (19 Notting Hill Gate) and the set I'm interested in hearing falls at some point between 4pm and 7pm, though I have no way of knowing when. Apparently there's quite a few people playing and (odds are) the band (Bob's the lead singer's name) may only do a solo show with an acoustic. There's also a chance for Harvey Williams to play as well--bonus gifts if you land both sets. I've got quite a lot of stuff to trade (some that I'm recording on my own now) should any of you be swayed by such things though I haven't much Belle and Sebastian stuff beyond some Tigermilk outtakes and radio shows. Something may catch the eye, however, so just ask. Good evening one and all, I was feeling poetically inspired for a minute. From the fluttering of feathers I thought The Poetry Parrot had come my way. But no. Approaching the strange being I plucked up the courage to stammer "What manner of strange beast are you?" A strangled mewling voice replied "Err....The Couplet Cockerel". On closer inspection it was next door's cat with rubber gloves on its head and a feather duster up its Khyber Pass. Jarkko gave us those bits of interview with Hefner's Darren. I don't agree with his point that those who really love music will drop names of obscure bands into conversation. Some people love The Beatles or Elvis or Frank Sinatra with a fervour bordering on the ecstatically religious. And they're hardly obscure. I think he's fallen into a bit of hipper than thou snobbery there. And I don't love or hate Hefner either. Some of their stuff I think is lovely (like "The Hymn for the Things We Didn't Do" or the last one on "Breaking God's Heart"), but some of it is too mannered and tortured for me. Hope this isn't sounding grumpy but I get really annoyed with all the Indie Cred stuff. It seems so pointless. What's your current favourite B&S moment? Mine is the bit in "Beautiful" where the trumpet solo stops and the strings slide down. Brilliant. Brian Wilsonlike in its genius. Dear all, I don't know about any of these evil Natwest child molesting adverts that Archel talks about, but I can tell you what IS spanking great. It is the Skips advert. Where a band who are NOT AT ALL based on the Steptacular Steptastic Steps are playing on a clay tv set, in a clay room, with clay boys watching them. ClayBoy! Nude, Live, Amateur Clay! Nope! My visit home has sadly failed to endow me with any more yumour. Anyways. The clay band are getting jiggy, and singing a song. The first clay boy says "Here Alfie, this bands really PANTS", then they eat some skips, and Barry White starts singing "fizz fizz melt melt fizz fizz melt melt", and it turns into footie on the TV, and the band DIE. Its pretty darned ace! All you people who like Hefner...up against the wall please. No, its not The Revolution yet, you're not going to be shot or anything... but what the hell do you see in Hefner apart from mediocre tediousness and complete and utter boredeom? Its people in London writing songs about going on tube trains every day - with no magic, no juicy breath-stealing SAUCE, no SAX, and as Iggy (is that after Ignatius?) Pop said - NO FUN! Did he *do* No Fun? It must be No Fun being Iggy Pop. It might have been fun being a Stoodge though. Imagine looking in the mirror each day and being Iggy Pop. You're probably such a rebel that you'd smash the mirror and then gouge the spikes of glass into your flesh, the horrible disgusting signifier of filthy lowdown humanity. Garrr! Fuckin 'ell, is Gregorys Girl a rare film in America? Not seen it myself. I expect it'll happen one of these days. But most kids in the UK see that film at school - when its a rainy break and you can't go outside, so you have to stay in the classroom, and if you're in the English room where theres a telly, you get to watch an old musty video they've kept in the back storeroom since 1963. Pookie, I would send Stuart Murdoch some tomato ketchup. And some bread. And a pack of sausages, and some oil. So he could fry himself up some sausages and make a sausage buttie! Of course, he could gril them and then no need for the oil. But he might use it to rub over his naked body, so it glistens. Ooo. You can buy popstars anything, its not as if they're going to write and complain saying "ooh, I actually would've preferred the latest model in baby blue as opposed to minty mudslide.."... If Stuart Murdoch understands girls so well, why does he write about girl problems so much? How come all his birds start partaking of that special sauce we know only as "gayism"? I think Stuart is a boy, with a triangular face. I don't know! I don't know Stuart! He's a veritable stranger. I fell in loove with a beautiful stranger....and then started wiggling my bum cheeks in his face, in a car. Sorry, thats a Madonna video and not my life. And a big hello to all you truckers. Erm, first of all, I really hate doing this and it's probably not my place to do so but I get the feeling some people need to be reminded to go back and read everything Honey said a couple of weeks ago in his massiiive mail to Sinister, as it seems that there are still a few pointless one or two line mails clogging up the list. I know no-one does it intentionally but it's really not fair on Paul, he has tried to be nice about it and he does work hard enough as it is. Unlike me, who does bugger all. Really sorry about that, probably a bit hypocritical given the quality of my mails. Especially this one as you'll see. Anyway, on to jollier things... Jollier things being the quite hilarious fireworks display on Glasgow Green. A big giant luminous head was the undoubted star of the show, it's mouth opening and closing in time with the bizarre rap which was blaring from the loud speakers: "Time to dance to this rhythm of mine, time to get down with Father Time". Lovely. Scaring waitresses in Pizza restaurants by being hideously drunk is also a fun pastime, if anyone wants to try it. Saturday was The Chemistry Experiment. Umm, the less said about that the better, probably. The drummer was so drunk they almost didn't let him in the building. They shouldn't have. Sorry guys. I was, however, most impressed with My Legendary Girlfriend, even if others were making unfavourable comparisons to Depeche Mode. Sunday was Socialism 2000, where we were encouraged by the Scottish Socialist Party to fight the good fight against EVIL CAPITALISM. However it all becomes a bit of a joke when they end letters with "yours in solidarity", and just gets me thinking of Life of Brian. Not that I gave a tosh about any of that, I just wanted to see Struan make a fool of himself on stage, and he duly obliged, sort of. I thought he was going to have to sit down and take a Prozac at one point, but he soldiered on and things improved when he could sit down and take questions, then wave the microphone on to Francis MacDonald (Shoeshine Records) and Douglas MacIntyre (Creeping Bent), who were slightly more eloquent and confident in their roles. Lots of people stood up saying things like "Morag McHaggis, Pollockshields Scottish Socialist Party" then ranted on for hours about lack of funding for schools, community centres etc, after which Stuart would wave the mic away, Francis would say something apologetic and Douglas would make a witty comment. All of which added up to very little, but at least they tried. And at least I was there because I was interested in what they had to say, not because I fancy the pants off Stuart Murdoch. Yes, I mean you. And you. Hmm, I seem to be in a bit of a funny mood. It's probably the medication I took this morning. Actually, I'm quite happy because I finally got my copy of Neil Young's On The Beach, which I don't think was available on cd before this year. I say finally because the first time I bought it I got home only to find that the silly girl in the record store had forgotten to put the cd in the case. Unfortunately getting the cd meant gong back into said record store and conversing with PASTEL. However, I managed to suffer the nasal whine and get out with my wares. And the album's brilliant, and has extra live tracks which make it extra brilliant. So Al's well that ends well. This post seems to be going on a bit, and so far I've insulted 2 pop stars, moaned a bit and said nothing of any interest to anyone. The thing about gregory's 2 girls is that it came out mid october and then vanished very quickly, it's a shame that, coz it's dead good. Another strange thing is that this weekend i wathched bill forsyth's first film, that sinking feeling, in which most of the characters are played by actors who were also in gregory's girl, only it was made before but all the people look older than in gregory's girl.
